Video Transcript for Curt Long Shank Hitch Ball Review

Today, we're going to be taking a look at Curt's two-inch hitch ball with a one and a quarter inch diameter shank. Part number A-90. This is what our ball's going to look like when it's installed on a ball mount. A ball mount doesn't come included with your ball, but you can pick up various ball mounts here at etrailer.com to match it. You want to make sure that whatever weight rating your ball is, the rest of your components match it because you never want to exceed the towing capacity of the lowest amount. If your hitch is only rated for 8,000 pounds, but your ball mount and your ball are rated for 10,000, you don't want to tow more than 8,000 pounds. This is a two-inch ball with a one and a quarter inch diameter shank.

It has a 10,000 pound weight rating and a chrome finish to protect against rust and corrosion. You want to make sure when installing your ball in your ball mount that it has the appropriate size diameter hole that matches the shank for your ball. So, since this is one and a quarter, we want to make sure our ball mount has a one and a quarter opening. The ball itself is made of steel, so it's going to last you a long time. The length of the shank coming off of our ball is going to measure two and five eighths inches. This is important when determining if it's going to fit in your ball mount, and if you have any accessories that installs along with it that the shank will be long enough to properly install the nut and still have some threads poking through the bottom.

Some accessories you may want to install with your ball when putting it on you ball mount may be an anti-sway for a camper you're pulling behind you.Because this is a two-inch ball, it's going to work with two-inch couplers. If the coupler on your trailer has a different size, you can pick up those here at etrailer.com. Most common sizes are one and seven eighths, two inches, and two and five sixteenth inches.Brophy makes a two-inch hitch ball with a one and a quarter inch diameter shank. However, this ball is only 7,500 pounds and has a two and a quarter inch shank. So, our Curt here has not only a higher weight rating, but a slightly longer shank so it'll be a little bit more useful with more accessories and have higher towing capacities. Now, we'll show you how to get it installed on your ball mount.

We've got an older unit here, so as not to mar up a brand new unit. You'll want to install it in a vice as this does torque to a very high foot pounds. You'll set your ball mount on it in whatever position you'd like. So, we've got a drop or rise here, we're going to be putting it in the drop position. After you've got your mount on, you'll slide on the washer followed by the nut. We're going to a use a one and seven eighths inch socket for this ball here.

Same procedures are going to be similar for this ball mount as in any other ball mount. Although, your socket size and torque spec may vary. We'll then just torque it to the specifications. We can now take it out of the vice and we're ready to put it in our hitch. Now, if you don't have a bench vice to hold your ball, you can put an adjustable wrench on it, slide it into your hitch receiver, and that will just butt up against the side of it. Depending on your ball mount, it may vary if it would hit there, so what you can do is you can also turn it sideways and have that wrench swing up and hit on your receiver. You'll have your wrench on the ball mount side and your torque wrench on the nut side tighten it down. And, that completes our look at Curt's two-inch hitch ball with one and a quarter inch diameter shank.

After balking at the cost to have an auto-shop add a trailer to our Toyota Highlander, we found etrailer.com and decided to take a chance. The "how to" videos factored considerably in our decision to buy ... they made it look so easy! And surprise! It really -WAS- that easy. We used standard block-type ramps (the kind you can buy for $40 ) to get the SUV up off the ground high enough to get underneath to do the work. Everything came off as easy as it was showed in the videos. Other than the fact this bar is a heavy so we had our teen daughter help hold it steady while we bolted it into place (i.e., get help for when you go to lift it), it went super smooth. Thanks for saving us $280 over the cost the car dealer quoted us! P.S. - be sure to watch the linked videos so you get the right trailer lighting attachment and ball hitch for your new hitch. 510345

We are very happy with our trailer hitch, and all the accoutrements that we purchased with it. Your videos were enormously helpful, the hitch went on easily with a bit of help from our teenage daughter to lift it up into place, and we recommend your business to friends when they express an interest in getting a camper.

My order was received on time and with everything that was ordered. The hitch has been put on my trailer and working great. Thanks to Suzanne and her knowledge of the product was excellent.Thank You. The 2" ball was just what I needed thought it may have not been available for the bigger hitch but thanks to Suzanne it was just what I needed. Thanks again and I'm sure if I ever need more from E Trailer I will be in touch. 162651

Very good product and easy to install. My configuration allowed the lift brackets that came with the order to be used, so I didn't have to order the bracket kit. The installation videos on the e-trailer were excellent. Delivery was also prompt, only four days for me. My trailer only required a 2" ball rather than the 2 5/16" ball supplied. I had trouble finding a 2" ball locally with a 1 1/4" diameter shank. I ordered this from e-trailer and again delivery was prompt. I did have to buy some larger wrenches to work with the 2" nuts on the balls so keep that in mind if your a due-it-yourselfer. The manual was pretty good, but I got more out of the videos. I little more description on the initial setting of the friction sway control would have been helpful (i.e. is the factory setting midway? lowest? highest)? 267227

Economy shipping was lightning fast! Product is just what I wanted; it is pulling my 7,500lb horse trailer with no problem. The other reviews that worry about the chrome scratching...I think most of us know that's a given when one places a few tons of metal on top. Great product so far! 159864

I ordered 2 of these hitch bells, as they are hard to locate due to the large shank diameter. They are of good quality and the service and shipping time were excellent. 566918

Simplicity is the key here. Very easy to order, customer service (Lisa D) asked a few questions about vehicle and what I needed to Tow, and like magic, she found this at a very good price which saved me $$$. It was very easy to install, heavy duty construction!! It shipped faster than other online sites could have done, a day and half later, UPS showed up with it. Back to installation, I watched the video and it worked as advertised. I never used one before, but it just works. Very satisfied. 552984

High quality. the nut is bigger than the balls with the 1" shank. I have a wrench for the nut on 1" shank but not this one, I was able to get it tight enough with a monkey wrench and a bench vice. you could probably get a wrench form harbor freight for cheep or take it somewhere and have them install it. 27248

Bought the 10k hitch ball and mount together. Quality seems very good. As both are rated at 10k pounds, they are heavy and the nut size for the ball is big, about 1 7/8". I don't have a wrench or socket to fit it, biggest I have is 1 1/2. Anyway, I borrowed a wrench to get it on and will buy a socket to fit. 721827

WOW! I wanted to purchase a really strong ball mount and this one exceeds my expectations! I also purchased in my order the folding wheel chocks which were made of metal. My plan is to mount those permanently on my car hauler trailer so that when I put the car on, I just drive up against these chocks. This makes loading my car super easy. I really like doing business with etrailer because every order I’ve ever placed his arrived quickly and been with products that are excellent quality. 715135

  • The best weight distribution system for your brand new 2019 Palomino Solaire that's being pulled by your Silverado is the Reese Strait-Line # RP66084 because of its self-adjusting sway control that prevents side-to-side movement before it even begins and its 600 to 1,200 pound tongue weight capacity that matches the potential range on your setup perfectly. When picking out a weight distribution system the most important factor to consider is the total tongue weight of your towing setup....

  • Hitch Extender that is At Least 3-1/2 Inches Deep From Pin Hole to Inside Receiver Tube
  • The Roadmaster Htich Extender # RM-071-1075 measures approximately 3 inches deep from the pin hole to the furthest point inside the receiver tube. It's also only designed to be used to flat tow a vehicle with a hitch style tow bar. It can't be used with a ball mount. The Curt Hitch Extender # C45791 has the same measurement of 3 inches and can be used for towing a trailer; however, it has a much lower weight capacity at 3,500 pounds. Also, when using a hitch extender your hitch's...

  • Recommended Suspension Enhancement for 2016 Ford F-150
  • The air springs I recommend for your 2016 Ford F-150 are the Firestone Ride-Rite Air Helper Springs # F2582. These are a confirmed fit for your truck so long as you do not have an in-bed hitch. The Ride-Rite springs are going to enhance your F-150's factory suspension and give you a smoother, more cushioned ride. I've attached a link to a video review of these air springs, as well as a link to a video showing them being installed on a '16 Ford F-150.

  • Best Weight Distribution System for 2012 Ram 1500 5.7L Hemi W/4 Lift and 7,500 lb Travel Trailer
  • You will be okay with a 7,500 lb travel trailer with an appropriate weight distribution system based on the numbers you gave. Because you don't know what trailer you will be getting yet, the Reese Steadi-Flex Weight Distribution System w/ Sway Control # RP66561 is a great option because the total tongue weight range of this system is 700 to 1400 lbs which is a broader range than most. The total tongue weight is the loaded trailer tongue weight along with any cargo behind the rear axle...

  • Recommended Weight Distribution System for Trailer with 650 lb Tongue Weight and 8995 GVWR
  • The Reese Steadi-Flex Weight Distribution System w/ Sway Control # RP66560 is what I recommend for your trailer with a 650 lb tongue weight. This system will work well with your loaded tongue weight as well as any cargo behind the rear axle of your 2015 F-150. This is the total tongue weight you need to account for with your system. This weight distribution system has integrated sway control utilizing trunnion bars and friction material that is similar to automotive brake pads. This...

  • Availability of Weigh Safe System that Includes Weight Distribution
  • The Weigh Safe ball mounts, like part # WS6-2, do not have a Weight Distribution (WD) system that they are compatible with as a WD system will act as the ball mount. If you need to use a WD system then I recommend using a Tongue Weight Scale # 5780 to help make finding your Tongue Weight (TW) much easier. We recommend using a WD system if your trailer weighs more than half the weight of your tow vehicle. If this is the case for you then I highly recommend using a WD system. I really...
