Specs:
The Tekonsha POD is designed to mount in any direction, and it's especially suited for mounting on near-vertical dashes. All the controls are on the front of the module, so you can still access them with the controller tucked away in a convenient place.
Braking output is the maximum amount of power that will be applied to your trailer's brakes. How much braking output you need is determined by the weight of your trailer; a heavier trailer will need more power to bring it to a stop. You want to set the braking output as high as you can without locking up the brakes. Once you've set up the brake controller the first time, you shouldn't need to adjust the settings until the trailer load changes, you switch trailers, or road conditions change. Use the thumbwheel on the side to change the braking output level. The output setting will appear as a number on the digital display, with a higher number indicating higher braking power.
The Tekonsha POD keeps the manual override within easy reach on the front of the module, great for stopping sway or controlling your trailer's momentum in emergencies. Push the slide-bar lever to activate the trailer's brakes and brake lights without you having to apply the brakes on your tow vehicle, perfect for limiting trailer movement while you're cruising.
Because inertia plays no role in the functioning of this controller, you do not have to mount the unit at any particular angle. Your mounting options are limitless, with the controller designed with all of the controls on the front of the module so you can access them even if it's mounted upside down.
The included custom adapter plugs into the built-in connector beneath your vehicle's dashboard. To access this connector, first locate the instrument cluster finish panel in the center of you dash, near the driver's side. Carefully pry the panel out and undo the locking tabs to remove it. Then just plug the adapter into the mating connector in the large gray housing behind the panel. Once you have the wiring connected to your vehicle, just plug the other end into the POD. Because there are no wires to splice, installation is not permanent. You can unplug and remove the brake controller at any time and securely stow it away.
Note: If you don't already have a 7-way plug at the back of your vehicle, take a look at our exclusive 7- and 4-way brake controller installation kit (ETBC7 - sold separately).
The Tekonsha POD comes equipped with time-delayed braking. Every time you apply the brakes in your vehicle, a signal is sent - via the brake switch - to the POD. The controller then sends power out to your trailer brakes to activate them with an intensity set by you, at a rate determined by you. The amount of braking power (output) can be adjusted to suit your preference, the road conditions, the type of trailer, and the weight of your load. To determine which levels are best for your application, test your towing setup and choose what feels right.

Today we have a 2021 Ford Bronco in the shop and we're enabling it to do a little bit more. We're gonna be showing you how to install the Tekonsha PowerTrac Brake Controller. PowerTrac is definitely gonna be the bare bones but not for even the bigger trailers that you may have. This is going to support up to two axles and there's no boot setting. So all we have here is the manual override button. We don't get a number or a digit or anything like that with other ones on our website.
So if you'd like to see a big screen we might as well go with one that has that. So you can actually dial it in 'cause right now I have it all the way low. So it's gonna be for the really light trailers. And then if I crank it all the way up I guess we can use the red indicator to see exactly how powerful it's gonna be. But I kinda like having the digital number reading just right now, but that's pretty much all you have, you have the little wheel and you have that.
So what I suggest doing is hooking up to your trailer, make sure everything works but also just go into like a parking lot or something and kinda set this to where it's right. If you're going with multiple different trailers you're gonna want to figure out the setting for each trailer, but this is gonna be a little bit harder. So if I we're you maybe kinda mark the the wheel or something if you are changing trailers relatively quickly or just grab a brake controller with a screen. This is a time delayed electronic brake controller. There's also a proportionate brake controller.
And the difference between the two with the PowerTrac this one is going to kinda just set the time and the intensity based on where you put the wheel. So I can slam on the brakes, but the trailer's gonna slow down a little bit slower and a little bit less intense if I have it all the way in the low setting. And if I'm gently tapping on the brakes and I have it cranked all the way up, we're gonna lock up the trailer in the back. So the proportionate one is going to match whatever I put onto the brake. If you did want a proportional one, which is more popular I would go with the P3 just because we have a nice little screen.
It's a little customizable so we can put different LEDs on there. And also it's just kind of a little bit easier to really dial in each specific trailer. We do have other options as well which have a little dial and it has a screen. So these are gonna be a little bit better of an upgrade but these are proportionate and the one we're looking at today is a time delayed. There are two different ways we can hook this up. It all depends on what comes with your Bronco. If you have the factory tow package, all you're gonna need which is all included with this kit is the brake controller but also a cable that's gonna convert our factory harness to our brake controller harness. And that's all included with this kit. If you don't have a tow package on your Bronco, we do have a wiring kit for you that you're gonna need to grab separately so you can install all this. First, we wanna find our wiring. So you just go underneath the steering wheel, closer to the center console and just reach up there and it's gonna be stuck to a little bracket. So once you get it down, this is what you are pulling off. And then at first I was like, okay, this doesn't work. This doesn't work. Well, this is a dummy plug. You just push this in and pull that out. Here's the harness that you need for your factory tow package. We can line it up, click it in. On the dummy plug, what you can do is you can kinda pry this back a little bit, slide this out, and then you can put this on the wiring that we just plugged in. 'Cause that'll give it a nice little spot to put it in there to keep the wires out of the way. They do include a bracket with some mounting hardware. We're gonna have some self tappers and then some screws to go into the brake controller. I kinda just want it to be on the right side, kinda below my engine start or stop. So it's not gonna hit my knee, but it's also accessible and within arms reach. So take your self tappers, find the best spot. Make sure there's nothing behind there, that's important. Then we can go ahead and mouth this up. Once we get it nice and tight with the hardware that came with the kit, we can plug it in and it should lights up, cool, cool. We can just tuck it all the way back up in here. A decent amount of wiring. So you can find a spot pretty easily back behind this dash. So we know that we have power running to it but we wanna make sure it's talking to these seven way. So we have this fancy little test box. And when I do the manual override, it's should give us some lights, which it is. So we know that power's going to our trailer. What you wanna do is just hook up your trailer. Maybe just go in a parking lot or something and override it. And if the brakes start to engage, you know that everything's talking correctly and you're good. And that's pretty much it for our look at the Tekonsha PowerTrac Electronic Brake Controller on our 2021 Ford Bronco..
