Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite's Tested Tough program provides testing standards far superior to those outlined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the go-to source for engineering professionals.

Each Draw-Tite trailer hitch receiver undergoes extensive fatigue testing and static testing with the ball mount that is either supplied or recommended for use with that particular hitch, thus ensuring results that are applicable to real life use. Fatigue testing is also conducted on hitches rated for use with weight-distribution systems.

In addition, Draw-Tite performs static testing on a simulated automobile, as opposed to the rigid fixture used for SAE testing, resulting in a more true-to-life scenario.

Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2006 Toyota Camry - Draw-Tite

Today on this 2006 Toyota Camry we're going to install part number 36336 from Draw-Tite. This is what the hitch looks like when it's installed on the Camry. Next we'll give you some measurements to help you out in selecting some accessories, such as a bicycle rack or a cargo carrier. From top of the receiver opening down to the ground is about 11-3/4". From the center of the hitch pinhole to the edge of the bumper will be about 4-1/2". Now we'll go ahead and show you how the hitch is installed. First up is to go ahead and get our car ready to install the hitch.

To do that, on our passenger side we'll have to lower our exhaust here, and to do that we'll go ahead and move these two bolts. Now when the hitch is in place this hanger bracket will stack on top of the hitch. Lower that out of our way for now. Now let's go ahead and get our driver side ready. On the driver side on this particular car we need to go ahead and clean out the threads here. Sometimes you'll have a tie-down hook here that you'll have to remove just like we did with the muffler hanger on the other side.

In this case we don't have to worry about, but we have some threads that we need to clean out. We'll spray it down with some lubricant and go ahead and use a tube brush on it to help clean it out. Now the part number we're using is going to be 814092. Can then get to the point where the tube brush won't be good enough and you have to use a thread tap to go help clean out the threads. We'll take one of the hitch bolts and we'll go ahead and try it in the threads. if you can thread it in by hand, we should be good to go.

If not, you're going to have to continue cleaning until you can. Now that we know that the threads are clean we'll go ahead and show you how the hardware works with the hitch. Here's our bolts that we used. Then we're going to add a conical tooth washer to it. You'll need to make sure that the teeth on the washer always face towards the hitch. For this fastener combination it's going to be the same for all four holes that we're going to use on the hitch.

This is the passenger side. The exhaust will be right here. We'll take a look at the driver side; it will be a little bit different. This is the same combination that's going to be used on these two holes on the hitch on our driver side. Depending on our vehicle there may be this fastener combination on this hole only if there's a weld nut already in the frame. If not, this u-bolt will get installed inside the frame along with a conical tooth washer and a nut. The frame we'll have to be drilled out and the u-bolt will go through. Let's go ahead and take a second look at our car on the driver side. There's a patch covering a hole right here. Let's go ahead and remove that, kind of like a sticker. We can see that we have our threaded hole right there. We'll take a few moments to clean that out as well; won't be so bad because it had something covering it up. Then we can install our hitch. Now when we put our hitch this is going to sit on top of our exhaust hanger. Now we'll use an extension and a 17mm socket. Use that to thread everything together. At this point we're ready to install our hitch. You'll want to get an extra set of hands to help hold it up and install the fasteners. Now with all our hardware loosely installed, then we can go ahead and tighten them down and then torque the bolts down as specified in the instructions. That will finish it for part number 36336 from Draw-Tite, the class two 1-1/4" receiver hitch, on our 2006 Toyota Camry. .

Couldn't be happier with the receiver - Installation couldn't have been easier (get a tap & clean out/chase the holes in the frame). I've pulled an empty car dolly a few times and a 5x8 trailer extensively and actually used it way more than I'd anticipated. Next is a bike rack to plug into it. 586479

Hitch went on great wiring kit had everything needed, and the videos were great, the closed caption works well for me. running the power wire was the real work, had to get dirty some, but the wire was just enough to do the job. I wish that I had ordered the drawbar at the same time, finding one around town was harder than I thought it would be. Shipping would have been free. Mine is a class ii , I needed the 4" rise, and the Solara bumper is fat, I got the 11 3/4 " long drawbar, after I searched for the same thing in town. can't wait to put the setup to use this weekend. 357866

Great product, fast shipping, and the install could not have gone better. I would recommend getting a M10x1.25mm tap and tap handle so you can "chase" the threads prior to installing...especially on the threads that were not covered up by the sticker and exposed to salt and dirt. I would also recommend having a floor jack ready or a helper ready to support the hitch while starting the bolts...it will make the bolts less prone to cross-threading and safer so it won't fall on your head. I added some 242 Loctite and upgraded the bolts to grade 8 but that's just me being a perfectionist. I also saw some rust on a few other parts while installing this so you might want to get some Fluid Film (awesome product) in a spray can and get a film of this on these parts...hope this helps, good luck! 353495

I am by far no mechanic but your video and the design of the Trailer Hitch receiver made it easy for me to mount it on our 2004 Toyota Camry. Thank you very much. Just a suggestion, perhaps you should include a tap which would have made it much quicker to clean out the rusted hole where I needed to mount this. It took me more time to clean them out and would have been better to have the tap. Sincerely, Michael 40832

Received the hitch very fast! Installation was pretty simple even for one person to complete with no jacks/ramps/stands just the car on the ground. Only issue I had was I didn't take off the exhaust hanger first and once the drivers side of the hitch was loosely attached it was tricky to try and maneuver the passenger side of the hitch around the exhaust hanger and pipe. Also, on my car the exhaust hanger has a tab that is folded in towards the hitch bracket and it does not wrap over the edge of the hitch bracket like it did on the towing bracket. In other words the exhaust hanger has a tab that is folded over and prevents it from laying flat against the exhaust bracket. However, when I torqued the bolts down this tab folded out and flat so it did not prevent a problem in the end. The picture is with my Yakima HighLite 3 bike rack attached. One interesting thing I found out about this hitch when I bought my bike rack is that the input is actually very shallow. When my rack is installed, it does not go far enough into the hitch fitting so that I can put the safety pin into the side as a secondary link for the hitch and rack. In other words, if the main wedge that secures the rack in the hitch fails, there is nothing to keep the rack from just sliding or pulling out. This is a concern as all of the other models of Yakima racks attach to the hitch solely by a bolt that goes through the hole in the side of the hitch. So any other rack will not work with this hitch at all unless you drill a secondary hole in the side of the hitch inlet to accommodate the locking bolt. Perhaps on the other models of Yakima racks the hole is closer to the end of the rack that is inserted into the hitch so that the shallow hitch is not an issue? I am not sure of that. At least on the HighLite 3 model the holes in the hitch and rack to not line up. I had to drill a new hole about 1/2" back from the original hole so this pin will fit and secure my rack in case the main lock fails. Maybe this is only an issue with my bike rack and not the hitch being to shallow, but I am merely just trying to be informative. All in all, I am COMPLETELY SATISFIED with this hitch and etrailer.com!!! 17751

I purchased this hitch receiver, along with a Curt bike rack. The instructional video was spot-on, matching my 2005 Toyota Camry XLE. Installation took less than an hour and I didn't have to put the rear end up on jacks to do it. But I used the bike rack for something a bit different... it held a medical transport chair for a 4500 mile trip. Great products, shipping and service. Perfect. Thanks, etrailer! 451235

Still great! The only issue, as someone else pointed out, is Ive experienced some instances of the hitch receiver andor bike rack bottoming out when entering exiting driveways. Ive gotten used to approaching some driveways at an angle to avoid the problem. Id purchase the same products again, without hesitation.

Nice product but steel is a little mild. Mine came a little "sprung" out of alignment and didn't line up with my Lexus's hole pattern. You could see a slight bend right out of the box on the left side plate tailing inward. I was hoping it was supposed to be like that but nope it was way off. I took a block of wood and wacked it a couple of times with a 20lb sledge hammer before installing. I got lucky and nailed it on the first try. Steel is soft(thankfully)! Sad part is I believe it was packed this way as the package was clean and untorn when I received it. So much for quality control. I was worried I would have to go through the hassle of an exchange. 402670

Dom, I am sorry to hear about the issue with the hitch installation. The manufacturers of the hitches design the frame attachment arms with mild steel so that they can flex. They do this to prevent stress fractures from occurring over time due to changes in temperature or impact from potholes, etc. Because they are made to flex, they can sometimes get knocked out of alignment just like you mentioned.

Great trailer hitch. Simple install and wiring. Had one welded nut break but not fault of trailer. The nut was poorly welded by car manufacturer. I probably should have cleaned it's threads out with tap first. 3 bolts on that side. one failed as mentioned but 2 are holding strong. Later on I will add another 573011

. I wouldnt recommend using the hitch until all the hardware is in place.

I was thrilled to be contacted by a company that wants to hear an unbiased to review of a product 1 year out. I bought this hitch for my 2005 toyota camry to haul my bikes around with a bike rack. This trailer hitch was easy to install and it looks just as new 1 year later. Works fantastic. No problems with the hitch itself. My wife did complain that coming out of parking lots sometimes the rear U-shaped part does scrape, but she probably drives too fast out of the lot anyways. It hasn't been a problem for me, personally. I would buy again. 436408

I received a follow up email with a request to write a follow up review now that Ive had the draw time trailer hitch on my 2005 toyota Camry for about 2 years now I think.. Happy to say, Im 100 satisfied with the product. The only downside weve run into: In the beginning we found the U-shaped part of the hitch around the exhaust pipe to hit the ground when exiting parking lots, but overtime, we got used to it being on there and we no longer hit as we drive slower. Its only a problem when exiting parking lots and never any other time.. Im not sure there is anyway around this for a sedan that sits low. The functionality of the item is perfect. Tight as the day I put it on. I would buy from e-trailer again. The fact they contacted me for an unbiased review this far out to determine how I feel about the product says something.

Just installed the hitch tonight. The installation process was very easy and straight forward. Only needed the addition of a floor jack to help hold the unit in place for a bit to aid in starting the bolts by the muffler bracket. Bought this unit because the price was right and because of the Draw Tite name. 669072

Installed on a 2005 Lexus. I chose to have it installed by a mechanic only because of my physical limitations, however, in my younger days this would have been an easy do-it-yourself install. It fits just as expected. I use it with a cargo carrier (300 lb. limit) and it handles the carrier with ease. The mechanic did say that to install it with all the supplied bolts, drilling into the frame would have been necessary. The only reason I did not give 5 stars is that my understanding was no drilling into the frame was necessary and I've used it just twice. I will update this review after several more uses. 665852

Comments

In our fit guide, we do indeed state that drilling could be possibly required.

The hitch is solid and well-built, much heavier and sturdier than it looks in the photos. Be careful during installation; there are three holes in the frame on the exhaust side, so make sure to use the two correct holes (I attempted to use the wrong holes, which didn't work out too well for me, oops). Also, due to the design of the car and the hitch, if you carry heavy loads or have worn-out rear springs, this hitch is going to scrape occasionally over dips or bumps, so drive carefully or install heavy-duty rear springs. 661068

Well made and a good value. I would have given a higher rating, but the one I received had one side perfectly welded at an angle that was less than 90 degrees. i.e. Not caused by shipping damage nor temperature change, after it was made. I had to make 2 separate bends to align the 3 holes in the frame. This increased the installation time and difficulty X 4. 655819

usually i dont waste my time writing up reviews on things but i want to promote etrailer as a business. After now ordering two hitches from them i can honestly say i will never go through another company for trailer hitch hardware. both times that ive used them my hitch came the next day with all the hardware for installation! the hitches were easy to install and they have very descriptive, vehicle specific installation videos. if i could give them a 10 star rating i would. anyone that's asked me about my hitches i've referred to etrailer. i dont care if you can find it for cheaper anywhere else, you will not get the same customer experience as ive had with etrailer. great company, great job guys. 601330

The trailer hitch was shipped immediately (free shipping) and I received it a few days later. I installed it myself in about 30 minutes, without the use of hoist or ramps. It fit perfectly. The wiring harness was also easy to install, and took abut 45 minutes. I will be using the hitch to tow a small utility trailer, total tow weight of less than 1,000 lbs. The price is very reasonable, saving me several hundred dollars over having a shop install one. I am very pleased with the quality, the easy installation, and the price. 596529

This receiver is made really well and is really simple to install. Took about 20 mins., only because I needed to clean out the threads on the drivers side frame rail before installing the bolts. I highly recommend that. I tried 1 bolt before cleaning them and it was difficult to get it started (you don't want to cross thread the holes). Once the crud was gone, the bolts went in with no issue. Would've taken 10 min. otherwise. 549242

Strong as an ox! Works great . . . but just a heads up . . . I put this on a 2001 toyota camry for my bike rack . . . The screw holes on the camry after 17 years were full of rust and it took me a couple hours to put it on . . . not etrailer's fault but just a heads up . . . if you have an older car . . . it may be challenging to put on . 529569

Any vehicle thats seen more than a few winters will have road debris and corrosion built up into the nuts welded into the vehicle frame. In many cases a wire brush like # DW00254
Battery Post and Terminal Cleaner - Wire Brush
$2.95
and some spray lubricant can clean the threads well enough so the bolt can be threaded in. In some cases however, a M10 x 1.25 thread tap like # PTW8618
10 mm x 1.25 Tap and 8.8 mm Drill Bit
$5.38
would be needed.

  • How to Choose the Right Ball Mount to Tow a Trailer Level with a 2003 Toyota Camry
  • To choose a ball mount with the correct rise and drop, you'll first need to take two measurements: your hitch height and trailer coupler height. The difference between them will be your rise or drop. To take the first measurement make sure the vehicle is on level ground and measure from the ground to the top of the receiver opening. On hitch # 36336 for your 2003 Toyota Camry that measurement is approximately 12 inches. To take the second measurement make sure the trailer is on level...

  • Trailer Hitch Recommendation and Towing Capacity for 2003 Toyota Camry
  • I'd recommend confirming this with the owners manual of your 2003 Toyota Camry, but I was able to find a 2,000 lb towing capacity for your vehicle which should be adequate for a motorcycle trailer like you plan on towing. Now we have Class II hitches available for your vehicle like the Draw Tite part # 36336 which are rated higher than that at 3,500 lbs trailer weight, but you have to go with the lowest rated component in your tow setup as the overall capacity as you're only as strong...

  • Recommended Way To Transport a Lawn Mower with a 2001 Toyota Camry
  • We have cargo carriers that work with trailer hitch receivers from Class I to Class IV. However, your options will diminish with the lower your hitch is rated. The highest rated hitch we have for your 2001 Toyota Camry is a Class II like the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch Receiver part # 36336 which has a 1-1/4" receiver tube opening. The best cargo carrier we have for your vehicle and mower is the Rola Cargo Carrier part # 59507. The Rola Cargo Carrier is is rated for use with Class II receivers...

  • Which of the Available Trailer Hitches for a 2002 Toyota Camry are Installed Above the Exhaust
  • You are correct. The larger capacity hitches for the 2002 Toyota Camry do go under the exhaust. The smaller capacity hitch goes above it. With a gross trailer weight of 825 pounds, any of the available hitches will be able to handle your boat and trailer. However, you never know what you might want to tow or carry in the future and the higher capacity hitches will allow for more possibilities, like carrying a bike rack. I recommend the more economical Class II hitch, the Draw-Tite...

  • Which Draw Tite Hitch Fits 2005 Toyota Camry
  • For your 2005 Toyota Camry we only have trailer hitches that have brackets that fit under the exhaust like the part # 36336. The hitch you referenced is for the older generation Camry and would not be what you would want to use.

  • Using MaxxTow # MT70355 Adapter with Draw-Tite Class II Hitch # 36336 on 2003 Toyota Camry
  • Your best bet would be to use a cargo carrier designed for a 1-1/4 inch hitch that has an angled shank to provide the additional ground clearance you're looking for. I'd recommend the Curt # C18110, which is compatible with the Class II hitch you're interested in and features an angled shank that would provide over a 3 inch rise for improved ground clearance. When we installed the Draw-Tite Class II hitch, part # 36336 on a 2006 Camry, we found that the hitch would be recessed under...

  • The bolts provided with the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch, # 36336, are the correct bolts for your 2000 Toyota Camry, see instructions link. You are most likely running into corrosion from road grime and salt since your vehicle has some age. We have help videos, see links, that detail how to go about cleaning the vehicles weld nuts for installing the hitch. You may find that a weld nut will break off when trying to install the hitch, despite your best efforts, if this happens we have a video...

  • Trailer Hitch and Wiring for a 1998 Toyota Camry
  • We do have some trailer hitches for your 1998 Toyota Camry. If you want to use the hitch for accessories like a bike rack or cargo carrier then I recommend Draw-Tite hitch # 36336. If you need to do some light towing the correct ball mount is # 36061. For a 1-7/8 inch ball use # 19256. For a 2 inch ball use # 19258. And for trailer wiring use # 118358. I have linked some videos showing installations of a hitch and wiring for you.

This is a Class II hitch with a 1-1/4 inch receiver. It is rated for 300 pounds tongue weight and 3,500 pounds gross trailer weight but is limited to the capacity of the vehicle. If you plan on doing any towing the recommended ball mount is # 36061. For a 1-7/8 inch ball use # 19257 and for a 2 inch ball use # 19258. And for trailer wiring...

  • Trailer Hitch and Cargo Carrier Recommendations for a 2006 Toyota Camry
  • Whether towing or using a hitch mounted cargo carrier you will always have to go by the lowest rated component in the system. In this case it is your 2006 Toyota Camry. The vehicle has a tongue weight capacity of 200 pounds. Tongue weight capacity is the most amount of weight you can suspend from the hitch receiver. Even if the hitch, # 36336, or carrier are rated higher you are still limited to 200 pounds. To maximize what you can carry I recommend going with the lightest cargo carrier...

We see this happen occasionally and since that rear bracket is a separate piece from the bracket in front of it could have easily bent in or out. What you can do is try bending the hitch back slightly to get the hole to line up. As long as there is no paint flaking or creases in the metal you would be fine.

This is a Class ll hitch and it has a 1-1/4 inch receiver opening. I have attached a link to an installation video for this hitch on a 2005 Camry. • Will A Trailer Hitch Drag on the Ground When Installed on a 1995 Toyota Camry
  • The vehicle itself has more to do with whether or not a hitch will drag the ground on bumps, dips, and driveways. Vehicles that are closer to the ground, such as your 1995 Toyota Camry, have a higher chance of that happening than a pickup truck. What I recommend is Draw-Tite trailer hitch # 24563, instead of # 36336. The difference is that # 24563 has a bracket that goes over the exhaust rather than under it. This design means that no part of the hitch will extend below the exhaust. It...

  • The Draw-Tite Sportframe Trailer Hitch Receiver part # 24563 which is a fit for your 1995 Toyota Camry has a tongue weight capacity of 200 lbs. However, you will want to take a look in your owner's manual for the vehicle's tongue weight capacity as the lower of the two ratings will be your limiting factor. I would also check that the bike rack can support 170 lbs of bikes as this seems like an awful lot. Please note that the maximum number of bikes that can be carried on a Class I hitch...

  • Using 2002 Toyota Camry to Flat Tow 1999 Camry
  • According to my research, the 1999 Camry has a curb weight of around 3000 lbs, which is unfortunately 1000 lbs more than the towing capacity of the 2002 Camry. I can't recommend your exceed the towing capacity of your vehicle, doing so would cause structural or drivetrain damage to your vehicle. Your best bet would be to have a friend or perhaps a drive-away service drive the car to your new location for you. Having an auto transport service ship the vehicle for you would also be...

  • Can Draw-Tite # 24562 be Installed on a 2006 Toyota Camry?
  • While your concerns about clearance are understandable, the Draw-Tite Sportframe # 24563 is not a fit for your 2006 Toyota Camry. The two hitches which fit your Camry are the Draw-Tite # 36336, which you mentioned, and the Curt # C12339. Each of these is going to be installed with a part that goes under the exhaust, which is the part that you are likely worried about scraping your driveway. I went to the warehouse to measure the Curt, and it was two inches from the bottom of the receiver...

  • Cleaning Corroded Weld Nuts on 1997 Toyota Camry
  • Due to the age of your vehicle, there is an excellent chance that there is a significant amount of corrosion and road grime built up in the weld nuts in the frame of your Camry. This build up is what is preventing the bolts from threading into the weld nuts. The best way to clean the threads is to use a spray lubricant and a wire brush like that on the battery post and terminal cleaner, part # DW00254. In some extreme cases, the corrosion is bad enough that a thread tap the same size as...

When we installed the Curt option on a 2005 Toyota Camry we found the distance from the ground to the top of the inside of the receiver opening to measure 11-1/2". When we installed the Draw-Tite option on a 2006 Camry we found that same measurement to be 11-3/4". This difference could very well have to do with differences in the tire inflation or cargo in the rear of the vehicle as well so...

  • Hitch Recommendation for a 2006 Toyota Camry
  • For your 2006 Toyota Camry there are only 1-1/4 inch hitches available like the Draw Tite part # 36336. The 2 inch hitch size is reserved for larger vehicles like trucks and SUVs. Since hitch adapter cut the capacity of the hitch they are used on in half that would not be an ideal solution. Instead I would recommend you go with accessories designed for the 1-1/4 inch hitch. The most popular bike rack we carry that has been confirmed to fit this vehicle is the Thule Roadway 2 part # TH912XTR....

  • The towing capacity for the Draw Tite Hitch part # 36336 that is confirmed to fit your Toyota Camry is a Class II hitch with a 3,500 lb trailer weight capacity. What that means is that the hitch has the capacity to tow a 3,500 lb trailer. The lowest rated component in your towing setup is your overall capacity. To complete your towing...

  • As long as the hitch installed on your 2000 Toyota Camry is a Class II hitch like the part # 36336 you can use the adapter part # MT70355 which will give you a 2 inch hitch 4-1/2 inches higher than the opening of your hitch. For a locking hitch pin for the 2 inch portion of this you would want the part # 7683. You should note that when you use an adapter like this you end up cutting the capacity of the hitch in half.

That amount of weight on a trunk bike rack is asking for a problem. Especially on a long road trip like yours. You'd most likely end up with a dented trunk lid when it was all said and done. Best solution is a hitch bike rack. This will give you a secure way to mount the bike rack and you wouldn't have to worry about any vehicle damage. Plus...
