Solution to Prevent 2023 KZ Travel Trailer From Bottoming Out

Updated 12/23/2025 | Published 09/28/2024

Question:

I have a 2023 KZ travel trailer...seems that the manufacturer made a mistake with parts or design end result is trailer bottoms out as there is only About 2 of travel before it..Its a BAE frame as is well made as far as hangers so I not wanting to mess with them...is it possible to buy springs with increased height and not affect ride quality?

Hello Derek; unless the leaf springs you have now are worn out and flat you aren't going to be gaining any real height from other leaf springs. If your leaf springs run under the axle (underslung) you could move them to the top (overslung) using the Dexter Trailer Springs Over-Under Conversion Kit # K71-384-00 (2-3/8" diameter axle) or # K71-385-00 (3" diameter axle). However, I'm guessing they're already sitting on top which is the case for most travel trailers.

Another option is to use the Correct Track Trailer Alignment and Lift Kit # RR23QX. This lift kit basically extends the hangers so you can gain some extra clearance without having to cut off and weld on new ones. This raises the trailer height by 1-1/4" or 2-1/4".

If you would rather avoid lifting the trailer then you can use the SumoSprings Trailer Helper Springs. These sit on the leaf spring stack providing extra support and will keep you from bottoming out like you are now. You will need to measure the clearance between the top of the spring plate and bottom of your trailer frame first to make sure these fit. We have the following based on axle capacity and configuration (overslung or underslung).

-SumoSprings Trailer Helper Springs - 5K to 8K - Overslung # SS26MV (requires 5-5/16" - 6-1/2" clearance)

-SumoSprings Trailer Helper Springs - 3K to 5K - Overslung # TSS-107-40 (requires 5-5/16" - 6-1/2" clearance)

-SumoSprings Trailer Helper Springs - 3K to 5K - Underslung # TSS-106-40 (requires 6" - 8-5/8" clearance)

-SumoSprings Trailer Helper Springs - 5K to 8K - Underslung # SS33HR (requires 7-7/16" - 8-5/8" clearance)

Hey Derek, how did things turn out with your KZ travel trailer after trying the lift or helper spring options? Your update could make it easier for others dealing with the same bottoming-out issue.
