Should the Rhino-Rack Euro Bar Crossbars Flex Up and Down With Attachments

Updated 10/08/2019 | Published 10/06/2019

Question:

I have an 2017 Honda Civic LX with a bare roof. Currently I have a euro rhino rack set up up with a rockymounts tomahawk bike carrier. I ride a size Medium SALSA TIMBERJACK, factory specs weight it in at about 28lbs. The bike mount is located on the drivers side, about 7inch from the feet of the rack. Ive recently noticed an excess amount of flex when I drive to and from trailheads. After further inspection Ive noticed that the center of the front cross bar bows in the middle when I grab the wheel of the bike and jerk it side to side. Is this normal flex of the steel or is the bike too heavy for the rack?

The RockyMounts TomaHawk Roof Bike Rack part # RKY1222 is rated for bikes up to 45 lbs and the Rhino-Rack Euro Bar Crossbars part # RREB126B has a weight capacity of 165 lbs so I do not believe overloading is an issue. There should be a small amount of flex but not to the point where the bike/bike rack is bouncing up and down. It sounds like the crossbars may have weakened so it would be wise to replace these after looking them over. The above Rhino-Rack Euro Bar Crossbars part # RREB126B are the correct length you need but they are not sold individually so you will need to replace both.
