Video Transcript for All You Need to Know About the Curt Ball Mount for 2-1/2" Hitches

Today we're going to take a look at the CURT ball mount for two and a half inch hitches. This one has an eight inch drop, and a six and a half inch rise, and a 20,000 pound gross towing weight capacity. Now this is a commercial duty ball mount that'll let you hook up your trailer to your tow vehicle. The shank portion right here is what will slide into your vehicle's two and a half inch hitch receiver, and the ball platform right here provides you a mounting point for your hitch ball. Now the hitch balls, we do sell separately on our website, and they are listed on this product page as a related product. Now when you do buy a hitch ball, it will require a shank on that hitch ball of one and a quarter inches, and that's the measurement of this ball hole right here in the ball platform, and see if we put a ruler on that, it's got a one and a quarter inch diameter opening. So when you get a hitch ball you do want to make sure the shank on it is a one and a quarter inch diameter shank. Now both the drop and rise positions are available to ensure level towing.

It has a sturdy, solid forged steel construction, has a nice highly durable carbide black powder coat finish over it, and when you do install this into your hitch receiver, it will require a hitch pin and clip or a hitch lock to secure it to your hitch, and that is not included. You would have to supply that. We also sell those separately on our website, and the pin hole diameter, the size pin you would need is a five eighths inch diameter hitch pin to fit through here.Application on this is two and a half inch by two and a half inch trailer hitch receivers. Now the gross towing weight capacity will depend on what position you use it in. So if it's like it is now, in the drop position, it will be 20,000 pounds.

If you flipped it over into the rise, it'll be 16,000 pounds. Tongue weight will be the same way. It's in the drop position, 2,700 pounds. You flip it in the rise it's 2,160 pounds in the rise position. Now the drop would be like it is now, and that's measured from the top of the shank to the top of the ball platform. So you can see that's going to be eight inch drop, and the rise would be if we flip it over and you insert it in this way, and the same way it's top of the shank top of the ball platform.

So your rise measurement will be six and a half inches. But that should do it for the review on the CURT ball mount for two and a half inch hitches with the eight inch drop and the six and a half inch rise and a 20,000 pound gross towing weight capacity.

  • Ball Mount for 2-1/2-Inch Hitch That Gives 8-Inches of Drop
The Convert-A-Ball 2-1/2-Inch Cushioned Ball Mount # AMSCV-6 provides height drop of 6-inches but since they do not offer one like it with 8-inches of drop you can instead check out the items on the linked page which provide 8-inches of drop. These include both fixed ball mounts like 12K Draw-Tite # 45291 and 20K Curt # C45460 and adjustable ball mounts like Bullet Proof # ED258.

  • Distance From Hitch Pin Hole to Hitch Ball of Curt Ball Mount C45460
We measured the distance from the center of the hitch pin hole to the center of the hitch ball and found that measurements was 10-1/2 inches for the Curt Ball Mount for 2-1/2" Hitches # C45460. This ball mount has a 20,000 lb capacity and gives you either 6-1/2" of rise or 8" of drop; for a hitch ball that will fit the best option is the 2-5/16" Hitch Ball # C40085. I also recommend locking it to your hitch with the Hitch Receiver Lock # e98881. I have added links below to some video...

  • Why Would Curt Ball Mount for 2-1/2 inch Hitch Have Rounder Corners and Fit Loose in Hitch
The Curt Ball Mount for 2-1/2" Hitches # C45460 does seem to have pretty round corners. Most likely they made it this way so that it can fit in the Ford 2-1/2 inch hitches which are known to have very round corners and hard to fit ball mounts into. In general hitch movement is something that people deal with quite a bit. I'd say you got pretty lucky with old ball mount if it fit so tightly that you didn't have any movement. You could use the Quiet Hitch # RM-061 though to take out that...

  • Recommendation for a Drop Ball Mount for 2-1/2 Inch Hitch with a 2 Inch Ball
Hey Brian, the closest you can get to the Curt Ball Mount, # C33JR, with a 2-inch ball is to buy the shank and ball separately. The shank is part # C45460 and a 2-inch ball is part # A-90. I like the forged ball mounts and use one myself. You'll be limited to a 10K capacity with the 2-inch ball, so if you really want something with a pre-torqued/installed ball, the closest we can get you to that price range is the Weigh Safe 180 Adjustable ball mount, # WS22RR. Were there any other...

  • Will a Ball Mount With an 8" Drop Be Sufficient For a 10" Difference In Hitch Height?
I do feel the Curt Ball Mount # C45460 is going to be adequate for your situation with the measurements you provided. You will need to pair this with a 2-5/16" # C40030 hitch ball. Also be sure to grab some Ball Lube # 58117 as this is often overlooked. Due to the position of the ball at the rear of the truck it will squat a little more than I think you are going to anticipate.
