Video Transcript for Yakima HoldUp EVO Platform Rack Review

Speaker 1: Today we're going to be taking a look at the Yakima HoldUp Evo two bike platform rack for two inch hitches, part number Y02479.The Yakima HoldUp Evo enables it to carry up two bikes at the rear of your vehicle with an option of four if you we're to get the additional add on. With this particular one, I like because you can actually tilt it away with both bikes still attached to get rear hatch access. Which may be difficult with your hatch style. Also you don't have to lift the bike up over your head to put it in place like you would for the roof style. Which can be a little taxing especially with a taller vehicle like this.As I said earlier, this can tilt away with both bikes still attached. What makes it different from the previous HoldUp, normally you would have like a red knob on the other side here that you would have to pull out.

And that can be a little awkward when you're trying to tilt it away, especially if you we're to have four bikes on this. What makes this a little bit easier is, we have this handle up at the front, which is going to make it a little bot more simpler for us to move this back.So holding onto the bike rack itself, and then coming up to our handle here. We'll push forward then let it tilt away. And now we have full hatch access. And there's plenty of space in between the hatch and the bike rack itself. And now we'll lift this back into position.

This can be a little bit tough especially when you have some heavier bikes on here. But just lift it back up until you hear that click and then you're ready to go.The HoldUP Evo has a lot of modifications to it. One being it's already fat bike ready and can carry E-Bikes up to 50 pounds. Also this bike rack features little to no bike to bike contact thanks to this spacing between the arms themselves. Now when you have hanging style bike racks, that might be a little bit harder to do especially once you get to the three to four range where you're trying to spread everything apart evenly. And should there be contact between the pedals or something like that.

We do have two bolts on either side in this slot here, so you can adjust this back and forth as necessary too. And of course on the end here, we do have Yakima bottle opener which comes equipped on most bike racks. This is a bike rack that grips your bikes by the front wheel here. And that's going to enable you to carry a wide variety of bikes without the need for any bike adapter bars or anything like you would have for say hanging style bike racks. And also for additional security, it does have these cable locks that are integrated into the arms themselves. And this is to help lock your bikes to the bike rack and these are going to be keyed alike with the hitch lock, which we'll get to later. The wheel arms feature a ratcheting arm, which makes it very easy to put on and take off.

Just push it down into place and when it's ready, push the button in to release it.It holds the rear tire in place with this strap here, as well as this cradle. Both the front cradle and the rear cradle can hold a wide variety of tires from 20 to 29 inches in diameter and width up to five inches. And the rear cradle's also movable to accommodate bikes of different lengths. And then to fold it up, you again come to that handle up at the front and just push it up against your vehicle. And this is going to be for those close quarter situations such as parking or putting it in your garage. Pull towards you and push up.Another improvement on this bike rack is the pedal system. We'll have this kick start pedal system here. You push down on it with your foot to be able to fold it down into place to get ready to load up your bikes. While before again, you would have that knob at the front, which could be a little trying to get to from time to time. One of the nicer things about this rack which is shared with a lot of other Yakima racks. Is that it has a tool free installation into your hitch. And by that, you simply slide it into place, push the gray knob pin in like so. Then we have this anti-rattle knob at the end, you turn to the right to tighten it up. That's going to take the shake and play out of the shank. And on top of that, it locks into place and this is keyed alike with your cable lock. So it'll just free spin and it can't be removed from the hitch and it's secure. And it also has this dust cover to keep out the road dirt and grim while you travel.Just to give you a quick measurement. From the center of the pin here to the start of the bike rack here is going to be about four and 1/4 inches. From the center of the hitch pin hole to the closest part of the bike rack, that's going to be about eight inches when it's folded up. From the furthest point out, that's going to be about 17 and 3/4 inches. With it folded down, that's going to be about 34 inches to the edge here. And the closest point to the center of the hitch pin hole when it's folded out, that's going to be about 13 and 1/2 inches. The weight of the carrier's going to be 50 pounds and the weight capacity of the bike rack is going to be 50 pounds per bike. So always keep that in mind when loading. When comparing this with other bike racks, one that comes up is going to be the Rocky Mounts Monorail two bike rack for two inch hitches. One of the major differences between these two racks is going to be the actual carrying capacity. With the Rocky Mounts Monorail having a carrying capacity of 60 pounds per bike and the Yakima HoldUP Evo having a 50 pound per bike weight capacity.Another difference be these two bike racks is how it installs into the hitch. With the Rocky Mounts having an anti-rattle bolt and lock and of course the Yakima HoldUP having a toolless install. Also when it comes to ease of access or ease of use. While the HoldUP does have the foot pedal as well as the handle that makes it easier to tilt away from the vehicle. With the Rocky Mounts Monorail, the handle is right at the end of the bike rack, which you can easily grab with your hand to tilt it away. Now that we've gone over some features of the HoldUp Evo, let's go ahead and show you how it installs. It's very easy. Simply lift it up and slide it in to the shank of your hitch. You want to line up the pin hole like so. Then we'll take our push pin here with the gray knob and just push that in place. Then we'll come to out anti-rattle knob here to start tightening that up. And as you tighten this up you may need to move it around a little bit. It's going to help it tighten up just a little bit better. Get it nice and snug. You see all that play there as we're tightening it down back and forth. Now you see all that shake and play is gone. So we'll take our included key. Lock that in place and now it just free spins, so it can't be loosened up and now it's secure. To fold down our bike rack, it's very simple. There's a pedal here at the front, you just push down with your foot and let come towards you. Wait til you hear that click and then we'll fold everything out. We'll start by folding out our wheel cradles. And then we'll fold out our hook arms as well. Next we'll loosen up our wheel straps here. You push in the gray tab and that'll release it. We'll keep them in the open position. We'll do this on both. And now we can grab our first bike and set it in place. Then we'll bring our hook up. You want to have it about an inch or less from our forks or from our frame here. And then push it down nice and tight. And then we'll strap up the rear wheel. With our rear strap here, we just want to make sure we're not damaging the spokes once we install this. Our final step before we install our second bike is we're going to secure our bike at the rear here in place. We'll wrap around our lock and make sure it wraps around the frame. Then we'll bring it back up front. Then we'll take our included key. And now it's secured to our bike rack. Now we can install our second bike and repeat this process. Now a quick note when loading up bikes. You always want to put the heaviest bike towards the vehicle. You don't want that hanging off the rear here. Now with our front bike here, we're not going to have enough length to get back by going through the frame. But you can fix that by going through the frame in this portion here instead and that's just as good. With everything installed, now we'll take it out on our test course and show you how it looks. First we'll take it onto our slalom course. This will show you the side to side action such as making turns or evasive maneuvers. Now we're at the solid speed bumps, which simulates going into your driveway or parking lots. And there you have it for the Yakima HoldUp Evo two bike platform rack for two inch hitches, part number Y02479.

I assembled and installed the rack at a leisurely pace. It took a little while to get the spine bolt properly aligned, but once I got past that the rest of the installation went quickly. I’m guessing it was about half an hour from start to finish and a good bit of that was unpacking the rack and all its hardware. Mounting my beach cruiser was easy. I road-tested everything and I’m very happy with this purchase. The advice I got from Kyle at etrailer was excellent and follow up has been great. 517147

Overall very impressed with quality of the bike rack. The only issue I have is with my long wheel base Fat bike. It wants to rock out of the front tire cradle because the back tire is past the rack and the weight of the bike pushes it rearward. To solve it I have to bungee the rear tire to the bike rack frame pulling it to the front. You can see the green bungee in my picture. This does not happen with my wife’s bike. This is mounted on a 2016 Yukon. With the rack tipped pack you can lift the gate about 3/4 of the way to access the rear area. Etrailer shipped super fast. 543175

The products are good, ordering the parts were easy but the packaging was a little rough. I purchased a bike rack and two bearing buddy bras that they stuffed inside the rack box, need less to say they were crushed in shipping. The bra's are soft plastic and are still okay to use but the packing was wasted. 547465

I received the Yakima bike rack just yesterday so have not used it yet. I will be using the rack for a Giant eBike and a Trek roadbike. Everything in my dealings with etrailer was very smooth. I even received the shipment a day early. Brendan was very professional and good to work with. I would recommend etrailer for your bike rack needs. 546334

Have yet to install but wanted to comment on the great customer service. Initially was sent the wrong item. When I contacted the seller they immediately responded by sending the correct hitch and a prepaid return label. Additional, they lived up to their competitive price policy and gave me credit when I found the same item at a lower price. Fantastic customer service. Check back later for hitch review. 509929

Review from a similar Yakima HoldUp EVO in Hitch Bike Racks

Reasonably quick delivery from etrailer, no issues there. The rack arrived in decent shape (boxes weren't destroyed), and assembly of the 2-place rack and the add-on only took ~1 hour. I am somewhat concerned that the cross-bars where you attach the trays that hold the bicycles are welded to the underside of the rack. Seems it would be much stronger if it were welded on top. I'm hoping the 4 bolts that hold these on will hold up over time - I had my last bike rack for 20+ years, we'll see if these can go the distance. 557050

Comments

As long as the rack is assembled and used according to the instructions, the rack is covered by a limited lifetime warranty. Yakima does a very good job of standing behind their products.

  • Compatibility of EcoHitch Trailer Hitch Receiver and Yakima Hold Up Evo on 2017 Subaru Outback
  • If you have the 2 inch EcoHitch # 306-X7266, then the 2-1/2 inch from hitch pin hole to outermost bumper will have no issues when using the Yakima HoldUp EVO 2 Bike Platform Rack - 2" Hitches # Y02479 or 4 bike # Y02479-2. It will be very similar to the Crosstrek videos I've attached regarding clearance space for your reference. • To carry your beach cruiser, a men's 3G Newport, with your 2017 GMC Sierra 1500, I highly recommend checking out the Yakima HoldUp EVO # Y02479. The HoldUp EVO fits 2" hitches and can carry bikes with tires that are up to 5" wide with wheel diameters between 20" and 29" and up to 50 lbs. This is a wheel-mount rack that has many of what I like to call quality-of-life features, including simple installation in your hitch with the turn of the anti-rattle knob. • Thank you for all of the details regarding your situation! I will do my best to address all of your concerns so that you can go on rides with your sons in the future. You are correct that an adapter will reduce the weight rating of the trailer hitch by 50% but the good news is that it won't reduce the weight rating of your vehicle at all (which is 100 lbs for tongue weight found in the owner's manual). The Draw Tite hitch part # 75659 actually has an open back and does not have a stopper so it would work well for you as long as your bike rack is designed for a 2 inch trailer hitch.
