Video Transcript for Curt Long Shank Hitch Ball Review

Today, we're going to be taking a look at Curt's two-inch hitch ball with a one and a quarter inch diameter shank. Part number A-90. This is what our ball's going to look like when it's installed on a ball mount. A ball mount doesn't come included with your ball, but you can pick up various ball mounts here at etrailer.com to match it. You want to make sure that whatever weight rating your ball is, the rest of your components match it because you never want to exceed the towing capacity of the lowest amount. If your hitch is only rated for 8,000 pounds, but your ball mount and your ball are rated for 10,000, you don't want to tow more than 8,000 pounds. This is a two-inch ball with a one and a quarter inch diameter shank.

It has a 10,000 pound weight rating and a chrome finish to protect against rust and corrosion. You want to make sure when installing your ball in your ball mount that it has the appropriate size diameter hole that matches the shank for your ball. So, since this is one and a quarter, we want to make sure our ball mount has a one and a quarter opening. The ball itself is made of steel, so it's going to last you a long time. The length of the shank coming off of our ball is going to measure two and five eighths inches. This is important when determining if it's going to fit in your ball mount, and if you have any accessories that installs along with it that the shank will be long enough to properly install the nut and still have some threads poking through the bottom.

Some accessories you may want to install with your ball when putting it on you ball mount may be an anti-sway for a camper you're pulling behind you.Because this is a two-inch ball, it's going to work with two-inch couplers. If the coupler on your trailer has a different size, you can pick up those here at etrailer.com. Most common sizes are one and seven eighths, two inches, and two and five sixteenth inches.Brophy makes a two-inch hitch ball with a one and a quarter inch diameter shank. However, this ball is only 7,500 pounds and has a two and a quarter inch shank. So, our Curt here has not only a higher weight rating, but a slightly longer shank so it'll be a little bit more useful with more accessories and have higher towing capacities. Now, we'll show you how to get it installed on your ball mount.

We've got an older unit here, so as not to mar up a brand new unit. You'll want to install it in a vice as this does torque to a very high foot pounds. You'll set your ball mount on it in whatever position you'd like. So, we've got a drop or rise here, we're going to be putting it in the drop position. After you've got your mount on, you'll slide on the washer followed by the nut. We're going to a use a one and seven eighths inch socket for this ball here.

Same procedures are going to be similar for this ball mount as in any other ball mount. Although, your socket size and torque spec may vary. We'll then just torque it to the specifications. We can now take it out of the vice and we're ready to put it in our hitch. Now, if you don't have a bench vice to hold your ball, you can put an adjustable wrench on it, slide it into your hitch receiver, and that will just butt up against the side of it. Depending on your ball mount, it may vary if it would hit there, so what you can do is you can also turn it sideways and have that wrench swing up and hit on your receiver. You'll have your wrench on the ball mount side and your torque wrench on the nut side tighten it down. And, that completes our look at Curt's two-inch hitch ball with one and a quarter inch diameter shank.

After balking at the cost to have an auto-shop add a trailer to our Toyota Highlander, we found etrailer.com and decided to take a chance. The "how to" videos factored considerably in our decision to buy ... they made it look so easy! And surprise! It really -WAS- that easy. We used standard block-type ramps (the kind you can buy for $40 ) to get the SUV up off the ground high enough to get underneath to do the work. Everything came off as easy as it was showed in the videos. Other than the fact this bar is a heavy so we had our teen daughter help hold it steady while we bolted it into place (i.e., get help for when you go to lift it), it went super smooth. Thanks for saving us $280 over the cost the car dealer quoted us! P.S. - be sure to watch the linked videos so you get the right trailer lighting attachment and ball hitch for your new hitch. 510345

We are very happy with our trailer hitch, and all the accoutrements that we purchased with it. Your videos were enormously helpful, the hitch went on easily with a bit of help from our teenage daughter to lift it up into place, and we recommend your business to friends when they express an interest in getting a camper.

Economy shipping was lightning fast! Product is just what I wanted; it is pulling my 7,500lb horse trailer with no problem. The other reviews that worry about the chrome scratching...I think most of us know that's a given when one places a few tons of metal on top. Great product so far! 159864

Bought the 10k hitch ball and mount together. Quality seems very good. As both are rated at 10k pounds, they are heavy and the nut size for the ball is big, about 1 7/8". I don't have a wrench or socket to fit it, biggest I have is 1 1/2. Anyway, I borrowed a wrench to get it on and will buy a socket to fit. 721827

Ask the Experts about this Curt Hitch Ball

  • Torque Rating for Nut of Hitch Ball part # A-90
The correct torque for installing hitch ball # A-90 is 450-ft-lbs. You will need either a torque wrench.

  • What is the Size of the Nut on Curt Hitch Ball # A-90
The nut on the Curt hitch ball # A-90 requires a 1-7/8 inch wrench or socket. The nut fits on the 1-1/4 inch shank of the ball. This ball is designed to fit draw bars that are 1/2 inch to 1 inch thick. It was a capacity of 10,000 pounds.

  • How to Choose the Correct Hitch Ball Size
A 2" hitch ball like part # A-90 is pretty standard but you really need to know what size hitch ball your coupler is compatible with. It should be stamped on the trailer coupler itself. If you already have a ball mount then you need to make sure that the shank of your hitch ball is compatible with that as well. The # A-90 has a shank with a 1-1/4" diameter and is 2-5/8" long. For people who will be towing different sized trailers it is a lot easier to have multiple hitch ball options....

  • Curt Hitch Ball Torque Specs for Installation
The 2" Hitch Ball # A-90 requires a foot pound torque of 450. I've attached a diagram showing the Torques Specs for Curt hitch balls to assist. The trailer ball needs to be tightened to a certain torque specification in order to prevent the nut from vibrating loose, so for safety you need to make sure your hitch ball is securely mounted to your ball mount or bumper.

  • Length of Shank on Curt 2 Inch Trailer Ball Part # A-90
The 2 Inch Diameter Ball with Medium Shank, part # A-90 would be the correct ball to use with your Reese SC weight distribution system. The total length of the shank is 2-5/8 inches, while the length of the threaded portion is 2-1/4.

  • Highest Capacity 2 inch Hitch Ball with 1 inch Diameter Shank
The highest capacity 2 inch hitch ball we offer that has a 1-1/4 inch diameter shank is going to be the Curt # A-90 which has a 10k capacity. It is interesting that a 1 inch shank diameter ball # 40038 has a 12k capacity yet has a smaller shank, but the reality is the 1-1/4 inch shank diameter is much rarer than the 1 inch shank so there is just more demand for options in that size.

  • What is the Torque Requirement for Curt 2 Inch Hitch Ball A-90/40090
I would not think in Spain or France that they would use foot pounds since it isn't a metric measurement. But regardless I checked with Curt and the 450 foot pounds is what you would need.

  • Is it Okay if Hitch Ball on Tow Vehicle Bumper is a Couple of Inches Higher Than Trailer Coupler
Ideally, you will want both your tow vehicle and boat trailer to be as level as possible when towing. Some of this will depend a bit on the tongue weight of the trailer you will be pulling. For example, a trailer with a heavy tongue weight may actually lower the bumper on your vehicle enough when attached to reduce the difference in height you referenced in your question. I have attached an article on ball mounts and about halfway down the page it goes into detail on how and why a trailer...

  • Curt Hitch Ball # A-90 Recommendation
The Curt Hitch Ball # A-90 should work very well for you. It has the right ball diameter, weight capacity, shank diameter and enough shank length to install on your ball mount. The # A-90 has a shank length of 2-5/8 inches and your ball mount platform has a thickness of 1-9/16 inches which gives you a little more than an inch for the nut to secure to, which would be plenty. I measured the height of the nut that comes with the # A-90 and found that it is 1 inch thick and the washer...

There are some 10,000 pound capacity balls with a 2 inch diameter but they are part of a Convert-A-Ball Interchangeable ball set. The most popular set is # 901B. It has a 1 inch diameter shank. You will also want to check the capacity of the truck if the ball will be mounted on the bumper. If you have a frame mounted hitch, the capacity will be higher and should...

  • Do 5,000 lb Trailers All Use the Same Hitch Ball Size
That's going to depend on the coupler of the trailer. I can't gaurantee you what size you will encounter so you will need to check with the owner of the trailer currently and ask what it takes. For a 2 inch ball you would want part # A-90 and for a 2-5/16 inch ball # 19286. Most likely it's a 2-5/16 though.
