Combined Lighting System vs Separate Lighting System
A combined lighting system, or 2-wire system, uses the same light bulb to signal both braking and turning. (In other words, the car signals a turn by flashing the brake light.)
A separate lighting system, or 3-wire system, has the brake signal and the turn signal light up independently of each other. Typically, the turn signal is amber.
To keep the separate lighting system on your car functioning properly while you're flat towing, add a wiring converter (118158 - sold separately) and 2 additional diodes.
Do I Need a Brake Light Relay?
If the engine is off and your car's brake lights illuminate when you press the brake pedal, you need to install a brake light relay (RM-88400 - sold separately) with this kit. Without a relay, your car's brake signal will override the turn signal sent by the RV when you are slowing down to make a turn, creating a potentially dangerous situation. Other drivers will see that you're slowing down, but not that you're making a turn. With a brake light relay, you can signal both and travel safely.

I prefer a plug and play kit, but when none is available, this is my go to. No matter what you see on those You Tube install videos, spend the 10 bucks and take the time to wrap it all in protective loom. All it takes is a stray rock to hit a wire and you're going nuts trying to figure it the issue.

Everything needed is there for a clean install minus the user tools from the toolbox, of course. I am matching the lighting plug on the towbar to the same brand as on another dinghy for compatibility with the coil-cord we already have.

The Blue Ox Tow Bar Wiring Kit - 4 Diodes work exactly as advertised. The diodes work to separate the harness from the system, so there is no back feed to the car's electrical system when the brakes, lights, or turn signals are activated in the motorhome. The car's rear lights are activated in sync with the motorhome lights. So much easier to hook up the "toad" to the motorhome using this harness.
Installation when very easy, after I figured out how to access the taillights on the 2019 Chevy Traverse, but now that's another story.
I would highly recommend this harness.

Once installed, everything worked great. However, there were no instructions on connecting to a single plug LED tail light system. All the instructions and videos we could find showed a multi-bulb incandescent tail light. We had to do trial and error literally. If someone has or knows of a link for this, I'd appreciate it.

As always you sent me another great product for my RV it's always so easy with the instructions that are provided with your products and the quality is always top notch I really needed this to wire my TJ Sahara jeep for a tow dingy to drag around behind our motor home I was worried that wiring the brake lights, etc. the same as a trailer would have a detrimental effect on the jeeps wiring its nice to know that just looking it up on your website gave me all the info I needed and a choice of products Thank you

I had 1 wire come loose but that is my fault. I should have left a little more wire for flexibility. It is a good quality product.

Toughest part of installing this system was determining the best and neatest way to route the wires from front of the vehicle to the rear. Works great but does not provide wiring to run the third/middle brake light on the towed vehicle which in my case is a 2010 Chevy HHR. I subsequently opted to install a system which constantly charges the HHR battery from the RV power which allows me to keep the HHR power on so when the Brake-Buddy applies the brakes all the brake lights illuminate. Otherwise a perfectly good system with everything you need for an easy install.

eTrailer was very helpful in choosing the correct hitch for our rv and car. They also provided a special brake application in the car that makes it super easy for toad braking.
I am 72, and I hook up this toad and pull it with confidence. The instructions to hook up the toad was presented with ease. They knew exactly what they were doing, and we didn't rush through the demonstration. I would recommend eTrailer to anyone.

I returned this item in favor of the Curt Bronco flat tow light kit. The Curt kit is far superior to the Blue Ox kit. The Curt kit is totally plug and play no diodes to deal with. I would have bought the Curt kit from you if you sold it. You would be better served with the Curt kit.

Went well except for instructions installing baseplate for my 2017 Silverado. After grille removal was not close to the instructions. I [looked for installation videos for] 2018 model and instructions for grill and bumper removal was right. Nice project and saved a lot on install. etrailer is great at putting together the equipment you need. Love website to research products. Have not pulled truck any where yet. [(Covid)]

Appears to be just what ill need.
Question ? Will the running lights operate at the front and side marker lights?
Also the Battery Charge Harness was not in its own package. The components were all loose. Found this to be odd.

Hi Larry! The Blue Ox Tail Light Wiring Kit # BX8848 will only power the rear running lights. The front and side marker lights will not receive power from the harness, unfortunately. And sorry about the Charge Line not being together better. That is a kit we put together from parts from Roadmaster, but we should have made it a better package. I will let our warehouse team know about that.

I am new to the world of towing a vehicle behind an RV and found a lot of articles/videos on the interweb, not having a clue what to expect except what I've read and watched on the web I reached out to etrailer.com and Courtney B answered all my questions, removed all my doubts of what i was doing and provided everything we needed in the timeframe we needed it at a reasonable price!
