Gain and Load Adjustment

Curt Venturer NEXT

Gain is the maximum amount of power that will be applied to your trailer's brakes. How much braking output you need is determined by the weight of your trailer; a heavier trailer will need more power to bring it to a stop. You want to go as high as you can without the trailer brakes locking up.

Once you have the gain set, you can fine-tune your braking by adjusting the load control. This controls the aggressiveness of your trailer's braking, meaning how quickly the brakes reach the maximum braking level. If your vehicle takes too long to come to a stop, increase the setting. If it stops too abruptly, decrease the setting.

LED Display

The LED display on the Venturer is large and easy to read at a glance. It will show you what setting the brake controller is on as well as give you information for troubleshooting. You can adjust the screen brightness or trigger night mode so it won't glare obnoxiously on your dash.

Installation

Because inertia plays no role in the functioning of this controller, you do not have to mount the unit at any particular angle. Your mounting options are limitless, so long as you can still easily access the controller and the manual override. The included bracket is designed to mount the brake controller flush to the dash so it takes up almost no space at all.

The included custom-fit adapter plugs into the port on your vehicle's built-in brake control wiring harness, which you'll find underneath the dash, to the left of the steering column, taped to another harness near the emergency brake pedal. Once you're plugged into the factory port, just plug the other end of the adapter into the Venturer. No hardwiring needed!

Note: If you don't already have a 7-way plug at the back of your vehicle, take a look at our exclusive 7- and 4-way brake control installation kit (ETBC7 - sold separately).

What is Time-Delayed Braking?

what is time-delayed braking

Time-delayed braking means that when you apply the brakes in your vehicle, the controller activates the trailer brakes at a pre-set intensity and rate. Both the amount of braking power (gain) and rate of application (load) can be adjusted to suit your preference, the road conditions, the type of trailer, and the weight of your load. To determine which levels are best for your application, test your towing setup and choose what feels right.

Video Transcript for The Low-Down on the Curt TriFlex NEXT Trailer Brake Controller w/ Custom Harness

Hi everybody, Andy here with etrailer.com, and today, we're gonna take a look at this Curt Custom Dual Plug In Wiring Adapter for trailer brake controllers. Now, this is a custom fit part that is designed to fit the vehicles that you see there on the screen, the 2021 and newer Hyundai Palisade with or without the factory tow package, the 2022 and newer Hyundai Santa Cruz with and without the factory tow package, and finally, the 2021 and newer Kia Telluride with and without the factory tow package. To confirm that this is going to work for your vehicle, take advantage of our vehicle fit guide on our website here at etrailer.com, input the year, make, and model of your vehicle, and our fit guide will let you know if this adapter will work for your vehicle. Now, with this custom wiring adapter, you can easily install your Curt electric trailer brake controller. Now, to install your Curt electric brake controller, you do need to connect the wiring of the controller to your vehicle. Certain auto manufacturers offer pre-wired options typically known as tow packages where wiring is run for you from your dash to the trailer connector on the back of your vehicle.

When this is done, a port is installed at your dash, so you can easily plug in a brake controller. This adapter plugs into that port on your vehicle's built-in brake control wiring harness underneath your dash to the left of the steering column, and it's taped to another harness near the emergency brake pedal. Now, what's nice about this is there's no hard-wiring that is required to install this adapter. After you plug it into the factory port, you simply plug the other end of this adapter directly to your electric trailer brake controller. So because there are no wires to connect, installation is not permanent, and you can unplug and remove your brake controller at any time to transfer it to another vehicle or just to securely stow it away.

Now, this adapter is compatible with time-delayed and proportional brake controllers from Curt, and your brake controller must have a built-in plug for this adapter to connect. It is important to note that this will not work on controllers with a pigtail wiring harness. This adapter is about 24 inches long, and the 12-gauge wires have this protective covering to deter any damage. And as you can see, instructions and a few cable ties are included to help tighten up any slack or excess of wire, so you're not getting your foot tangled up in the cable itself, so those cable ties will help secure any slack that you might have. Well, that's gonna conclude our brief look today, I do hope that it was helpful for you.

Again, my name is Andy, thank you for joining me..

Very easy to install.

Works as described! Installation was easy and instructions were clear. I needed to install a fuse in stud 1 spot on my 2007 GMC sierra classic, but after that, the brake controller activated my electric over hydraulic brakes on my triple axle boat trailer.
Couldn’t imagine what else would be needed beyond what’s offered here.

  • Green Light On all the Time for Curt Venturer Brake Controller
A single green light with the Curt brake controller part # C74VV means that no trailer is connector and the manual override or brake pedal is pressed. If you are seeing that all the time you most likely have a short between the power wire of the controller (black) and the stoplight wire (red) which makes the controller think the pedal is applied. Use a circuit tester like part # PTW2993 to probe the red wire of the controller. If it's seeing voltage all the time then my theory is correct....

The loss of the trailer, intentional in your case, should result in a solid single red light. Hey John, the issue is that your reverse lockout solenoid is not activating on your trailer using the 7-way to 5-way adapter you have.
