The sturdy steel construction is protected with a matte black finish for added durability. Very satisfied. Nice finish. Came undamaged. Perfect fit for my 2011 RAV4. Good instructions. No cutting or alterations required, other than unbolting and removing left rear tow hook, which is to be replaced by left mounting point of receiver. Was able to do alone, with help of a cooler to support opposite side as I secured first bolt. Be sure you have an 8” plus extension for your socket to give room for ratchet and torque wrench. Also, a ratchet strap should be used to support exhaust, which must be slipped off of hanger to gain access to right side bolts.

Hitch still works great. The finish still looks good after one year in Minnesota.

Etrailer has great service and great products. I have bought several receivers from them. This one had some reviews saying it could come bent and the mounting holes would not line up until you bent it back to widen the spread. I thought “no way” that thing is too beefy to show up bent. I was wrong. It showed up bent. I decided that since I will have only about 200 pound max of bikes on there, I slotted the holes on the drivers side and it easily mounted right up. It’s 1/4” plate, so I’m sure there is no structural loss for the load I plan to carry. For the price, it’s a great product.

Thank you for your review! What sounds like is happening is that the hitch may have become flexed in shipping. We have a help article that I linked below for future reference. It talks about a few difference ways to straighten out a flexed or bent hitch.

2016 Toyota RAV4

Unfortunately did not fit my 2016 Toyota Rav4 hybrid. Wasted too much time and ruined my plans for the weekend. Hitch was overall too narrow (by 1/2 inch) for vehicle frame. Perhaps faulty product or slightly bent? Regardless, the bolt holes on both sides didn’t have adequate room, see photos. Will return for refund. I have experience working on USAF aircraft, so it would have been an easy install had the hitch fit properly.

Hi Nathan, Thank you for your feedback! This hitch is a confirmed fit for your vehicle. Trailer hitch receivers can flex during shipping due to the ears of the hitch being made out of mild steel. The mild steel is used to help absorb vibrations from the trailer to the tow vehicle. The ears can be flexed back into shape without compromising the hitch. I have attached a helpful article that goes into detail of how to flex the hitch back into shape.

Timely delivery. Almost lined up perfectly with the factory mounting holes. However, I had to remove about 1/16 in of metal with a power reamer from the right rear bolt hole to allow the bolt to engage the threads properly. The hitch is very robust and it's capacity exceeds the weight and towing limits of my vehicle (2012 Rav 4). Overall I am pleased with the unit and will continue purchasing products from this company

Excellent product. I am a 68 year old woman with no jack and I installed the hitch by myself. So don't be scared, you can do this. Took me a few minutes, blocked it up and then installed with a torque wrench and also installed the bracket for the wiring connector. The wiring was pretty easy also. I did watch videos. They were great.

This is an AWESOME hitch. It fit perfectly & is a pretty easy install. I have 1 recommendation on instalation. On the muffler side where the hitch mounts to the sub frame, use 1 of the bolts that held the tow hook on the driver's side and grind or dremmel a slot in the bolt to clean out the threads on the mounting holes. The slot allows for rust and debris to be cleaned out like a tap without damagingthe threads..pic below.

Purchased many items over the years with great success from etrailer but this particular hitch was not a straight bolt on – It did not fit my 2016 Toyota Rav4. The Hitch bolt holes were narrow by about 1/2 inch. I ended up using a bottle jack to widen the brackets so it would fit. Other people seem to be experiencing he same problem. The fixture used to weld this particular hitch appears to be miss aligned. Also purchased the hitch for $xxx on 8/17 and its now listed for $xxx

It sounds like your hitch was flexed, which is a common occurrence with hitch receivers as they are flexible. Customer Service will refund the difference in pricing if it changes within the return period.

Tailer arrived fairly fast, the item was as described, instructional video was on point (although our 2015 Rav4 had another plastic box that needed to be removed), and we were able to install it without lifting the car or removing the 2nd exhaust hanger. I recommend using a torque wrench after all the bolts are snugly screwed in.

order arrived quickly but missing the bolts to attach the hitch. About a 30 minute job to attach the hitch. Hardest part was working off one of the rubber bushing for the exhaust system. I also used a floor jack to hold the hitch in place while I bolted it on. It hangs a little lower than I thought it would which may lower your departure angle a bit. Quality looks good, welds are clean. Would have had 5 stars if bolts arrived with the hitch.

The trailer hitch seems solid but getting it on is a big hassle. Before you get your trailer hitch, unrest your bolt holes. I used vinegar and a paper towel and a pipe cleaner and wd-40. Make sure a bolt can go completely in. My trailer hitch was bent on arrival and the packaging was damaged so I needed to bend it outwards. I used a hydraulic lift and a tree branch and my wife but this was dangerous. I would use a 2 by 4 and a tree by myself to create leverage which I had to do when I opened it up too much and needed to bring it together more. Be prepared to do some outdoor yoga. Use a measuring tape to try and figure out the exact amount that needs to be bent. But my trailer hitch was so tight it didn't even fit the rav4 so I over-bent it without exact measurements. Just be prepared to bend the trailer hitch because the packaging isn't that great. Maybe if wood gets cheaper they can put a wood piece between the trailer hitch and bolt it there so it won't move. And if they can just double-check and make sure the trailer hitch is properly measured before it leaves. Overall, the hitch seems sturdy and I'm looking forward to using it.

Very well constructed and study. The trailer hitch and the wiring harness came boxed together and packaged very well. Install is better with two people and make sure the threads are clean before you start the install. Love the finished product on our Rav 4.

Ok, so first I have to mention the fluctuating prices - up - down - up and finally down. The hitch arrived in good time and in good shape. After, watching the video and reading the instructions, I went to work. Supported the hitch in place, drivers side bolts went in no problem. My guess is that the bolt threads were covered. Passenger side was a different story. The bolts would not thread easy. I cleaned out the with a tap and lubricant - finally all went together. (This in not your fault - but you might mention in video/instructions)

I’m a handy person and I work on cars, but installation of this hitch was a little harder than I would have liked. Like many reviews have mentioned, the brackets can bend in shipping and as a result you have to bend them back again yourself. I had the same issue and spent about 30-45 minutes bending, test fitting, and bending and test fitting again. Once I got it right though, the bolts slipped right on and the hitch was installed. But after all that bending though, once it was installed and torqued to spec, the receiver wasn’t perfectly aligned (wasn’t parallel with the bumper). I tried loosening the bolts and pulling the hitch to make it straight but it didn’t budge since the bolts were at the end of their oval holes. This won’t be an issue for me though since I’ll only be using it to carry a bike rack. Just kind of annoying knowing it’s like that. Cutting the plastic was very easy, a jigsaw made quick work of that. I also used blue Loctite on the bolts so I never have to worry about them loosening up. I’ll still be checking them from time to time though. Overall it’s a great hitch, but I would really like if they gave it more protection in shipping to prevent the annoying bends in the brackets. Installed on my 2018 RAV4 Non-Hybrid FWD.

The trailer hitch receiver fit perfect. My vehicle is 13 years old so the only challenge I had was cleaning out the threads that the receiver would be bolted to. With a small brush and some wd40 I was able to clean the threads and secure the receiver to the car. I have been pulling my 16’ boat all over now for a year. Thanks etrailer!

2016 Toyota RAV4

This is a good looking aftermarket hitch and the matte finish is a nice touch. If you have the tools and watch the video a couple of times, you can probably install it without any issues. It took me about an hour to put this on my 2016 RAV 4 hybrid, and I’d never done this before. A couple tips: 1) be sure to give those bolt holes a good clean, especially on the muffler side. The hitch is hefty and you don’t want to find out they’re full of rust and gunk when you’re propping it up to install. Make sure the bolt goes in easily before showtime. 2) the video doesn’t show how to reinstall the body panel you remove. The instructions give a little more detail. You have to trim it, which was straightforward, but getting those push pins back in required me resorting to [online video] (oh the shame!). Tip: pull the center pin up, fit the clips through the hole, and then push the whole thing in. Maybe this is obvious but it took me a while to figure out! Anyway, good hitch and a doable project.

Great fit, shipping was quick and arrived in well protected box. Would recommend a good wire brush to clean the threads so the bolts go in with ease. The guide to cutting the plastic was spot on and installed the hitch by myself in 45 mins. Happy with the finish and ease of install.

2015 Toyota RAV4

I'm 5'1" and semi-strong but I was worried about lifting my 60 lb. e-bike onto the rack. Now I have it down pat, 1) tilt the platform, 2) put the front tire in the holder, 3) clamp it snug but not too tight, 4) lift the rear tire into the channel, 5) ratchet the tire tight making sure it doesn't touch the spokes, 5) check the front tire clamp and retighten on the tire if needed, 6) lock the cable. Then I'm off, I love it. The locks are a bit tight & tricky. My driveway is 700 ft of gravel so I'm a bit concerned that dust could make the lower lock difficult. Suggestion anyone?

Comments
Thank you for your review. It is common for the Thule locks to be sticky when they are new. lightly tap the key all the way into place in the lock core the very first time you use it so that it seats fully. You can use a rubber mallet or small hammer to gently coax the key into its fully-ed position. That usually loosens it up. Please let me know if you need more help.

2017 Toyota RAV4

This was a brutal one man operation. Hitch holes do not line up on frame holes-NO EXCUSE. Took 3x's mount, bend hitch, mount/dismount, bend, etc. This is a common occurrence in reviews. Hitch plans were very basic. Suggest that etrailer give a accurate dimension of frame to hitch bolt holes, to bend the hitch BEFORE trying to mount hitch. 'OR' check this at the factory with a simple mounting jig. 5 stars then. Thank you.

Great product. If I didn't have it mounted. The rear end accident on my Rav4 would've totaled my car. That hitch, which still functions saved my car. Even if you don't pull a trailer. I would suggezt mounting one on a Rav4 just for better frame integrity. Thank you E Trailer

- e98864

The trailer Hitch was fairly easy to install. I thought the bolts would go in easy but if you have an older vehicle you will have serious rust on the threads. I had two areas that had bolts already installed, so those two went in easy. The other two I had to use a rust remover and had to use a tap to re-thread the bolt hole. Overall, the hitch is made with heavy duty steel and it looks great.

- e98864
by:

The hitch works well. If you follow the video, you'll be able to install it. If you're able to raise your car up high enough that you can walk underneath it, that would make the install way easier. It's hard to get leverage for lowering the exhaust and torquing the hitch bolts. I've heard good things about etrailer's customer service, but they weren't very helpful for me. Twice my order wasn't going to be ready by the estimated delivery date. But the product itself is solid.

- e98864
by:

Did not fit until I widened the fins enough to match mount holes. I have put other hitches on without difficulty but this I almost had to return. Took several times longer than it should. Mount bolts did not fit on one side either. Not a good experience.

Well made and easy to install. One major exception was that one of the bolt holes did not line up so it took some extra modification to make the fit right. It was cheaper and simpler than returning it and having the issue analyzed That's why the 4 star rating. Other than that problem, the product is good and well made.

Sometimes hitch receivers flex during shipping, so that may account for it being a little off. There are many ways to fix this issue in this help article:

It was great when it was the right size. Took a couple of tries. It did not fit, but in previous comments this had been addressed. It gets bent in shipping (my box was damaged) and becomes too short to fit the bolt holes. One has to bend it out but it is trial and error. It would be nice if it was shipped with a brace between the two sides. If that is not practical at least publish the distance between holes so it could be checked, bent correctly if needed, and then installed without the trial and error. Easy once I had it the right size.

Comments
Hi Robert, Thanks for your feedback! You are correct, the hitch ears can flex during shipping. They can be flexed back into position to line up with the bolt holes without damaging the hitch. I have attached a helpful article that goes into better detail.

The hitch arrived on the delivery date I was given in good condition. After watching the installation video I ran a Tap through the holes, did a test fit and found out they were 1/2" off. I sat it back down and gave each side 1 hit with a sledge hammer and it was right on. Total time to install was approx. 30 minutes
