Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2017 Honda Civic - Curt

Today on our 2017 Honda Civic, we're going to be taking a look at and installing the Curt Custom-Fit class I trailer hitch receiver. The part number is C11463. This is what our hitch is going to look like fully installed. It's going to have that 1-1/4x1-1/4" opening. It's got that nice reinforced collar to give it that clean, finished look. Now, it's going to use a standard 1/2" pin and clip, which is included, so you don't have to buy anything extra. Now, there is a plate on the bottom here, and that's for your safety chain loops. It's a welded plate, and as you can see, there's still plenty of room to get any kind of accessories or safety chains on there.

Now, this hitch has a 200 pound tongue weight capacity, and that's going to be the force pushing down. It also has a 2,000 pound gross trailer weight rating, and that's the amount that it can pull. Now, you do want to double-check your owner's manual to make sure your vehicle can handle that. For any non-trailer loads, such as any accessories you might use, the manufacturer does recommend using a stabilization strap. Now I'm going to give you a quick few measurements that are going to help you when picking out your accessories such as a bike rack or cargo carrier. From the center of the hitch pin hole to the outermost edge of the bumper is 4-1/2".

Now, from the ground to the inside top edge of the receiver tube is 9-1/2". Now that we've gone over some of the features, let me show you how we get it installed. To begin our installation, we're going to have to lower our exhaust down, so I'm going to take a strap, and I'm going to wrap it around and support it. That way, when it does fall down, it doesn't fall all the way to the ground. Now, on each side we're going to have an exhaust hanger right here and one right above our exhaust tip. I'm just going to put some spray lubricant on there to help get them off.

Now I'm just going to take a pry bar and start pushing on it until the rubber comes off. Our next step is going to be removing our heat shield, and you're going to have three bolts, one here, here, and here where we're going to be using a 10 mm socket. Now we're going to do the same thing on the passenger's side as well. Now the instructions say we need to trim our heat shield. We're going to measure from the edge right here over 10-1/2", and from the top here, we're going to measure 9-1/4". Wherever that meets up, we're going to be taking all this out and trimming it.

I'm going to be using a pair of tin snips. This is just a heat shield, so it's not very thick. You can use tin snips, a rotary tool, or whatever you have handy. Just make sure you be careful not to cut your hands. Now this is what the heat shield looks like fully trimmed. We're going to do the same thing to the other side, and we're going to set them aside so we can install them later. All right, now with an extra set of hands, we're going to lift our hitch into position. The forward-most hole towards the front of the vehicle right here, you want to line that up pretty close to where it's going to be, and we're going to mark our hole for the front. The way I'm going to do that is I'm just going to take a little bit of spray paint, line up my hitch, and just put a little bit of paint on the frame. That'll let me know where I need to drill. With the hitch out of the way so you can see better, this is the forward-most hole that we we're talking about, and this is the mark we made on the back. We're going to do the same thing on the other side. Now with both of our holes marked, I'm going to start a small hole and drill into the frame. Now I'm going to do the same thing on the other side. Now that we have our pilot holes drilled, I'm going to come back with a 1/2" drill bit and drill through. Now, we're also going to enlarge the forward-most hole to 1/2" as well. We're going to go and repeat that same process on the other side. Next, we're going to take our fish wire, and we're going to put it in the rearward-most hole. We're going to feed it through, and we're going to have it come out at the furthest, forward-most hole right here. It does take a little bit of patience and just a matter of lining everything up. Feed your wire down. We're going to install our spacer block, and then we're going to take one of our bolts, and we're going to thread it onto there. We're going to push the block into the channel, push the bolt in there, down, just like that. We're going to repeat the same process for this hole as well as the other side. With our hardware in place, we can go and reinstall our heat shields. Now with an extra set of hands, we're going to lift our hitch back into place, and we're going to put the wires through the corresponding holes for the hitch. Once we have it in place, we can pull our pull wire off and we can install the flange nut. Now with our hardware all in place, we're going to go ahead and tighten them down with an 11/16 socket. With all the hardware snugged down, we're going to come back and torque it to the specified amount in the instructions. All right, now with our hardware all torqued down, now we just need to put our exhaust back up. Now with our exhaust hangers back up, we can go ahead and take our strap down and finish up the ones for the muffler. That'll finish up our look and the installation of the Curt class I trailer hitch receiver, part number C11463, on our 2017 Honda Civic.

A Very heavy duty hitch made of steel that is probably 4 times as thick as anything it is bolted to! Although most of the work can be done alone, there are a couple times during install. that another person is needed to hold one side of hitch because it is heavy. I don't have access to a lift, but using my old ramps got it up high enough to work on. I mounted on a Civic 2 dr. Coupe with single exhaust, so was a little different than the video, and a little harder to drill around the muffler I think, but was do-able. A short "step" drill bit really helped in enlarging the holes to 1/2". End result is very sharp and should work very well. P.S. Shipping was very fast as usual with this company...Thanks! 470680

Still very happy with the purchase of the hitch. 2nd purchase Ive made from company, and once again, very pleased with the hitch and this company, Thanks!

Honda coupe 2016. The hitch was a perfect fit and looks good. You do not need to enlarge the hole as indicate. It is impossible to drill holes above muffler with reg drill get a offset drill adapter from [retailer]. 340629

Anyone doing the home install needs a couple tips. You will need a 90° drill. A regular drill with a drill bit will not fit between the muffler and the frame. Borrow one before you start the job. Next, INSTALL the heat shield BEFORE putting the hitch in place. The directions totally missed this step. After trimming the heat shield it gets sandwiched between the gas tank and hitch. I opened the existing hole to 1/2" on both sides, installed the hitch, then drilled out the rear holes. For fishing the bolts: Put the curly end thru the 1/2" hole and fish it to the larger hole in the frame, then add the alum. block and thread the bolt on to the wire. This sounds confusing until your under the car and then it will make sense , I hope. Also, use a water/soapy spray on the rubber exhaust hangers. They'll slide off and on soo much easier. 446625

Had the hitch attached this morning. My previous bike rack wouldn't fit on my new 2017 civic because of the double spoiler. And because of the sun roof a hitch system seemed like the way to go. It seems great. Great customer service too. Prompt friendly, knowledgeable answers to emails. The Swagman G-10 bike rack is solid and was fairly easy to assemble. Make sure you have an adjustable crescent wrench. Loaded on the bikes and took a quick spin around the block and nothing fell off. The only thing keeping this from a 5 star review is the fact the lock cover on the locking bolt has already fallen off. But I don't think this is a big deal. Also it doesn't come with a lock cable. 345818

Install went fairly smoothly with other reviews advice. Used plastic ramps to back the car on. A second person helps a great deal. The fishing wire worked perfectly. WD40 on the rubber and a crowbar worked wonders. The heat shields do go on before the hitch, but the cut suggested does not leave room to access the hole to fish the screws through. They got scrapped. Attached is a pic of the extra tools you will need. 488767

This is a great hitch, easy to assemble and after a year there is no signs of rust. I own Honda Civic Coupe and even though is an Sportty looking vehicle, the hitch is discreetly install. It’s not sticking out or making the car lose its appeal when I’m not using the bike rack. . The best part is the customer support, George is quick to respond to any questions, shipping was a breeze. This is the second hitch I purchased from E-Traile. Both excellent pieces. 551516

Do you have a question about this Trailer Hitch?

  • Bike Rack and Hitch Recommendation for 2018 Honda Civic Hatchback
  • The best option we have for carrying a bike rack on a 2018 Honda Civic Hatchback is a hitch mounted option. Hitches are the most secure, easiest to load, do not affect fuel mileage, don't touch any painted surfaces, easiest to lock bikes and racks to and are not the most expensive route (that's roof rack). Trunk racks aren't quite as secure and they touch the vehicle paint so they aren't my first pick. Plus there are no trunk fits for the hatchback 2018 Civics. So a hitch option like...

  • I have included a close up picture of the area in question on a 2016 Honda Civic for trailer hitch # 24954. The instructions, linked for reference, simply state "Bumper trimming: using a die grinder remove the material shown in Figure 2. Both sides as needed." Figure 2 is the picture I have included and the area is shown with white dotted lines. The alternative is to use Curt hitch # C11463 for a coupe or # C11604 for the sedan. This is a great trunk-mounted rack that is confirmed to fit your 2017 Honda Civic as long as it is a sedan. It includes cushioned anti-sway crades that will prevent bike-to-bike and bike-to-vehicle contact. I have included a video demonstration of this rack on a 2017 Honda Civic for you to check out. The Curt hitch requires a stabilizer strap # 18050 for a bike rack, but the Draw-Tite hitch receiver does not. • Can a Trailer Hitch be Installed on a 2017 Honda Civic Type R

You could use the base and mounting flange of the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver part # C11463 and modify the receiver tube to hang down below the center mounted exhaust tips but this would obviously void the warranty. The only way I can see possible to mount the hitch would be to position the receiver tube under the exhaust tips as I mentioned but you have to consider...
