Video Transcript for RockyMounts TomaHawk Roof Bike Rack for Fat Bikes Review

Today we are going to be reviewing the Rocky Mount's Tomahawk bike rack for Fat Bikes, part #RKY1222. The Tomahawk bike rack allows you to carry one Fat Tire bike on the roof of your vehicle with no bike frame contact and no wheel removal. The sliding ratcheting straps secure your front and rear tire to your bike rack and will accommodate for different wheel bases. The 59 1/2 inch tray accommodates different wheel sizes and includes two strap extensions to accommodate Fat Tire bikes up to 5 inches wide. The ratcheting padded hook and metal wheel brace is 00:00:47 secure your bike by the front tire and they both fold down when not in use. The Tomahawk comes with universal mounting hardware which will allow for a flush fit on most of your roof rack cross bars, like your round, square, arrow, and most of your factory cross bars. The weight capacity for your bike rack on 00:01:07 market bars is 45 pounds, and on factory cross bars is 35 pounds.

The bike rack is made out of a light weight corrosion resistant aluminum with a black powder coat finish, so it is going to resist rust and corrosion. It is also stream lined with a low profile design which is going to minimize wind noise. The dimensions of the rack are 59 1/2 inches long by 12 inches wide, by 3 inches tall, and comes with a limited lifetime warranty. Now that we have gone over some features we will show you how to get it installed. We are first going to place our bike rack up here and adjust the brackets so they sit where we need them to. With those in place we will start to tighten down each bracket, we will start with the front and do the same with the back.

Now that we have got it installed we will place our cap on and secure it in place. So now that we have got our bike rack installed we will get it ready to receive our bike. We are first going to undo both of our straps, we can now lift up our wheel brace and our wheel hook. Now we can load up our bike, I am going to get an extra set of hands to help me with this. Now whenever we connect our straps we want to make sure that those straps are between the spokes so we don't damage the spokes there. And that is going to complete our review of the Rocky Mount's Tomahawk roof bike rack for Fat Bikes, part # RKY1222..

One question how do I get the locks for rack?
-- comment by: James - 10/24/2019

You can lock your RockyMounts TomaHawk Bike Rack by fitting the integrated locks with lock cores. Part # RKY0332
Lock Cores for RockyMounts Bike Carriers - Qty 2
will give you two lock cores and keys that are keyed alike so you only need one key to unlock both locks. These locks will secure your bike rack and your bike.

This was just what I needed. First of all this bike rack is not mounted on an auto roof rack. I have a motor home and us a swivel wheel trailer to carry a motorcycle; the platform is 5 ft long and 8 ft wide I needed some way to also carry a Mongoose fat bike, the method of carry had to be stable, so as not to crash in to the motorcycle and secure so as not to be stolen, but easy for me to use the bike any time I wanted to. This bike rack filled the bill just right. It is strong, holds the fat bike perfectly and secure from theft, and I can get the bike off and on with little effort. The lock cores work great and are worth the extra cash. Love this thing and recommend it to anyone. Sorry but I have no way to add pictures. 252743

Pros: functions well, easy to use, holds a fat bike, great value. Cons: I had to loosen the pressure on the arm, it was a bit too hard to move. The rack is noisy in a couple of ways. The "offset" rear mount allows the rack to flex sideways an it rattles against the cross bar, I stuffed some strips from an old tube underneath to quiet it. The handle is somewhat loose on the upright bar, so it allows some rocking when loaded, which causes clunking. Double straps for fat tires is a little fussy, but it works and is simple. This in minor, but the rack sticks out way far in front of the forward crossbar, it almost looks like it's on backwards. 582949

Good sturdy unit. Bought two. Held my 29er and road bike great for a 4-hour haul. Easy to install and put together. Don't even know it's on the roof since it makes no noticeable noise at any speed. (Hint) I bought a collapsible step stool in case I needed help from a shorter person to put the bike up on the roof. So far no help needed since the "v" helps keep the bike in place as the straps are buckled. Installed on a 2018 Kia Sorento. 530186

Fast delivery, easy to install, easy to use with bike also! Money well spent! 372067

- RKY1222

PROS: easy to install, easy to use, keeps bike secure on top of vehicle, good price CONS: does not have a lock, getting your bike on and off the top of your vehicle is NOT easy (not a product issue, but something to consider when choosing a top rack or hitch.. I need to carry as many bikes as possible so I have to use the roof, too! all the light weight racing bikes go on top for sure!) 713454

- RKY1222

Good product, arm was to tight the to move. had the bike to fall onto car! I was able to loss the clamp and now works good! 627919

- RKY1222

Absolutely First Class! Heavy gauge steel and great engineering make this the best rack I have ever owned. Thank You 592303

- RKY1222

Good rack with solid hold for mountain and road bikes. Haven't tried with fat bikes yet. Locking operation is quick. Mounting and dismounting takes more time than I'd like, but for the price the Tomahawk is hard to beat. 559373

- RKY1222

This rack is great. I've traveled about 2,500 miles with the bike loaded up and it has been rock solid. Well designed. I bring a little folding step ladder with me that I use to load/unload the bike. When I'm not using the rack, it lays down nicely and you never even know it's up there. Highly recommended product. 544319

- RKY1222

Exactly what I needed for transporting my Fat Bike, thought I would need to install a hitch mount and buy a new bike carrier but after seeing the product in use vía etrailer’s on line video I was ready to take a chance and glad I did, works great on my Thule roof rack cross bars, allowing for secure transport. An additional plus was the quick delivery and the great customer service - thank you! 470316

- RKY1222

Great design and quality materials. Lightweight and easy to use and store 459902

- RKY1222

Nice carrier, easy to assemble and install, works with fat tire bike without having to purchase extra parts 453993

- RKY1222

Well constructed, super easy to mount, and holds my fatty like she deserves to be. 438265

The rack still works great. I use it several times a week and it is holding up very well. Functioning like new. Very satisfied. I use it for both my fat bike and my 29” full suspension trail bike with 2.35” tires. All I have to do to convert is addremove the strap extensions.

The product is as it was described, but a little tricky to assemble for a novice like myself. It is a sturdy piece of equipment and I'm looking forward to using it this week end ! 315332

  • RockyMounts TomaHawk Roof Bike Rack for Fat Bikes Compatibility with Rhino-Rack Vortex Aero Bars
The RockyMounts TomaHawk Roof Bike Rack for Fat Bikes - Wheel Mount - Clamp On - Aluminum # RKY1222 will absolutely fit the Rhino-Rack Vortex Aero Blade Crossbars like # RRVA118B-2 that are 3-1/8" wide x 1-3/16" tall. We do have an option for you, though installing the RockyMounts TomaHawk Roof Bike Rack for Fat Bikes # RKY1222 in a truck bed is not recommended. Instead, I recommend checking out the Topline Bike Carrier # UG2500-1 because it will carry your fat tire bike with the wheels on, and easily clamps to most truck bed side rails. • Solution for Mounting Roof Bike Rack on Sheet Metal Roof
I wouldn't say what you are trying to do is impossible, but it's not recommended for sure. The mounting studs would be too small to spread the weight of the rack through so it would most likely bend the sheet metal. You'd be better off installing the roof rack part # S80510 first on the sheet metal then installing the part # RKY1222.

  • Maximum Number of Bikes on a 2013 Toyota RAV4 with Roof Racks
This depends largely on the weight of your roof rack and bikes. The total weight of the bikes plus the racks plus the roof rack system is going to determine the actual number of bikes you can carry. According to my research, the 2013 Toyota RAV4 has a rated roof capacity of 101.2lbs. You should always confirm this number before employing the roof rack on your vehicle by checking in your owner's manual.
