Video Transcript for Yakima PlateMate Bike Rack License Plate Holder Review

John: Hey, guys, John here from and today I want to talk to you about the Yakima PlateMate. This is it right here. It's a very simple design. Just gets our license plate to the back of our accessory in our trailer hitch. So whether we have a bike rack, we have a cargo carrier, anything that's a hitch mounted accessory that we're able to get these straps around, we'll be able to show our license plate at the back and help stay street legal. So we've taken the PlateMate off and with our bikes loaded up, we can't see our license plate at all. So obviously that's a problem while we're driving down the road.

Luckily, with Yakima's solution we're able to put it on our bikes or even just put it directly to the bike rack if need be.Now while we do have better visibility of our license plate without the bikes in the way, this does have a center mass that sits right in the middle of our license plate. So it still would be a good idea and it's still just as easy to install it on our bike rack.So the bike rack that we we're initially using this PlateMate on was a hanging style bike rack. This is a platform style bike rack and so our bikes will sit on top. They'll still cover our license plate, but when we have this up in the folded position like you see, it still covers our license plate quite a bit and so this is another useful application. We're not just limited to hitch mount bike racks either.

If we have a trunk mount bike rack, typically when we have our bikes hanging on them or even some of the lower parts here, they'll cover up our license plate so we can still use this bracket for this application as well. We're not just limited to bike racks either. Here we have our etrailer folding cargo carrier. We're able to put the PlateMate out on the outside because this basket will still hide our license plate some.We could have it in the folded position as well as the towed position here. This is useful in case we have taller items in our cargo basket that are going to hide our license plate. Here's the PlateMate without the license plate installed. We have plenty of different holes for different mounting configurations for license plates.

This is compatible with all U. S. and Canadian license plates so we don't have to worry about compatibility with our license plate. And in these holes all around the edges, these are what we're going to use for our hook and loop fasteners, our hook and loop straps, so we can fasten it to our bike frame or bike rack or even fasten it to maybe a cargo carrier. To install our license plate, we just line up the mounting holes of our license plate with those of the bracket and we use the plastic hardware. We have a plastic screw and then a plastic hand nut here.

We tighten it on the back. It's very simple. We don't need any tools and I really like that the hardware that we receive is plastic because it's not going to rust or corrode over time. If you've ever taken your license plate off of your vehicle, we all know it gets rusty and it's nasty. It can be hard to remove, hard to install. We don't have to mess with that with the PlateMate. So we've got one installed. Just do the same for the other three. Now to install it on our bike. There is no special way to do this. We simply just figure out what is going to work best for our situation. So here we have a kid's bike at the back of our bike rack. I'm just going to start off by placing the first one. And we get three straps and so what I'm going to do is I'm going to use two straps up here and then I'm going to put a third strap here and that's just going to help keep our bracket from going back and forth while we're heading down the road. And again, if your bike frame is different, you don't have to use these specific mounting holes. It's really just a universal design, quick and easy. There's really nothing special to it. It's just a very simple solution. Very practical, though. We've got our straps in place. It's not going anywhere. So we do get everything that we need to mount our license plate to the bracket, as well as our bracket to our bike rack, cargo carrier, whatever our hitch accessory is. If we do misplace this, like I know I would probably misplace one of the screws or one of the straps over time, we do have the replacement parts here at as we've seen, the PlateMate has a universal design that can fit basically any accessory that we're going to use in our hitch, on our hatch. Great way to keep ourselves legal and it's very easy to use. So that's going to do it for a look at the Yakima PlateMate. Thanks for watching.

  • Recommended License Plate Holder That Can Be folded Up or Down
The part you're looking for, the Draw-Tite 8802, is on extended backorder and won't be available for some time. I do have another possible solution, but it's going to take a little more effort. The Yakima PlateMate License Plate Holder for Bike Racks # Y02713 seems to be able to do the same job but in a different fashion. Since this license plate holder can be attached to any surface in any angle using the Velcro straps, you should be able to position your license plate in the up or down...

  • How to Relocate a License Plate and Tail Lights When Using a Yakima FourTimer Bike Rack
I have a solution for you, but there is not a specific license plate and light relocation kit for the Yakima FourTimer Bike Rack. You can use the Yakima PlateMate License Plate Holder for Bike Racks # Y02713 to relocate the license plate and the Curt Auxiliary LED Indicator Lights # C53201 to provide visible lighting. The Curt Auxiliary LED Indicator Lights # C53201 has LEDs in each strip that correspond with brake, turn, and running lights. They can be attached to the FourTimer bike...

  • License Plate Mount For Kuat NV 2.0 Bike Rack
There is indeed a license plate mount you can use with the Kuat NV 2.0 Bike Rack # NV22G. The mount is from Yakima but will work perfectly with the Kuat, and the part is the following: - Yakima PlateMate License Plate Holder for Bike Racks # Y02713 The PlateMate # Y02713 is super simple to use, as it has velcro straps you can attach wherever you like on the NV 2.0 or your bikes to display your license plate.

  • Best Trailer Hitch for Bike Rack on a 2014 Toyota RAV4
The trailer hitch I recommend for a 2014 Toyota RAV4 is the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver part # C13406 which offers a bolt-on install with hidden design that provides the best ground clearance. It has the larger 2" receiver tube opening so you can use pretty much any bike rack without issue. In regards to displaying the license plate, the Yakima PlateMate License Plate Holder for Bike Racks part # Y02713 will be a great option for this.

  • License Plate Mount Recommendation for Hollywood Bike Rack
A simple license plate holder that will get the job done is the Yakima PlateMate # Y02713. This installs on the bike rack or bikes using some hook and loop straps in multiple places so you can get the license plate in the best position. Attached is a review video I made of this holder for you to check out.

  • License Plate Holder & Brake Lights For Bike Rack
Sure thing, we have both a license plate holder and lights you can add to your bike rack, and what you can use is the following: - Yakima PlateMate License Plate Holder for Bike Racks # Y02713 - Curt Auxiliary LED Indicator Lights # C53201 The # C53201 lights use 3M adhesive you can stick on the rack, and they have a 4-way you will plug into your motorhome. If your motorhome instead has a 7-way, you can still use this, you'll just need 4-way to 7-way adapter # PK12716.

  • How to Install License Plate on Thule T2 Pro XTR Bike Rack for 2 Bikes
There isn't a perfect spot on the Thule T2 Pro XTR Bike Rack for 2 Bikes part # TH83JV for the Optronics License Plate Light part # LP55CB. That's because they really aren't designed to be used with one another, it requires retrofitting. That said, from looking at the rack and plate holder, I would simply take some zip ties and secure it to the outermost crossbar. The other option which is probably a bit better, though does not have a light, is the Yakima PlateMate License Plate Holder...

  • Recommended Railed Cargo Carrier for 2005 GMC Envoy XL
I recommend the 24x60 Folding Cargo Carrier, part number # e98874. The large size and folding ability make this carrier a great option. Where are your reverse lights located? If they are on the the corner of the vehicle, they most likely will not be obscured by the carrier. If they are on the liftgate, they probably will be. You would experience this issue with any cargo carrier, especially once it is loaded. We offer a Cargo Carrier Light Kit, part number # e98943-44LED that you...

  • Is There a Tail Light Kit for the Hollywood Racks Sport Rider SE Bike Rack
I do have an option for you but there aren't any tail light kits designed specifically for the Hollywood Racks Sport Rider SE Bike Rack part # HLY84FR. My best recommendation would be to try and use a set of magnetic mounted tow lights like the Flint Hill Goods Magnetic Tow Lights part # FHG96ZR. These would ideally be secured to the base of the rack and would then plug into the trailer connector plug on the vehicle to transfer lighting signals when needed. In regards to the license plate,...

  • How to Determine if Carpod Cargo Carrier Will Block Brake Lights
It won't block them fully, but will partially. You can pretty easily do some measuring to find out though specifically how much though, as the overall length from outside to outside is 48-3/4" long for the Carpod Walled Cargo Carrier w/ Lid # M2205-2201. So you can just measure from the middle of your hitch over 24-3/8" to either side, and that's how much the # M2205-2201. Your 2023 Subaru Crosstrek is a total of 71" wide (without the mirrors) so lights will still be visible, but likely...

  • Light Kit To Illuminate The Yakima License Plate Holder For Bike Racks
In order to illuminate the Yakima PlateMate License Plate Holder for Bike Racks # Y02713 I would look into Optronics LED Trailer License Plate Light w/ Bracket # LPL55CB. This LED light kit uses the common 2 wire design; the black wire connects to positive wire and the white wire connects to ground. You may need to use 10 Gauge Primary Wire - Blue # 10-1-1 (sold per foot) in order to run the necessary wiring from your vehicle to the license plate light. I have attached an installation video...

  • Best Way to Carry 4 Bikes While Flat Towing a 2019 Ford Fusion
Thank you for all of the information! We definitely have hitch mount bike racks that can hold up to 4 bikes and have been approved for a flat-towed vehicle so I recommend going that route as it would be easiest. I do have to say you'll want to make sure you have a Class II hitch like the Curt # C12091 or a hitch with a 2" receiver like the EcoHitch # 306-X7239 as a Class I hitch isn't strong enough to carry 4 bikes. Now that we know your hitch is strong enough I recommend checking out...

  • Best Hitch Bike Platform Rack for 2018 Honda CR-V?
I have a couple of great options for you but unfortunately all of our platform racks will block the license plate and rear view camera when bikes are loaded. The bike rack that I would recommend for your 2018 Honda CR-V are the Kuat Transfer V2 Bike Rack for 2 Bikes # KU74FR. It has a very low profile and will allowing you to see bit more out of your review camera than you would with other bike racks. This bike rack will allow you to tilt it away in order to gain rear hatch access. The...

  • Hitch Cargo Carrier Recommendation that Has License Plate Mount and Light Kit Available
The light kit for the # 63153 carrier is the # 20174 for incandescent lamps or # 98174LED for LED lamps. This would fit the cargo bag part # 988501 that you are interested in as well so it would be your best option that wouldn't require any fabrication. If you need to move your license plate, you could use the # Y02713 which is unlit or the # 328-003-71PE for a lighted option.

  • Bike Rack Recommendations for 88 lb Fat Tire E-Bikes
For your application you need either the Hollywood Racks Sport Rider SE2 # HR1450Z-FB or the RV Rider # HLY64FR. Both options have a weight capacity of 80 lbs per bike (which should match your bikes once you remove the batteries) and a max tire width of 5" so they definitely meet your requirements plus these are the only 2 racks I know of that can hold 80 lb bikes with fat tires. • Do You Carry a Light Platform Bike Rack with A Threaded Hitch Pin that Wont Block the License Plate
I have a solution for you. Every hitch rack will block the license plate to a certain extend with bikes loaded or when folded up. For a solution that does not involve a roof rack, I recommend the Yakima PlateMate License Plate Holder for Bike Racks # Y02713. With the PlateMate, you will be able to attach your license plates to your bikes during transport. Hardware is not included for the Optronics LED Trailer License Plate Light w/ Bracket - 5 Diodes - Clear Lens Item # LPL55CB, but you can make a trip to the local hardware store and pick up some bolts and nuts to secure the license plate, light bracket, and Yakima PlateMate License Plate Holder # Y02713 together. 2 bolts hold everything together and secure the whole setup; the bolt holes measure 5/16" so you will want to get bolts that are no bigger than 5/16" and make sure to get bolts...

  • Cargo Carrier Recommendations for 2004 Honda CR-V
When you choose a cargo carrier for your 2004 CR-V, you will want one that has a shank long enough so that the basket clears the rear-mounted spare tire. When we installed a 2 inch receiver on that generation CR-V, we found that the distance from the hitch pin hole in the receiver to the rear-most portion of the back bumper was 9 inches. You will want to measure that distance on your vehicle to confirm how much clearance is needed. The following are a few carriers I checked and their clearance...

  • Putting a License Plate and Tail Lights on a Bike Rack
For the license plate, you have two options. You can use the Yakima PlateMate License Plate Holder for Bike Racks # Y02713. This uses a hook and loop strap to attach to your bikes or your rack and is quick, easy, and temporary. The downside to this style is that it isn't lighted, so you would either have to avoid driving at night or go with the second option. • Bike Rack For Step-Thru Ebikes For Front Hitch
Hey Kenneth, thanks for the question and it's a good one as you're right, there are some bike racks deemed not suitable for use on a front hitch. So I did some digging, and since there's only a couple options for your 71 lb step-thru ebikes, the best one that you can use for the front hitch is the Thule Epos Bike Rack for 2 Bikes # TH99XE. I spoke to Thule about this and there isn't a specific restriction, they just said they hadn't tested it, so this is an option if you're comfortable...
