Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite's Tested Tough program provides testing standards far superior to those outlined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the go-to source for engineering professionals.

Each Draw-Tite trailer hitch receiver undergoes extensive fatigue testing and static testing with the ball mount that is either supplied or recommended for use with that particular hitch, thus ensuring results that are applicable to real life use. Fatigue testing is also conducted on hitches rated for use with weight-distribution systems.

In addition, Draw-Tite performs static testing on a simulated automobile, as opposed to the rigid fixture used for SAE testing, resulting in a more true-to-life scenario.

The Bad: Hitch arrived in damaged box, the way it was retained in the box did not hold up to the shipper's handling. Parts of the hitch had punched through the cardboard box. Possibly related to this, several spots on the hitch were showing bare metal as the powder coating had flaked off already. Included instructions were terrible, I attempted to mount the hitch using them and found it impossible. Walked away convinced they had sent the wrong hitch, was going to return it. The Good: Drawtite has much better instructions, they actually have pictures in them and make a lot more sense than the very brief ones included in the box. etrailer has a great video showing the installation as well. The part I missed was that the plastic trim had to be pulled down so the hitch could be stuffed up above it. I also had to cut away the felt-like covered trim in the same spot as the plastic trim shown in the instructions, a 3" by 3" square. There's two layers of plastic in that area. After that it went right in. The cut trim is not visible unless you are an earthworm.

Comments
I hate to hear that the hitch arrive damaged and I will have our customer service team reach out to you. I recommend touching up the affected areas with a rust resistant paint like Rustoleum. For installation please see the video install that we have on a 2020 Honda CR-V.

2021 Honda CRV Hybrid Touring Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class III - 2" Code: DT79MR I installed this unit on my vehicle. 2021 Honda CRV Hybrid Touring. I followed the instructions but not in the sequence in the instructions. 1. Using a flat head screwdriver, remove (11) rivets & (1) bolt from bottom of plastic tray and keep for reinstallation. 2. Lower exhaust–Using an exhaust hanger removal tool, lower muffler by removing (4) rearmost rubber hanger for two exhaust mufflers and (1) forward rubber hanger. A spray of lubricant or soapy water on rubber hangers makes them slide off metal pins more easily. NOTE: Be sure that exhaust is properly supported before removing rubber hangers. 3. Feed the carriage bolts 1 and spacers 2 through access holes on both side frame rails using the pull wires 9 for horizontal holes, see Figure 1. Leave pull wires attached. 4. Trim lower fascia Using a tape measure, marker or painters tape, and utility knife, measure, mark, and trim the lower fascia. See figure 2. I only cut it to 3" Wide by 1-1/2" High. (Lift gate wiring harness plastic in the way to cut any further) 5. Raise hitch into position, feed the pull wires through bracket slots and lifted it over the exhaust. Raise it up over the metal L brackets above the facia trim piece. Loosely install carriage bolt 5, spacer 6, conical washer 7, hex nut 8 through hook bracket of hitch and vehicle tow hook (See figure 4). Remove pull wires and loosely install conical washers 3, hex nuts 4 to the hitch. (Recheck facia trim piece cutout. Also check if rivet holes lined up correctly).[ Mine didn't but close enough as I didn't want to relocate the sensor wiring harness plastic] 6. Tighten all 7/16-14 x 1.25 GR 5 fasteners to 50 ft-lb (68 N*m) and 1/2-13 x 2.00 GR 5 fastener to 75 ft-lb (102 N*m). 7. Reinstall (11) rivets & (1) bolt from bottom of plastic tray and check if it needs to be cut. (Mine needed a couple of small cuts). 8. Reinstall the muffler hanger to move the muffler back into position. Summation of the project was this product is not really designed for Hands-Free Liftgate option. Also Honda's factory hitch can't be installed on a CRV Hybrid as per parts literature. Glad I was able to accomplish this task on the car as once you make the cut on the facia there is not turning back.

Comments
Thank you for your review. A slight flex can cause the bolt holes not to match up perfectly. Also, this does not fit a hybrid or touring.

I bought this so I could still use the kick hands free opener of back hatch and it works fine as long as I dont kick dead center( which I dont do because I don’t want to kick the hitch). The hitch is sturdy and crossbars not visible. I use it for tandem bike carrying and for cargo holder. If I put on another one in the future I would get a second set of hands to hold it while getting the nuts started on the bolts. I have a 2020 honda crv touring. I was able to pass the bolts to the front holes without having to drill as they show on the video. put them in through the same hole you use for the back ones.

1 year later, the hitch receiver is still in the same excellent condition, no rust or faulty parts, very solid. We use it for a 4-bike hitch (2 of those are fairly hefty adult mt bikes) on camping trips, so it definitely gets tested. Note that we use this on a 2019 CRV Touring, and the tailgate kick sensor still functions if you point your toe in the right spot. No regrets or complaints!

I installed this hitch on a 2021 Honda CRV Touring. The install went as expected and the 2021 install video was helpful. Due to the liftgate sensor laying on the inside of the bumper where the cut is to be made, I cut the bumper area 3" wide by 1 1/2" long. There was no need to cut it longer, the hitch fit just fine. I believe the instructions indicated a 3"x3" cut. The liftgate sensor lays on the inside of the bumper below the hitch once installed. It took a bit of finagling and an extra set of hands to get the hitch moved into place. I did end up completely removing the fascia piece and trimming it a bit to reinstall as per the install video for the 2022. The kick sensor still works on both sides of the hitch without any issues. I will use this mainly for a hitch mount bike rake. The product is well made and was shipped out right away.

Great hitch. No issues. I have a 22 Honda CRV with the foot actuated liftgate. I did not relocate the sensor wire and it still works great; no issues sensing my foot. Be careful though because if you are fiddling around the hitch pin area with bikes on the rack it could attempt to open the tailgate and hit the bikes (lesson learned). Solid rack, well made, very easy installation

Honda

Bought the trailer hitch receiver online but was advised to buy the wiring harness for the 2019 honda crv touring from the dealer, which I did. I picked the trailer hitch receiver because it doesn't block the hands free door opening sensor which is very handy. However, when you use the honda wiring harness with it, it does block the sensor. Other harnesses may avoid this. So that was the only wrinkle. The receiver works well but a crv isn't that big so any trailer is going to tip forward to connect to the ball. Good value, good quality and it didn't cost much to pay someone to install it since instructions and fit were all solid

Installed on 2021 CR-V Hybrid Touring. The good: hidden behind the bumper as advertised, requires trimming of the hard shell cover around the hook, but not around the side arm of the hitch bar. The bad: I was not able to fit the hitch in with the tailgate sensor. The sensor bracket was in the way even after cutting it per the instructions and moving the sensor cable. After trying for a while opted for removing the sensor and bracket altogether. Also, the paint seems to chip easily, already had chips from shipping.

This product is GREAT for the price. I installed it on my ‘17 Honda CRV. It takes two people and some straps or a Jack to hold the exhaust system when you lower it, but it’s straight forward. I jacked up the back of my car for easier access. It comes with all the hardware. Two people are needed because the hitch is heavy and both sides need to be held at the same time, but I’m sure that could also be done with a Jack if you’re doing it alone. The hitch is sturdy and I’ve never had any issues- I use it all the time. It takes a 2” by 2” hitch and has 2 different pin sizes as well. I tow with an extender and it holds it well. I’ve been towing over a year carrying about 1500lb load for hundreds of miles and there have been no issues. I love this product!

2021 Honda CR-V

The hitch fit perfectly with all of the bolt holes. I installed the hitch by myself because this is the 4th one I have installed on different cars through the years. I left the car on the ground so I did not have far to lift the hitch. I put the hitch on a hydraulic jack, rolled it into position and jacked it up an inch at a time as I inched it forward into place. I left the bolt wires on and slid them through the hitch bolt holes and slowly worked the hitch up as I worked the bolts down. I used a 14" piece of 2" x 4" board to support from the ground to the underside of the hitch while I pulled the wire guides off of the bolts holding onto the bolts so they didn't pop back up into the car frame. I then slipped on the washers putting pressure on the washer to hold the bolts in place until I got the nuts started. My biggest nightmare was if a bolt would be bumped back up into the car frame and then trying to get it back out after removing the guide wire. This is the first hitch that I have installed that all is hidden behind the bumper accept the receiver. Looks like a factory installed hitch. Take your time and allow yourself a couple of hours to complete the install. Thanks for a great design Draw-Tite.

by:

If you are attempting to install the hitch on a 2021 CRV EX-L, know that the screw holes on the hitcht bracket (left and right wings) are just big enough to provide proper alignment with the under-carriage of the vehicle - there simply is no leeway to align the hitch brackets w/o a great deal of effort and two installers (one with a crow bar) and one moving the hitch unit left/right and in-out. I highly recommend the mfger open up those holes for easier assy.

My husband put this hitch on my Honda CRV in about an hour and a half and didn’t seem to have any trouble. Now I can put my bike rack for my E bike on my car and go more places. My only complaint is that the box was pretty beat up when it arrived but the hitch itself was still in perfect condition. I am very happy with it!

  • 2 inch Hitch for 2020 Honda CR-V to Carry Bike Rack with Minimal Trimming
We have great hitch options for your 2020 Honda CR-V but all of them do require fascia trimming since the lower fascia of the vehicle wraps around the back of the vehicle to the underside of it. So a hole has to be trimmed for the hitch to fit where it would be needed. It looks like the Draw Tite hitch part # DT79MR has the smallest amount of trimming and has a 2 inch opening like you need so it would be your best option.

Draw-Tite is one of the leading trailer hitch manufacturers and they make hitches for almost every vehicle on the market. • Why Does Draw-Tite DT79MR Not Require Lift Gate Relocation But Curt C13397 Does On 2019 Honda CR-V
The reason the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # C13397 for your 2019 Honda CR-V requires you to use the lift gate sensor relocation bracket and the Draw-Tite # DT79MR does not is due to the crosstube to sitting lower which allows you to move the antenna on the lift gate sensor with the included plastic tubing to retain function of the sensor.
