Quick summary of Yakima On Ramp bike rack: Great service from etrailer.com, but in spite of Yakima’s claim that the rack is designed for bikes with up to 3.25 inch tires, when attached at a 45 degree angle as specified by Yakima, the tie down straps do not fit either of my bikes (27.5x2.4 and 27.5x2.8 inch tires).

Comments
For tires sized 3.25 to 4.5 the OnRamp FatStraps Item # Y23FR
Fat Tire Straps for Yakima OnRamp Bike Rack - Qty 2
$10.21
will need to be purchased.

works for my setup. I have 2 lectric bikes and it carried them no problem. My minor issue is my Outdoors RV Trailer is high off the ground and the "ramp" is much too short to be helpful.

- Y36FR
by:

This is a great bike rack. We use it to carry two e-bikes and have had no issues. One bike has fenders and the other is a step through - the adjustable clamps and wheel cradles make it easy to secure the bikes. One has balloon tires, and just fits inside the wheel cradle, so I’m not sure how a fat tire bike would work. The ramp is awesome, can be placed on either side, is long enough to be helpful, and short enough to stow. When the rack is folded up, it fits snug to our vehicle.

Seems to be all it was advertised, works well for our 2 stepthru frame ebikes on motorhome and tow vehicle. Nice high clearance, loading ramp works better than I expected, reccomend for people looking to use with RV especially

Great Rack - Very Happy! We just purchased 2 x e-bikes which weigh about 52 lbs each. Was debating between this and the Thule. Chose the Yakima because fo the positive reviews I read and very happy I did. Assembly and Installation wasn't difficult but it did take some time to get everything adjusted correctly. But once I did, it's only about 10 minutes to load / unload the bikes. The rack is very sturdy and transported our bikes safely and securely. In addition, service from etrailer was fantastic. Communication was awesome and delivery was great. Both the Yakima OnRamp and etrailer.com highly recommended!

I really like my OnRamp Bike Ramp. Although not terribly difficult to mount on the trailer hitch, wish it were a bit easier. To get a "snap in", "snap out" mount, one is going to have to pay a lot more. The OnRamp is good value for the money.

- Y36FR
by:

The spec information from web site said ramp will take up to widths of 3.25" but the tray is only 2" and will not work! The main reason for buying was the ramp feature so I did not have to lift my bikes one of which is 60 lbs. I still have to lift them, not happy!

Comments
This is a little silly and confusing. The ramp tray is only 2 inches but the manufacturer says this can fit 3.25 to 4.5 tires with the OnRamp FatStraps Item # Y23FR

I was amazed at at how well built this bike rack was put together. It took me 10 minutes to assemble and the instructions were easy to read.My only issue is that my E bike has large tires on it and there should of been some provisions made for E bikes that have the mountain bike/beach bike type tires.None of the straps will work because they aren't long enough and I am going to have to pay someone to make cradles for the tires/wheels to sit in because the factory ones are to narrow.

- Y36FR
by:

We installed it this afternoon. I am sure with practice loading the bikes will get easier. I do need to get the Yakima Fat Tire Straps Y23FR, at least two sets when they are available. Really appreciate the advise from etrailer personnel. Top Notch.

- Y36FR
by:

So far so good, I installed the rack, which was a breeze, and only used it a couple of times so far the ramp sure makes it nice and easy to load bikes. Going to be moving the rack to the back of my 5th wheel too when I want to take the bike with me.

- Y36FR
by:

Waiting to actually take our Ebikes on our first trip. Received my Yakama ramp the other day and like the way the bikes feel mounted to the car. After a long wait for delivery the rack was delivered and looked great the way it was packaged. Other than the very first step in the instructions showing an error in hole alignment for attaching the rack to the tongue, things were easy to follow. It took quite a bit of time to adjust everything on the rack to fit my particular bikes but now that we are set it looks and feels good. The weight of the rack is a bit more than I anticipated but it feels solid.

- Y36FR
by:

I do love my bike rack but I feel the ramp would function better if it was a little bit wider and higher on the sides. When rolling bike up ramp my tires often slip off. If a revision is ever made I would purchase!!

- Y36FR
by:

A stable and easy to use rack with deficiencies that cost it a star. The locking system for tilting the rack is awkward and unnecessarily cumbersome with 2 pins. The rack needs to be jiggled to remove and insert the pins. At this price point Yakima should have done a better job. I have used hitch bike racks that do not need 2 people to tilt for access to the hatch. Also the bolt that attaches the rack to the hitch has an oversize head >22mm that is uncommon for most ratchet/wrench sets that makes it difficult to torque it down.

- Y36FR
by:

Very well made product. Easily holds two heavy ebikes securely. Easy to install and take on and off the vehicle. Folds up easily. Ramp works great and easy to use. After much research this turned out to be the perfect solution. The etrailer video was helpful as well.

- Y36FR
by:

The rack looks great and was easy to set up with clear instructions for adjustments for our ebikes. Securing our make of ebike was a bit difficult however as the is no crossbar; I had to make several changes to the platform wheel-base to accommodate securing to the frame.

Box arrived partly open, am missing one adjustable Frame clamp and who knows what else. Will not know until we put it together in a couple of days when my son can help me. I expect the missing part will be replaced, who knows if it was on the rack when mailed or stolen in route. I hope other parts are not missing since no parts list was enclosed. Will repost if I can get service for replacing the missing part and it can be found in stock. Hopefully this will get posted.

Rack arrived in excellent condition. It was easy to assemble and attach to the hitch. My bike went up the ramp easily and attached securely. Rack is well built and easy to use.

This bike rack is better than I expected it to be. Very well built holds our two e-bikes perfectly.

by:

It should be Yakima asking for user comments. I used the on-ramp for more than 1500 miles of transport for two Gazelle C8 E-bikes. The off center vertical support post is a bit wobbly, and is not compatible with mounting two step thru frame style bikes. Additionally, an e-bike with typically integrated gram battery requires larger hold down clamps which this rack does not have. The second bike requires the use of a frame cross-bar to provide a clamping point. The included ramp is a welcome feature eliminating having to lift bikes. Although the rack is rated for the e-bike weight, I remove the batteries for transport as recommended by Gazelle.

The connection point in the middle turns and goes up and down to try and get the best fit for all kinds of bike frames. If you have a carbon fiber bike or an alternate frame, you may like the Kuat NV Item # BA22B

etrailer: prompt delivery, fair price! Rack: It does fit my (2) Gazelle T10 eBikes. 1) I found I had to adjust every setting to get bikes to fit. Until you learn there are many adjustments, it does not seem like the center/vertical clamps will reach both seat posts. 2) The ramp is barely usable; my wheels are max it will fit and you must have at least 12ft of clearance on each side of car to get bike lined up with ramp. 3) My bikes have a "walk" feature, this is not usable as its too awkward to hold the walk button down and move around the rack. I found its easier to abandon the ramp and load front then rear wheel. I will rig up a wheel stop, on ends of each wheel holder so bike will not roll off while I strap it in. 4) Rack did NOT come with a lock for hitch pin; this is very disappointing as they say in manual this is an optional item. Every rack I have seen at least has a clip that would otherwise hold the hitch pin in if somehow the bolt loosened up. 5) The rack weight is the lightest I have found. 6) You must load the first bike (closest to car) from car passenger side. This will avoid you bike pedals hitting the vertical bar. That means you must load the 2nd bike manually as there is no way to get the pedals past the vertical bar. I will get used to this, I hope. 7) The rack is a few inches above the receiver (part that goes into hitch) so if you have a low hitch this might be an issue with ground clearance. With both bikes mounted up, it seems very stable and hopefully will be secure in travel.

Comments
Thank you for all of the points. The ramp length is 52 inches so it is important to have that space available to utilize the ramp. The hitch lock that secures the rack to your vehicle is sold separately at item # Y07235

  • Comparing the Two Best E-Bike Racks from Thule and Yakima
For heavier e-bikes like yours there are two frontrunners for bike racks to consider with the Thule EasyFold XT part # TH903202 and the Yakima OnRamp part # Y36FR. What sets these apart from others is they both have ramps to make loading and unloading bikes easier since e-bikes are heavy. The EasyFold folds down into a smaller size when not in use which helps for garage storage but the OnRamp is 6 lbs lighter at 39 lbs compared to 45. That's how I'd pick if I were you. However, if you need a longer strap, you can switch out the original strap with fat straps # Y02470. These straps will work in the cradles of the OnRamp for attaching your bike's frame.
