Image Descriptor

The Convoy lets you carry 1 bike on the back of your vehicle. It has a padded, ratcheting hook that can hold your bike by the frame or the wheel. The large front wheel cradle and sliding, ratcheting rear-wheel strap let you carry a bike regardless of size, frame design, suspension, or brake style. A pin at the base lets you tilt the rack with your bike loaded for access to your vehicle's rear cargo area, and fold it up for storage. It also has a locking hook and a locking, anti-rattle hitch pin that secure your bike to the rack and the rack to your vehicle. A 1-bike extension unit (sold separately) converts the rack into a 2-bike carrier.

Pivoting Upright Arm with Ratcheting Hook

upright arm

The pivoting upright arm has a ratcheting hook that grabs your bike firmly by the front wheel or the frame. This hook lets you rapidly load and unload your bike, and it has a rubber pad that won't scratch or scuff your bike paint. You can bolt the arm to the rear wheel tube to secure your bike by the frame, or bolt the arm to the front wheel tube to secure your bike by the wheel. The wheel-mount option is perfect for carbon frames and other sensitive bike frames. Mounting hardware is included.

pivoting arm

The arm pivots nearly 180 degrees from left to right. This lets you fold the arm down when not in use so you can access your vehicle's rear cargo area.

Large Front-Wheel Cradle

front wheel cradle

The front wheel cradle is extra-wide to accommodate fat bike wheels.

Sliding Rear-Wheel Cradle

sliding rear wheel cradle

The rear-wheel cradle adjusts to accommodate most bike lengths. Simply slide the strap to where the wheel meets the cradle then ratchet it tight to secure the bike's rear wheel to the rack. The rack includes an extra-long strap that accommodates fat tires up 5" wide.

Tilting and Folding Option

Image Descriptor

A removable pin in the base lets you tilt the rack - with your bike loaded - for access to your vehicle's rear cargo area. When you are not carrying your bike you can fold the rack up against the rear of your vehicle and re-insert the pin to hold it in place.

Locking System

Locking hookLocking hitch pin

The locking hook secures your bike to the rack and the threaded hitch pin secures the rack to your hitch receiver. The hitch pin also serves as an anti-wobble device to eliminate rattling in the receiver. The sliding keyhole cover on the lock keeps out dirt and moisture.

Optional 1-Bike Add-On

Modular designInstalling the add-on to the base

There is a 1-bike add-on (sold separately) that lets you to convert the Convoy from a 1-bike carrier to a 2-bike carrier. To install the add-on remove the caps on the base unit, slide the tab on the add-on unit into the slot on the base unit, and secure it with the included hardware.

Video Transcript for Rola Convoy 1-Bike Platform Rack Review

Speaker 1: Today, we're going to be taking a look at the Rola Convoy platform-style 1 bike rack for 1-1/4" hitches, part number 59307. This bike rack is great for on-the-go bikers. It's going to allow you to transport your bike to the trail head. With a weight capacity of up to 50 lbs, it'll hold a wide variety of bikes, road bikes, mountain bikes, women's and children's bikes, bikes with alternative frame styles, and fat bikes, with a tire width up to 5".A unique feature about this bike rack, is that the mast here can be configured three different ways to fit your bike. At the front-most position, it's ideal for holding your bike by its front tire, like on our carbon fiber bike, where we don't want any frame contact. The center position for our mass is ideal for our bike with the alternative frame style.

You can see how the hook landed just in the center of the frame. The third position for the mast is great if you just intend to hold your bike by its frame, like on our mountain bike here.Like most platform-style bike racks, we have the ability to tilt the rack away, so we can gain access to our rear hatch, and we can do this even with our heaviest bike loaded. We'll simply want to pull the two pins, come around to the back of the rack. We're going to pick up slightly, pull towards us and then bring it back until it rests. As you can see, we can open up our rear hatch and remove any cargo, gear, groceries, anything we might have with us on our trip. One other great feature is, the hook can be completely removed from the center mast.

This can be very helpful when loading and unloading your bike. With the bike removed, you can see the three locations for your center mast. The tool is included to relocate it.Here, you can see the front wheel cradle. It's designed to accommodate your road bikes, mountain bikes and fat tires, up to 5" wide. The second half of our wheel cradle pivots.

This is so it can accommodate tire diameters up to 29". Our rear tire secures with a ratchet style strap. It includes a longer strap for our fat tire bikes. The rear wheel cradle is adjustable along the platform. It's going to work with wheel bases up to 48".When not in use, the center mast folds flat.

We'll simply pull up the T-Pin, bring it down until it rests, and the pin snaps in place, and by doing this it allows us to then fold the whole platform up against our vehicle for compact storage. Remove that pin and clip. From here, we'll just lift it up, realigning the bottom holes. Once the holes are aligned, we can then reinsert that pin and clip. This is ideal for pulling in your garage or a tight parking spot. The hook itself can be locked. That way, our bike by cannot be removed from our bike rack. Two keys are included. It comes with an anti rattle hitch lockThe anti rattle bolt is going to reduce all that play and all that rattle within our receiver and our bike rack, to make a nice solid ride for our bikes. The tool to install it is included. Here are some clearance measurements to help you determine how much you've added to the rear of your vehicle. From the center of the hitch pin hole to the end of the rack is about 30". For clearance between the rack and your vehicle, from the center of the hitch pinhole to the closest part of the rack is about 12". If you'd like to convert this 1 bike rack into a 2 bike rack, you could pick up the addition, with part number 59310.Customers on our site compare the Rola Convoy to the Thule T1, 1 bike platform rack. The Thule T1 works with both 1-1/4" and 2" hitches, while the Rola Convoy only works with 1-1/4" hitches. The Rola does have the ability to expand up to a 2 bike rack, while the Thule is just designed for a 1 bike. The Thule T1 is rated for use on motor homes, while the Rola Convoy is not. The Thule T1 does feature a more solid construction and is a premium choice for 1 bike rack, while the Rola Convoy is more of an economical choice, with some versatility to expand and carry more bikes. Now that we've gone over some features, I'll go ahead and show you how to load up a bike. Now, like all platform-style racks it plugs into your hitch receiver, you line up your pinholes and you install your anti rattle bolt and put on your lock. I've already gone ahead and done this. It's designed to work with you 1-1/4" Class 1 or Class 2 hitch. We've already gone ahead and determined the best position for our center mast, so we'll want to pull out on the pin, rotate it around to get it out of the way. We'll also want to raise out our hook. You'll also want to undo your rear strap. Then we can put our bike in place. We'll rest our front tire into the front wheel cradle, and then we'll rest our rear tire onto the platform. With it in place, we can raise up our hook. It's going to land in front of our brakes or our fork, whatever comes first. We'll bring down or hook until it makes contact with the tire. We'll give it a good push, and then we'll squeeze our grip lock. Now, for securing it to our frame, we would do it the same way. We would just be securing our frame. For the rear wheel strap, we'll position the cradle to where it's centered with our tire, and we'll go between our spokes, feed it through, and then pull it nice and tight. Now we can take it out on our test course and see how it performs. Here on our test course, let's first go into our slalom. This is going to show side-to-side action, such as going around corners or evasive maneuvering. Then onto some speed bumps. This is going to simulate driving over potholes, hitting road debris, or pulling in and out of a driveway. That's going complete our look at the Rola Convoy platform-style 1 bike rack for 1-14" hitches, part number 59307.

Overall, It is a very good and solid rack for the money. It was easy to assemble and install and works well. However, I can't understand why a company that makes a relatively good product ruins it by using cheap locks that don't work. After installing the rack, I decided to check the locking device which locked the racks arm over the bike. Problem was it would not unlock. I could not get the key in the lock for love nor money and spent an hour or two trying. After spending a long time with the service rep on the phone, he decided to send me what he called a master key. (My bike had now been trapped on the back of my car for several days). The master key was a waste of time but eventually after a can or two of WD40 I got the key in the lock and unlocked it. Wil never lock it again and decided not to use the lock on the hitch pin in case that did not work. 654946

This platform hitch rack was purchased to haul an e-bike. The previous rack was under spec for the e-bike’s weight. Overall the rack is great especially considering the price. It rides like bike rack car are all one unit. If I had a gripe it’s when removed from car it’s awkward, hard to move around, does not fit in any space well. I’m going to leave it on the car. 697777

Good quality build, easy assembly (although torque recommendations would be helpful given the relatively soft metal the bolts and pin are made of-don't over tighten!). Holds bikes securely but even with the uprights locked a simple 8mm allen wrench will allow a bike to be stolen. Modular design is nice and just 2 bolts will allow you to add another bike holder. Upward bend of part that plugs into the hitch and design are excellent for maintaining some of the departure angle, esp on off road applications. 721768

Review from a similar Rola Convoy in Hitch Bike Racks

I purchased this bike rack several weeks ago but wanted to test it before writing a review. Just completing a 163 mile round trip to a bike ride I can say this rack performed flawlessly. It is easy to assemble, holds my road bike securely, is lockable for security, and versatile enough to hold any bike you own. Etrailer provided the shipping and I couldn't be happier, I was able to track the shipment and it arrived a day early, big plus. Another cool feature of the etrailer website is the videos describing the product features and actually showing the rack on a road test, way cool. If you are looking for a quality bike rack from an outstanding company you need to buy from etrailer. 720561

Everything fit together as expected, very good quality, heavy built to handle my 70lb e-bike, liked the anti rattle feature attaching the unit to the vehicle receiver. Plan on taking the bike from Mich to Fla in Dec,glad to have 2 locks to protect the bike on overnight motel stays. 702902

Very well built and very sturdy. Came with all the tools needed for assembly and install. Assembly was a breeze. Works great for carrying my electric bike. I found that mounting the bike clamp so it is between the bike and the vehicle (inboard) makes for easier loading and unloading. One concern is the visibility when folded. I bought some reflexive tape to add on bottom of the main rail. See photo. 700316

I am pleased with the rack but do have a few problems. 1. I got this type of rack so I could let my tailgate down without removing the rack. The tailgate latch handle hits the pin slot not allowing it to go all the way down. This is no problem unless you add weight to the tailgate which will push into the latch handle. 2. I had to add a cable lock to fully secure my bike. With the arm assembly positioned on the frame, all that needs to be done is lift the front wheel out of the carrier and the bike can be removed. With the arm assembly placed on the front wheel, loosen front wheel for removal and lift bike out. 705604

Was ordered and arrived at my door in 3 days. Unit is very well built. Assembled the rack in about 20 minutes, and the design lends itself to a very easy assembly proces. I will be hauling around a fat bike as well as a 60 pound ebike, so I was interested in this rack due to the heavier weight rating. Online reviews of the product eased the selection process, and were an accurate reflection of the Convoy. Icing on the cake? A personal email from Carol C as a follow up when the rack was delivered. In this day and age, very few retailers, online or not, would follow this practice. I will continue to use etrailer - the Rola convoy was a good choice! 611467

Heavy duty built. The mounted bike tips to the front of the vehicle rather than verticle, I assume that is the design goal. Great value. 658918

Review from a similar Rola Convoy in Hitch Bike Racks

This is the second rack. The first I ordered didn't work for me and Will at etrailer was great to work with on the return, getting suggestions on the replacement, and getting that replacement in time for my trip. The Rola was ordered Monday and was in my garage on Thursday. I ordered the add on rack for a second bike so there were two large boxes. Contrary to other reviews I found the install directions quite clear and the assembly of both pieces was done in 30 minutes. This is a heavy duty rack and the heft says quality to me. I used the hitch to assemble the rack. That made it easy and I recommend it. The rack is adjustable and easily adapts from mountain bike to road bike to my wife's bike. There is no sway or movement while driving. The tilt function is simpler than in the video even with two bikes loaded. One note: turn off park sense if you have a Jeep. You will get an alarm and automatic braking when you back up with the rack and bikes attached. Thank you etrailer. 702729

Review from a similar Rola Convoy in Hitch Bike Racks

Just a few drives with this rack, but excellent so far. First, E-Trailer’s website and customer service was/is fantastic. If you haven’t noticed already, the amount of info on the site is incredible. They make it easy to conduct research. In our case, we needed a rack that could handle heavy downhill bikes and clear a rear-mounted spare tire (2011 RAV 4). This rack was on backorder for a while and E-Trailer staff did a wonderful job of keeping us up-to-date and providing options. The rack itself is very robust and well-constructed. It is easy to assemble and comes with good instructions. It is a heavy rack, but most heavy bike/e-bike racks will be – consider a second person to assist with assembly and mounting when the rack is still unfamiliar to you. I would absolutely buy this particular rack from this specific retailer again. 695359

For my 2012 FJ Cruiser 2”hitch. Easy to assemble in an hour, came with tools and three locks. Abit heavier than the T2 Thule Classic it replaced, but the materials are rugged and heavy duty on the Rola. The additional key/lock for the second bike platform was different, but appreciate they came equipped with locks. This review was written the day it was shipped to me. The distance from my spare tire was ample. 592517

So far I am happy with my purchase of the Rola Bicycle carrier I purchased from etrailer. The rack fits with a Rad Mini E-bike mounted on my 2005 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon with 35' spare tire, AND... fuel & water cans mounted on the rear with plenty of clearance even with no bike mounted and folded up (check out the pictures). It also works well with the off-road camper trailer that often follows the same Jeep during event weekends. 636053

Review from a similar Rola Convoy in Hitch Bike Racks

This goes on the back of a Jeep that does some rough off roading to get to a few prime biking trails. My last carrier shook itself apart so I decided to go one step up the price range and as soon as I picked the box up I knew this was more substantial than my last carrier, once unboxed I was pleasantly surprised at how well this was built. The enclosed instructions were good and once it was easily assembled it is rock solid in the receiver. It still has yet to go on the trail but from what I see so far I think this is going to work out well. I called this order in because I had some questions about shipping options, great customer service from Jesse who kept me advised of the status all through the order and shipping process. etrailer is now on my "good guy" list. 557896

when I got the box it looked intimidating. Once I started putting it together it was easy. The instructions are clear and everything went together perfectly. Extra strap was provided so that was a plus. The rack itself doesn't move when I am driving. My bike was secure and didn't move at all. The only thing I wish was longer was the arm that goes over my front wheel. I have to slide the the hook off to go over my wheel. Not a big deal. Now if I could do something about the other drivers getting so close to my bike while I am driving. 736482

  • Best Bike Rack for E-Bike with Fenders
I do have an option for you but since your e-bike has fenders, the Thule T1 1-Bike Platform Rack part # TH9041 will not work for you. Instead, I recommend the Rola Convoy 1 Bike Platform Rack part # 59307 which can be used as a frame mount bike rack and has a 50 lb weight capacity. The best thing about this bike rack is that you can carry more bikes if you would like by adding the 1 Bike Add-On for Rola Convoy Platform Rack part # 59310. The Convoy has a tilting feature that will allow...

The Kuat Transfer 1 Bike Platform Rack # TS01B will allow you to carry a bike with fenders if they are mounted in a way that will allow the clamping force needed to secure the bike without damage to the fender. With plastic fenders I don't recommend using that bike rack as it could deform your fender. For your RadCity Commuter bike, I recommend the Rola Convoy 1 Bike Platform Rack for 1-1/4" Hitches # 59307 or if you have a 2 inch hitch receiver # 59308. This will allow you to secure...

  • Does Rola Offer the Convoy 1 Single Bike Rack for Both Hitch Sizes
Rola makes two versions of the Convoy 1 single bike rack, a version that fits 1-1/4 inch hitches like part # 59307 and a version that fits 2 inch hitches like the # 59308. They do not offer a way to have either rack fit the other hitch size. So basically there isn't an adapter that would allow the 1-1/4 inch rack to fit a 2 inch hitch. We do have the Kuat Transfer 1 part # TS01B which can fit both hitch sizes with it's included hitch adapter as well. I attached a couple review videos...
