I actually have noticed no improvement in the ride of my 5th wheel. There are still cabinets falling and fireplace glass unhooked. My entire closet even fell on one side. The roads are in such atrocious condition, I just don’t think these sumo springs are enough. I’m planning to bite the bullet and just get independent suspension. The road condition will not improve. It was with a try though. They’re easy to install, particularly when packing the bearings suns the wheels are off and you have unfettered access.

Hey Cynthia. I'm sorry to hear that these didn't help with your 5th wheels handling. I know it can be daunting to look at the independent suspension options we have so if you have any questions at all let me know. I'm here to help answer your questions or get any additional information you may need to make sure you are getting what you want and need for a smoother ride.

I actually think that the Sumo Springs made the ride worse. I reminded them and installed independent suspension. There is great improvement in the ride now

by:

Easy to install. It definitely improves the ride by absorbing road vibrations and bumps. Also adds some left and right stability

Still working great.

by:

Made a huge difference when traveling on I90 to Montana across the Dakotas. Time before we added the sumo springs our 43’ Toy hauler was going to break the truck in two when hitting frost heaves and bad bridge approaches, 100% improvement after we installed.

by:

We have a Grand Design Reflection 5th wheel with the refridgerator on the rear wall, and we kept having issues with the fridge doors coming open during bumpy travel, so we installed the Sumo Springs based on a number of other reviews that indicated it would restrict the trailers bouncing. Total success, we have not had the doors open since the install, and generally feel less bouncing as we travel. The trailer also has less bounce when stationary, an added benefit.

No problems at all, everything I said in first review remains, the refrigerator doors stay closed, despite some very bumpy roads, and we travel about 6 month each year in 5th wheel!

@John We're happy to hear that, thank you for checking back in!

by:

The difference SumoSprings have made while towing our 43-foot, 16,000 lb fifth wheel over the past 900 miles is remarkable. The ride is noticeably smoother, sway from passing vehicles is significantly reduced, and the jarring bounce from bridges and bumps is gone. It's a vastly improved towing experience. Interestingly, similar to a couple of other reports, we did find a few things had moved around or opened during this trip, which hadn't happened before. I'm curious if this is a side effect of the SumoSprings or just the inevitable result of a long haul on I-95.

by:

Easy to install only a couple hours for both axles. A more stable ride and haven’t broke any leaf springs on these great American highways, by the way I installed them on a 38’ 5th wheel rv.

@Larry Awesome! Glad to hear you are still happy with your sumo springs. Come back anytime you need anything!

by:

I interrupted traveling on the road. I’m looking forward to doing it hoping vines, but I’m looking for anything. Have a good day.

by:

I have ordered a couple items from etrailer and always have a good experience. This item was packaged properly and easy to install. The instructions were easy to follow and there was extra hardware in case it was needed. I haven’t towed it with them installed yet, but I feel confident they will work as advertised.

by:

Very easy to install plan taking big trip in a few months can’t wait to see how they handle. Update to follow.

Ok it’s been a year and I have to say this product is definitely worth the investment. After taking it on a month long journey from Oklahoma to California I noticed improved handling especially along winding narrow roads. The trailer tracked well and I noticed less jolting. I also noticed the body roll diminished when in high winds or being passed by bigger trucks. Great product definitely recommend if you do allot of long hauls.

@John This is great stuff John, thanks for sharing. This is exactly what the Sumo Springs are supposed to do, and I am glad to hear you are happy with the results.

by:

I love them, they will help stableize the springs on the RV, I only put one round disk on each spring not sure what weight class that put them in

by:

Installed on 2022 Jayco NorthPoint 310RLTS. Took them on their maiden voyage east on 138, south on 15 and 215 into Santee Lakes, Ca. Appears they have mitigated some of the rebound caused by springs, however don't expect it to eliminate all. There was still at times significant "bouncing" when transitioning bridge gaps or wonderful LA / San Bernardino Freeways.

Having had Timbren springs on my last truck and really enjoying the support, wondering now if I should have gone with them?

Bottom line, they WORK, just less than I would of expected. But then again, my expectations might have been too high.

by:

2020 Cyclone 3 axle toy hauler. Can definitely tell a big difference in how quick the trailer settles down over large bumps like bridge transitions. Things inside seem to travel better.

by:

Only 4 stars since I have only used them on one RV trip so far. I installed these in conjunction with an equalizer upgrade (Morryde SRE 4000) on my 2019 Grand Design Reflection TT. For the one trip I have been on, I liked how these helped cushion the ride of the trailer. I would certainly buy them again.

by:

So far I'm impressed with the SumoSprings. I got them as an upgrade for my Wolf Pack 365Pack16. The stock springs were destroyed after a year and about 15k miles towing. So I installed a stronger spring and these. I'll know how well they work after I tow to FL from IN in a couple weeks.

by:

We purchased these SumoSprings for our 2019 Heartland Fuel 250 knowing that they would not fit our leaf spring top plates, but I knew I could modify the mounting bracket to accommodate our RV. For anyone who has Dexter axles with shocks, you most likely have a 5-1/2” wide leaf spring top plate. If you are handy and have an acetylene torch or map gas you can simply heat and bend the inside bracket, drill a 1/2” hole and through bolt it to an existing hole in the top plate. I actually think this is a more secure install. Overall, it would be nice if there was an exact fit for our Rv, but it was an easy fix. Great product.

by:

etrailer provides quality products you can trust. Sumo springs made a big difference in the ride quality of my fifth wheel going down the road. It helped with chucking and takes some of the roughness out of the roads. Items in the cupboards are still a mess when we get to our destination, but less of a mess. Highly recommend!!

by:

So far so good. Easy install. Used trailer jacks to give me the 1/2-1” of lift required to install these. Definitely feel the difference in stability/lean when going around corners and hitting bumps. Will be putting a few thousand miles on this summer and these will provide some peace of mind knowing the suspension system isn’t taking as bad of a beating. A little pricey for rubber springs especially since I need four, but sometimes peace of mind comes at a price.

by:

Sumo springs work great. I was a little skeptical if they would work since the Dexter 5100 lb axles on my trailer have two ribs going across them, I'm assuming for strength. The sumo spring bracket was just wide enough to sit on top of the rib center point. The bracket could be 1/2" wider, it would help. I tapped the bracket in and torqued it. As you can see it didn't go in all the way but seems to be ok. Took a road trip, highway, gravel and a rough forest road. Checked the torque after the trip and nothing moved. Sumo springs helped with the trailer sway and should take some load off the springs and shackles. I am pleased so far with this product.

by:

My toy hauler when loaded maxes out the 2 8000# axels. These Sumo Springs stop the over travel of the suspension and stops the spring sag that these trailers are noted for. The ride is more under control and there is less effect on the contents.

by:

the Sumo Springs took the sway out of the trailer and stopped the spring shackles from bottoming out on the frame

by:

Easy to install on my 5th wheel. Hard to tell how it works until I take the 5th wheel for a trip.

by:

Installed on tandem-axle fifth wheel. These really help to soften the impact of the suspension bouncing around on rough roads, and will support 900 lbs. per axle at 50% compression. Installation was straight forward, and the line relocation kit that comes with them is perfect! However, they lose a star because 10 lb.ft. on the pinch bolts per the instructions is not enough. I had one fall off the first trip I took with them. Of course you can’t order just one, so I had to order another whole set to replace the lost one. Tightened all 4 to 28 lb.ft. since they are grade 5 bolts. Hopefully no more will fall off now.

by:

Clearly well-built and easy to install. I installed a similar suspension system on my truck which smoothed out the ride, particularly under load, and I have no doubt these helper springs will provide the same results for my RV.

by:

These sumosprings are doing exactly what I had hoped! Much smoother and stable in turns and overall. Great product!

by:

I bought these in conjunction with a used pair of the same for our double axle Grand Design toy hauler. The camper rode lower on the driver side, ever with the new 4K springs. I installed the driver side Sumo’s with an extra spacer that helped level it out. The camper tows smoother and after a year the Sumo’s are still in great condition and doing well. I did retighten the mounting hardware after 1000 miles but otherwise very happy with them. We are full time traveling so about 15k miles on them.

  • Recommended Suspension Upgrade for a 2021 Grand Design Solitude
Hey Frank. The SumoSprings Trailer Helper Springs w/ Line Relocation Bracket item # SS26MV you were looking at are going to take some of the bounce out of your trailer's suspension. They will smooth out your ride as they essentially act like shock absorbers so you won't feel as much of the road. You'll need two sets for a tandem axle trailer. I also saw you were looking at the Roadmaster Comfort Ride Leaf Spring Suspension Kit w/ Shock Absorbers item # RM-2460-2580. This is by far the...

Does your daughter have a long bed? If so, she could switch to a gooseneck setup using the Gen-Y # GY48GR or the Shocker Hitch # SHK69YR. If it is a short bed clearance may be an issue. These won't be the exact same as the ones that came with this kit but they will still work well. In regards to the carriage bolts, you'll need to source this locally from a hardware store.

  • Should I Upgrade to 8K Leaf Springs on My Toy Hauler with Tandem Axle Set-up 7K?
Hello Matt, Thanks for writing in, that’s a great question. I’ve definitely heard the same concerns about the factory leaf springs on these, especially on larger toy haulers like your Wolf Pack. It makes sense to want something that’s going to hold up and not leave you dealing with sag or premature wear. When it comes to your suspension, I don’t recommend going up to 8K springs on 7K axles. That can actually create a much harsher ride and lead to more bouncing, which puts additional...

There are a few different things you can do to help with this. It would also be helpful to know what kind of jiggling you're experiencing. Does it just feel bouncy and rough? Is it side to side motion? If your travel trailer weight is more than 50% of your trucks GVWR then it would be a good idea to use a weight distribution hitch which will level you out and reduce sway. Hey Jeff! For your 2023 Grand Design Reflection 320MKS with 7,000 lb axles, both the SumoSprings and Timbren SES are good options since they work with your existing leaf spring suspension rather than replacing it. My recommendation would be the SumoSprings because their progressive design does a great job of absorbing road shock, reducing bounce and sway, and adding support without making the ride unnecessarily harsh.
