How to Use Tekonsha Voyager iD

Power output: To get more power output - the maximum amount of power that will be applied to your trailer's brakes - rotate the knob clockwise. To decrease the power output, rotate it counterclockwise.

Manual override: To engage manual override, simply press the knob. This will activate the trailer's brakes and brake lights independent of your tow vehicle, great for stopping sway or controlling your trailer's momentum in an emergency. The Voyager iD will reach the maximum set power in half a second.

How to Install Tekonsha Voyager iD

The Voyager comes in 2 pieces: the main unit and the control knob.

Tekonsha Voyager iD Installed

The control knob can be installed in any convenient spot that's easy for you to see and access. This can be a blank switch panel, an open spot on your center console, or wherever there's space on your dashboard. Before you do any drilling, be sure there's enough clearance behind the dash for the entire knob to install!

Once you've decided where you want to put the control knob, you'll need to find a good place to install the main unit. It needs to be horizontally level and parallel to the direction of travel within 20 degrees. A mounting kit with hardware is included.

Tekonsha Voyager iD Plug In Wiring Harness for Vehicle

This kit comes with a vehicle-specific wiring harness that plugs right into the factory port beneath the dash of your vehicle. That means no hardwiring!

You will also need a circuit breaker kit to complete your installation:

  • 20-Amp circuit breaker (9506P - sold separately) for 1 or 2 axles
  • 30-Amp circuit breaker (38630 - sold separately) for 3 axles

Note: If you don't already have a 7-way plug at the back of your vehicle, take a look at our exclusive 7- and 4-way brake-control installation kit (ETBC7 - sold separately).

What is Proportional Braking?

What is proportional Braking

Proportional braking means that your trailer brakes mimic your tow vehicle's brakes. If you slam on the brakes in your vehicle, your trailer brakes will activate with the same intensity; if you brake lightly, your trailer brakes lightly too. The trailer's braking is in proportion to your vehicle's braking. This saves wear and tear on the tires and the brakes on both your vehicle and trailer.

The Voyager iD uses an internal inertia sensor to sense how your vehicle is braking so it can send the right amount of braking power to your trailer. It measures the inertia of your tow vehicle and activates the trailer's brakes to slow at the same rate. The result is uniform braking across your towing setup. No push-pull action - just smooth, proportional braking every time.

Video Transcript for Tekonsha Brake Controller 3066-P Review

Today we're gonna take a look at the Tekonsha plug-in wiring adaptor for electric brake controllers. This is going to be a custom fit wiring adaptor that goes between your vehicle's brake controller and your vehicle itself. The one end just plugs into the back of that brake controller, and the other is going to plug into a socket on your Mercedes-Benz.This is going to be custom fit for the 2012 through '16 GL class. Also the '16 to '18 GLE class, the '17 to '18 GLS class, and the '12 to '15 M class. Those are all Mercedes-Benz with the factory 7-way already installed. If your vehicle doesn't have the factory 7-way installed, you might have to pick up ETBC7 to route those wires through your vehicle, so you can connect into your brake controller.

But this is going to act as that connection point between the two. The pins are just gonna match up to that socket on your Mercedes-Benz. That should be located on the driver's side, underneath the dash, kind of behind the brake pedal. If you pull back the carpet, you should see a socket that matches up with this one perfectly. This is gonna give us all the necessary functions to make our brake controller work correctly. We'll have our ground wire, brake signal wire, the output to our trailer, and the black wire for our power.

Ground will be white. Red will be brake signal. Blue is the output, and of course black is the 12 volt. This makes it really easy to remove our brake controller if we don't want it in our vehicle all the time, or plug it back in. It's just gonna be that easy connection between the two. This is going to be compatible with proportional brake controllers like the Tekonsha Prodigy, the P2, the P3, like we have here.

This is a Tekonsha P3. It's also gonna work for the Tekonsha Primus IQ and the Tekonsha Voyager. It's also compatible with time delay brake controllers like the Draw-Tite Activator, the Activator 2, and the Activator 3, as well as the Tekonsha PowerTrac. Now you can find all of those brake controllers here at etrailer.com, so definitely pick one up if you don't already have one.To remove our brake controller from the wiring, you're just gonna pull back on this tab on the wiring itself, and sort of wiggle that plug off of there. It has this nice mesh housing to protect the wires, but you definitely want to be sure to keep the wiring out of the way of anything moving, or any pinch points like your steering column, or brake or gas pedal.

So it's always a good idea to pick up some zip ties to keep that up and out of the way. That's gonna do it for our look at the Tekonsha plug-in wiring adaptor for electric brake controllers.

Everything worked as it should! Very happy with the look as well

by:

The install was pretty simple. It took some time to modify the knock out plug to conceal the adjustment knob but after a bit of work it fit nicely and looks like it’s supposed to be there. I missed a photo of the final mont of the control unit but I was able to install the supplied clip for the module just above the airbag. There is a clip that holds the wire for the computer input so I removed it for extra space and secured the wire with a zip tie.

by:

Easy install. I used the cable harness that came with my 22 Silverado. Hardest part was just locating a place on the dash for the knob and access from behind for the 2 inches or so length of the switch assembly. Small and looks good on the dash.

by:

I wanted it to look like it belonged. Took a bit of fabrication but I think it turned out pretty good. 2010 Cadillac Escalade EXT

by:

I chose this Tekonsha Voyager ID for installation in my Audi SQ7 ecause Tekonsha has a great reputation for brake controllers when used with Airstreams. The brakes are easy to dial in and once you get it, the control at both high and low speed is perfect. A Redarc controller I used on a previous tow vehicle struggled to find a good balance. Tekonsha has this nailed. I love that I don’t have to mount a box beneath the dash and that the control is easy to reach, not ever in my way and easy to adjust. Perfect!

by:

came with everything needed to install, liked the sleek one button control.

by:

Easy to install and it works great.

by:

Fit perfectly into our 2020 GLS 580 and into our 2020 VS30 Sprinter 2500, both with a Mercedes factory trailer hitch. Greatly simplifies the installation.

by:

I'm going to skip the reviews for Item #3066-P Tekonsha Plug-In Wiring Adapter for Electric Brake Controllers and for Item #331-TPH-017 Redarc Tow-Pro Wiring Adapter for Tekonsha Brake Controller Harness. They just work to get the signals from A to B.

Installing this in my Merc ML-250 Bluetec was straight forward, but I thought quite a bit about the knob placement. Finally ended up mounting this next to the ashtray, opposite of the cigarette lighter. This location won't work for those with heated/cooled cupholders as this is the location used for that controller. This location works well for mounting as there is clearance below and the knob is low-profile enough that the sliding door can still cover the area. Just need to be careful with wire routing. Route towards the back of the car, then reverse course up to the front, such that the slider can retract into this space. The main body of the unit is mounted under the dashboard above the brake pedal, completely hidden from view and out of the way of feet and knees.

by:

Works great as designed, easy install on 2018 MB 350 with factory tow. Cable was long enough to connect under dash by the brake pedal and snake around under center dash.

by:

Fit perfect in my 2018 MB GLS AMG edition. Simple plug and play with the electronic brake controller. Worked perfect after I hooked it up. Just used some zip ties to keep all wires nice and organized.

by:

I installed the Tekonsha P-3 Trailer Brake Controller in my 2015 Mercedes GL450 in the summer of 2021. The brake controller has worked flawlessly. We pull a new 7,200 lb RV with 600 lb tongue weight. There is plenty of power with this vehicle, but the load does max out our vehicle's rated hitch weight and towing capacity. Installation of the controller was very simple to do and the information provided on etrailer's website was great for knowing what items to purchase. As for Mercedes, that was a different deal as there doesn't seem to be a lot of good, consistent information on where the trailer brake wires were hidden in the vehicle and the actual configuration of the installed wire connector configuration as several different configurations are apparently in existence. Nevertheless, I got lucky and had the simplest configuration where the factory connecting wires were under the dash by the steering wheel, as opposed to somewhere under the rear carpeting. Total install time was about 20 minutes and the unit fired right up. Settings and adjustments are very simple. This was a good purchase in my mind and I'd definitely buy it again.

by:

Exact fit and function for true plug-and-play function. The quality is good and the length is more than long enough to reach from the factory connection behind the GLE350 brake pedal over to where I mounted the electric brake controller. The vehicle connection end even matches the green color to help color-code the connections.
This is the only source for this that I found at the time I purchased it and so long as the brake controller has a standard connection it should work with any brand.

by:

To Dena, my order for Mercedes GSL Class connected perfectly to existing factory tow package pre-existing wiring. Have not tried out controller with RV yet, but are planning to on 3/29/20-camping trip. I was first told by local installer that my ONLY controller option was the Bluetooth set up. I am so glad to have you as my go to FOR rv-trailer needs. Shipment was very timely. Thanks so much, Ray K

by:

etrailer came through again. I think they really do their homework on the products they offer as I have used them many times now. I do still suggest improving their listings (every company) as the whole internet sales thing is lacking everywhere. It should be better than shopping in person. More info and often it would help to show the product in use. imho

by:

Worked just as it said it would. Connects my Mercedes’ towing package wiring directly to my controller. Plug and go!

by:

Wow! What an easy install. Plug this in. Plug in the brake controller. Done. The instructions even told me where to look for the plug on the car side for my model vehicle.

by:

I like this brake controller. It is easy to set up and adjust. Only gripe is I can't get it exactly set so that the trailer doesn't jerk when braking at low speeds.

by:

After reading what I could find online, I was searching for a brake controller for my vehicle. I ran across etrailer and found their prices to be competitive. I emailed with some questions specific to my vehicle and fully expected a several day wait for my answers. Within hours I had received a response from a real person, Madison P. He was extremely knowledgeable and helpful. I purchased the unit and it was delivered 2 days later. Super service!!

by:

Easy to install. Connected right to the OEM plug and to the plug on the brake controller. Works as advertised.

by:

Fit ML 350 harness as OEM product.

by:

Bought Draw-Tite Activator IV for a 2018 Mercedes GLS. Installed with Tekonsha 3066-P harness. The Tekonsha harness plugged into the Mercedes pre-wired harness easily. The Draw-Tite was easy to install and works perfectly.

Then for the wiring and brake controller the Tekonsha Voyager ID part # TK26BR would be a really great option that only puts a small knob on your dash.
