Video Transcript for Yakima FullBack 2 Bike Rack Review

Today we're going to be looking at the Yakima FullBack 2 Bike Rack, part number Y02634. The Yakima FullBack 2 carries up to two bikes and secures it with both an integrated cable lock and stabilization straps. This bike rack can carry a wide variety of bikes ranging from road bikes to mountain bikes, to even some kids' bikes and alternate frame bikes. However, in some cases, you may need to use an adapter bar, which is sold separately. The bikes are held into a place at three points. We're going to have two zip strips up at the top here, and one off to the side, which is going to serve as an anti-sway cradle to keep the bike from moving too far back and forth and making bike-to-bike contact. Zip strips are also very easy to install, just push on the tabs on either side and they can come loose or push back into place. While one side has the integrated cable lock on the end of the arm, the other end of the arm has a bottle opener. The cradles themselves are stationary but have this SuperCush material here so when you sit the frame of your bike in there, it's not going to get scratched up.

The zip strips also have this material, so it's protected on both sides. For those close quarter situations such as parking or putting it in your garage, it has these easy turn dials here, you just pull up and the arms fold down to give you a little more clearance in the back. It also has this central hub dial here, so you can fold it down to your specific vehicle. Always refer to your instructions to know the proper settings for each vehicle. How this actually attached to your vehicle, we're going to have four mounting points. We're going to have these two rubber coated hooks up at the top, labeled as such.

Then we're going to have two hooks labeled bottom at the base of our trunk. In certain instances, you'll have to convert these hooks into anchor points for certain vehicles with glass hatches or other requirements. It also has these convenient rubber strips to hold the excess straps once you tighten the cam-buckles down. To help better protect your vehicle for either the trunk or the windshield of your hatch, it has these two rubber pads at the top, and the base is padded as well where it makes contact with the bumper or the base of your trunk. It should be noted that if you're installing this on some hatch vehicles that you may not be able to use your rear windshield wiper once this is installed. For additional security, it does come with this safety strap, which is optional for your vehicles. It will wrap around your actual bike rack and install in between where the hatch or trunk meets the vehicle.

When you're finished using your bike rack, you can fold it into this position for storage or to put it in your vehicle so it's ready for its next use. First we'll take it onto our slalom course. This will show you the side-to-side action such as making turns or evasive maneuvers. Now we're at the alternating speed bumps. This will show you how it looks driving on uneven pavement or potholes. Finally, we're at the solid speed bumps, which simulates going into your driveway or parking lot. Now that we've gone over some of the features of the bike rack, let's go ahead and show you how it installs.

One of the first things you want to do is clean off the area where the bike rack is going to sit, which in this case is going to be the base where our hatch meets the bumper and our windshield. We'll set the bottom of our bike rack at the base here where the hatch meets the bumper, get it centered up, then we'll come up to the top here to the center hub and adjust it for our vehicle. You do so like that. We're able to extend this out. If you come to the inside, you can see the numbers, and that's going to be the dial we'll use for this vehicle. We'll get it centered up, then we can start attaching our hooks. Take our hook marked top, put it up in between our hatch and our vehicle. I'm going to make that I position it so that it's not blocking off any of the lights in our rear here. Then come to our strap here, push down the tab, and tighten it up. We'll repeat this for the other top strap. Now we'll move on to the bottom hooks. You can open up the hatch or your trunk to put these in, but for this vehicle I can kind of maneuver it down there into position, and again, we'll take our straps and tighten them into place. We'll repeat this for the other one as well. Take our excess here, just fold it up, and then it has these rubber straps here, and you can push that through to hold that in place. With the bike rack fully installed and secured, next we'll fold out our arms so we can start loading up some bikes. We'll come to the lighter gray dials here, push those up just like we did with the center hub, and that'll lift our arms out. Move on to our zip strips. If you push the tabs in on either side, that'll release them and we'll go ahead and remove all of them as we're going to be installing two bikes on this. A little trick you might want to do here is fold up the anti-sway cradle all the way. That'll make loading a little bit easier for you. I'll load up our first bike. Now we can reinstall our zip strips. Before we install our other bike, I'll install our wheel strap here, it's the buckle strap and it helps keep the front tire in place and from making contact with your vehicle while you drive. Next we'll install our second bike, making sure it's one contact with the pedals to each one. Then we'll install our zip strips. Next we'll take our stabilization strap, wrapping it around the frames of our bikes as well as behind our actual bike rack, back through bike, and back towards the front. Then, just cinch it up, keep the bikes together, we'll tie off that excess as well. Finally, we'll install our integrated cable lock. Wrap it around our front bike, attach it to our locking points, and now we're ready to hit the road. Now that we've shown you how to install it with just the hooks, let's go ahead and show you how to install it with the anchor points as well. We have a vehicle here that does require that, and the first thing we'll do is remove the top strap completely from the cam-buckle. Next you'll see it has this slot at the top of the hook that we'll slide that through like so, and pull it tight. Next, we'll open up the hatch of our vehicle. We'll install these from the inside out, making sure we avoid pinch points such as the hinges. We'll get it started, set those aside. Now we'll get our other strap and do the same. Now we can close our hatch and pull those anchor points tight. Then we'll set them down like so to receive our bike rack. If you're installing this for the bottom part of the trunk as well for the anchor points, it would work the exact same way except you would set them in between here to make sure it doesn't come within the contact of the hatch or the latch point. Next we can install the rest of our bike rack, following all of the instructions and pic guide specifications. Bring your cam-buckle up, and reinstall our straps. Again we'll tie off our excess, then we'll install our bike and we're ready to go. There you have it for the Yakima FullBack 2 Bike Rack, part number Y02634.

Everything shipped on time. Easy to open and instructions were easy to follow — it is essential to follow each step! It was a bit heavier than I expected but I had no problems installing it on my own (5’5”, 130lb, healthy). The 2 bikes fit perfectly. I bought a safety strap not realizing that it does come with one. Installed on my 2016 RAV4 LE. Haven’t taken it on the road yet, but I feel confident with the fit and security of the bikes. 646547

Wish somewhere it had said, that if you have girls bicycles, you need bars for them. Everything else was great! 617373

Comments

We do note this on the products web page. This dual-arm rack reduces the need for a bike frame adapter bar sold separately to mount a childrens, womens, or alternative frame bicycle. However, to mount certain bikes or to keep your bike level on the rack, a bike adapter bar may be required. Most step-through bikes, dual-suspension bikes, and small childrens bikes will require a bike adapter bar.

It's not my intent to write a negative review-- rather, simply to say that this bikerack doesn't fit my 2017 RAV4 Here is why: the straps would have to go *over* the spoiler on top of the hatchback door. This is specifically not recommended in the directions for installing the product. Also, for most new bicycles you would need a "bike-bar" accessory to hang each bike in a level position. Once again, mounting a bike in a 'not-level' position is specifically not recommended. I hope to send this one back.... and get a platform rack that attaches to a trailer hitch. 566638

I’m very pleased with my new bike rack because it is strong and sturdy, the bikes are far enough away from the car so my car doesn’t get scratched, it has plastic locks which which secure each bike down (3 for each bike), it has a large strap which secures to the bike rack to keep bikes secure and not moving around, and there is an optional strap you can use which attaches the bike rack to the car. 543195

Works wonderful! My only complaint is there is no system to contain the straps when not in use! Otherwise works great! 456265

2018 Kia Stinger

Bought the Yakima rack for my new 2018 Stinger. I very carefully and correctly attached this rack to my car and transported my bike on a 5 hour trip. The rack (not the bike) seriously blemished the paint on the lower portion of the trunk including chipping the paint. My advice to Stinger owners is to avoid this rack. 634184

Comments

Any time a piece of equipment is mounted to a vehicle and is in direct contact with the painted surface, the possibility exists that the paint could be damaged. There are a few primary reasons why this can happen. 1 Grit or dirt can get caught in between the painted surface and the portion of the rack that touches the vehicle. Be sure that the padded surface of the rack and the portion it touches are completely free of dirt and grit. A good coat of quality car wax in the area can offer additional protection. 2 The rack was installed incorrectly. This doesnt sound like the case here, but its recommended that the instructions be read over several times and followed to the letter. The instructions are written in such a way that the weight of the bikes and the rack are distributed in such a way that is least likely to damage the vehicle. 3 The weight capacity of the rack is exceeded. The rack can carry a total of 70 lbs, with neither bike weighing more than 35 lbs. 4 We recommend removing the rack when its not in use. The safest way to go is to install a hitch and use a hitch mounted bike rack. That way, nothing will be in direct contact with a painted surface.

After buying a 2017 Toyota RAV 4 I was faced with the dilemma of a new bike rack that fit my car without destroying the spoiler on the back hatch. etrailer made it easy to find the correct rack for my car. This rack works perfectly for this car without doing damage to the spoiler. It is heavy duty and I have had so many comments about what a great bike rack it is from people who knew of my concerns about finding a rack for this car. 435926

Comments

Unfortunately not so good. The bike rack did not damage the spoiler but it did scratch, dent and crack the paint on the back of my car. I would not recommend this bike rack at all.

In Yakima's installation instructions, it is noted that many vehicle trunks and liftgates to have large sections of minimally supported metal that may dent under the weight of the bike rack alone, not to mention the addition of bikes. That is why they include vehicle specific fit information, and for your 2017 Toyota RAV4 the fit instructions indicate that the Fullback should have the hub setting should be at position 4, and the upper strap hooks attach at the edge of trunk and hatch door. The lower support frame should rest on the lower portion of the license plate area.

Excellent fit (Volvo XC60) and solid construction. And after the learning curve, easy and relatively quick to install. Clearly a lot of thought went into the design of this bike rack. The additional bar (bike frame adapter) for a women’s bike is a must but easy and hassle free. 542404

Nicer than I expected since I have always had hick mounted racks. Very heavy duty, strong parts, easy to install. No motion at all when bike is on rack. I like all the features and design. This bike rack is awesome. It's universal and fits most cars. I've used it on a Hyundai Sonata, Mercedes C300 & Audi Q3. The only issue I would say would be that sometimes it can be a little cumbersome to put on. I'm not the biggest guy in the world and putting this on my Audi can be a little tougher. It's still an awesome rack though. I also have the adjustable bike rack bar which makes it simple to put on and off the rack. 683807

Since this rack is delivered completely assembled it was easy to install on my 2018 Rav4. I attached the trunk security strap to the bottom of the rack, changed the bottom hook to the anchor position, and closed the trunk, then re-attached the strap to the rack. Received as ordered and on schedule. Test mounted on 2015 RAV4 following clear instructions. Note an interface with Yakima web site required to get specific configuration for a vehicle. Mount passed the "yank it test" for the initial fit up. Road test not yet completed - fifth star will depend on that outcome. Note that the mount on the hatch door of the RAV4 will prevent access to the rear cargo compartment without prior removal of the bike rack. 608837

Review from a similar Yakima FullBack in Trunk Bike Racks

Review of the Yakima Fullback 3 bike rack. Wanted a trunk mounted, non-hitch rack for a 2016 Hyundai Tucson. Internet search led to the etrailer.com website. The website showed trunk mounted, non hitch options for a 2016 Tucson. Although at most 2 bikes would be carried at any one time in my situation, I am 6’ 5” and have an extra bike frame and larger diameter wheels. Selected the Fullback versus the Halfback thinking it might be a bit stronger (90 pound versus 60 pound capacity) even though my bike is light. Also the Fullback includes security locks. The videos showing installation, removal, on road stability and user tips are excellent, thorough and informative. Watched them a few times before ordering. Shipment arrived quickly. Actual installation experience did not have suprises. Two configuration steps ...determining appropriate hub setting for a particular vehicle (“5” for a 2016 Tucson) was easily found on the website and the possible requirement to convert the lower attachments to anchor configuration (needed for some vehicles such as the Tucson) was indicated on the website and the how to steps were shown on the video. Good idea to watch the video a few times to become familiar with the process before opening the box. The included paper instructions were clear and understandable. The pass through security cable does not thread though the top of the Tucson top hinge area. Rather, let it be captured on a side of the tailgate as it closes. Purchased a few Velcro straps to hold excess length straps rather than using the provided rubber bands. Minor issues. The unit is solid, well built and holds a bike steady on the highway. Recommended product. 657759

Review from a similar Yakima FullBack in Trunk Bike Racks

We initially purchased this rack to transport 3 adult road bikes ~1,100 miles on the back of a 2018 Volvo XC60 T8. Pros: This is much more substantial/solid than an older Yakima rack I own. It securely held the 3 bikes in place with minimal bounce or sway. The installation instructions are clear and you go online to get the specific rack settings for your vehicle. Cons: - The distance between the bike cradles is a relatively narrow 3". - The rack itself is heavy (30 lbs shipping weight) making the install a 2-person job. - For my vehicle, you install the rack using what they call "anchor mode". Instead of attaching hooks to the outside of the car and tightening straps to secure, the hooks go inside the car, you thread the straps through the top and bottom of the tailgate, and then close the tailgate. The hooks aren't "hooked" onto anything but rather are "trapped" inside. You then reconnect straps to the rack and tighten the straps while you support the rack in place. While this is secure, holding the heavy rack in place while reconnecting straps requires 2 people. Further, once attached, you CANNOT OPEN THE TAILGATE until you are ready to take the bikes AND the rack off. So if you want to put the rack on and leave it on without opening/closing the tailgate, this will work fine (we left the rack on the entire trip and got stuff out of the rear area by dropping the second row seats). But give this some consideration if (a) you're single and don't have easy access to an assistant; (b) your car requires anchor mode (you can check online first); and (c) you want easy access to the trunk/tailgate. 660302

2017 Honda civic Sedan Touring trunk lid damaged by this rack. I follow the instruction and I don't think I overloaded the bike rack as I only had one adult mountain bike (GT Agressor) and 18-inch kid bike with Yakima tube top adaptor with it. I am very unsatisfied with this purchase. Will not buy this type of rack again 674812

Very good quality. No broken parts. The "how to video" video on youtube was essential. Requires two people to install without risk of hurting the car. 492096

This is the only rack that would fit on my ford edge. I leave the anchor straps and all year around even though I bike three seasons. The rack is solid and very easy to load bikes onto. 428923

On-line fit-up instructions specific to my vehicle, a RAV4, did the trick for me. Installed easily out of the box with no tools required. Very sturdy carrier, and we look forward to taking our bikes along with us on the next trip to the beach. 334451

Review from a similar Yakima FullBack in Trunk Bike Racks

After searching for a bike rack for my 2015 Hyundai Sonata, I settled on the Yakima Fullback 3. I initially wanted a roof rack so I could carry my bikes and kayaks, but my options with the panoramic sunroof were limited and expensive. Part of the Sonata trunk lid is plastic so I was very hesitant to use a trunk mounted rack. It seemed that most Sonata owners were using a trunk mount rack, so I placed my order on a Sunday evening. etrailer shipped it the next day and I received the rack on Thursday. It took about 10 minutes to unpack, read the instructions and install it. I put both my mtb and road bike on and went for a test ride. The rack was more stable than the hitch mounted rack I had on my old vehicle, and the best part was it didn't scratch my paint. It keeps the bike pedals far away from my bumper, and it was one of only a few racks that would clear my factory spoiler. It folds up and I can stick it in my trunk while I ride. The only reason for the 4 stars is that the rack is fairly heavy. It would be nice if Yakima could find a way to lighten it up while keeping the rigidity and price where it is now. Otherwise, I'm completely satisfied with the rack and the service from etrailer. 547056

Comments

You mentioned a concern about scratching-Its very important that you keep the portion of the rack and the surfaces of the vehicle that touch extremely clean. Any dirt or grit that gets caught in between the rack and vehicle can scratch the paint. A few good coats of quality car wax applied to the trunk lid and top of the bumper cover can provide additional protection as well.

Review from a similar Yakima FullBack in Trunk Bike Racks

This rack was one of the very few that I could find that was verified to fit my 2017 Hyundai Tucson. Great service from etrailer, ordered on a Tuesday morning, got an email later that evening saying that it had shipped, and received it on Thursday! Very sturdy and solid and holds bikes steady. Easy to set up. I like their ratcheting clamp system for holding the bikes to the rack. Much quicker than tightening a bunch of straps. Purchased the optional glass anchors to use on the bottom as the Yakima fit guide said the bottom hooks had to be used in the anchor mode and I didn't like the way they looked against the interior plastic panels of the hatch. Two negatives, the reason for only 4 stars; the cable to lock the bikes to the rack will only reach the third bike. This was not very clear in the product description. If you carry less than that, it won't reach the bike in the middle position. Yakima offers an optional longer cable and they should include it to begin with, some people won't always carry three bikes all the time. I positioned the rack as indicated by the fit guide and the rack blocks the top center stop light, but the other lights can be seen OK through the spokes of the bikes. This rack was a little more expensive than some I looked at, but you get what you pay for, and I think this rack will serve my needs well. 542119
