One-Step Installation

The Curt Echo is unique for its plug-and-play installation. With no wiring, modules, or knobs to install, setting up the Echo is a breeze.

Curt Echo Wireless Brake Controller Installation

The main unit plugs into the 7-way at the rear of your Ford F-350, 450, and 550 Cab and Chassis and provides a port for plugging in your 7-way trailer connector. Use the included strap, found inside the cap, to secure the Echo in place. It will help ensure a constant connection between Ford F-350, 450, and 550 Cab and Chassis and trailer.

That done, download the OneControl app on your Apple or Android smartphone and wirelessly pair the unit to your phone via Bluetooth, following the in-app instructions. It should take about 5 seconds for them to pair. Once paired, the LED light on the unit will turn a solid blue. Plug in your trailer's 7-way and let the whole system calibrate for another 5 seconds. When the LED turns green, configure your desired trailer brake settings in the app and save it as a profile. Then you're ready to tow!

Note: See etrailer.com's exclusive 7-way upgrade kit for brake controller installation (ETBC7L - sold separately) if you don't already have a 7-way plug at the back of your Ford F-350, 450, and 550 Cab and Chassis.

Control Your Towing with Your Smartphone and an App

Besides the crazy-easy installation, the Echo is unique for giving you control of your towing through your smartphone. You can set the maximum braking output, adjust the braking sensitivity, apply the manual override - all from the OneControl app.

Completely wireless, the Echo connects to the app via Bluetooth. You can save multiple towing profiles in the app, a big plus if you have a fleet and want to be able to just select a pre-set configuration and get towing. And don't worry; after you've downloaded the app, you don't need to have data on to use the app with the brake controller. You'll be able to receive calls and texts and access your other apps.

User-Friendly OneControl App

Simple, intuitive, and user-friendly, the OneControl App makes it wicked easy to manage your settings and control your trailer.

how does the One Control app work

1. Manual Override

This big orange button in the middle of the app is your manual override. Press and hold the button, and the brake controller will smoothly apply the trailer brakes without applying your Ford F-350, 450, and 550 Cab and Chassis's brakes. This is perfect for stopping sway or controlling your trailer's momentum in an emergency.

Curt Echo App Manual Override Button

Quick tip: Put manual override right at your fingertips by adding this button (C83HR - sold separately) to your dash. The app must be running for the button to work, but it can be in the background while you use other apps on your phone. The button has an adhesive pad for a quick-stick installation and includes an easily replaceable battery.

2. Brake Output Indicator

The outer ring gives you a visual indicator of how much power is being applied to the trailer brakes. This is determined by your max output setting.

3. Max Output

Braking output is the maximum amount of power that will be applied to your trailer's brakes. How much braking output you need is determined by the weight of your trailer; a heavier trailer will need more power to bring it to a stop.

To set your maximum braking output, tap this button and increase or decrease using the + and - buttons. You want to set the braking output as high as you can without locking up the brakes. Once you've set up the brake controller the first time, you shouldn't need to adjust the settings until the trailer load changes, you switch trailers, or road conditions change.

4. Sensitivity Level

This controls the aggressiveness of your trailer's braking, meaning how quickly the brakes reach the max output level. This is a great adjustment to make when you're towing a heavy load and the trailer will need more umph to bring it to a stop so it doesn't push your Ford F-350, 450, and 550 Cab and Chassis forward.

Just like max output, if you need to change your sensitivity level, use the + and - buttons. If your Ford F-350, 450, and 550 Cab and Chassis takes too long to come to a stop, increase the setting. If it stops too abruptly, lower the setting. You may also need to adjust the sensitivity based on your own preferences, or when the trailer load or road conditions change.

5. Ford F-350, 450, and 550 Cab and Chassis Hazard Lights

If you turn on your Ford F-350, 450, and 550 Cab and Chassis's hazard lights, there's a chance the trailer brakes will pulse on and off as the lights flash. Turn this setting on any time you activate your hazard lights to prevent this problem.

Save Multiple Trailer Profiles

Curt Echo App saves multiple trailer profiles

Get on the road faster by saving your settings. With the app, you can add and store multiple profiles for both trailers and Ford F-350, 450, and 550 Cab and Chassiss so that your preferred settings will be ready to go as soon as you hook up. This is perfect if you own a fleet and don't want to have to reset the controller every time you swap out trucks, trailers, or drivers. You'll have the ideal settings saved and waiting for you. To switch between profiles, just swipe left or right.

OneControl: One-Stop App for Towing

If you like the idea of monitoring your trailer from your phone, the other OneControl systems could be a great fit for you.

The Curt True Course (C94VV - sold separately) is an advanced Bluetooth sway control system that automatically triggers the trailer brakes (independent of the Ford F-350, 450, and 550 Cab and Chassis's brakes and the brake controller) when it detects dangerous trailer movement. The Curt Tire Linc (C54VV - sold separately) Bluetooth TPMS monitors the temperature and pressure of your trailer tires. All of these systems use the OneControl app so you can manage all of them in the same place on your phone.

LED Status Indicator

troubleshooting Echo brake controller

The LED indicator light on the top of the plug-in module will show you when the brake controller is connected. You can also check the LED for simple diagnostics when you need to troubleshoot.

Weatherproof Construction

Is the Curt Echo weatherproof

Because the Echo mounts outside the Ford F-350, 450, and 550 Cab and Chassis, it's designed for maximum weather resistance. The unit is filled with an epoxy resin that seals off the internal components from moisture and the elements. The Echo also has a soft locking tab for connecting to your 7-way plug that reduces vibration and helps ensure a constant connection.

Proportional Braking

What is proportional Braking

The Curt Echo brake controller comes equipped with proportional braking to give you the best towing experience. Proportional braking means that your trailer brakes mimic your tow Ford F-350, 450, and 550 Cab and Chassis's brakes. If you slam on the brakes in your Ford F-350, 450, and 550 Cab and Chassis, your trailer brakes will activate with the same intensity; if you brake lightly, your trailer brakes lightly too. The trailer's braking is in proportion to your Ford F-350, 450, and 550 Cab and Chassis's braking. This saves wear and tear on the tires and the brakes on both your Ford F-350, 450, and 550 Cab and Chassis and trailer.

The Echo uses an internal 3-axis accelerometer to sense how your Ford F-350, 450, and 550 Cab and Chassis is braking so it can send the right amount of braking power to your trailer. It measures the inertia of your tow Ford F-350, 450, and 550 Cab and Chassis and activates the trailer's brakes to ensure that your trailer slows at the same rate. The result is uniform braking across your towing setup. No push-pull action - just smooth, proportional braking every time.

I like the fact that I have a proportional brake controller I can stick in my glove box. It doesn’t have to be hardwired to the vehicle which is nice because I can use it on different applications. This one is definitely a plus over time delay brake controllers.

After an initial issue and replacement, the product has worked very well. Having an adjustable proportional controller that you can throw in your glove box is pretty handy. It’s response time is very quick.

We have been using the Echo wireless brake controller for about a year with our little travel trailer. In general it works well, no problems with the installation or connection to our phones. There is a little rubber strap that supposedly keeps it attached to the vehicle, but it is pretty useless. We keep a bunch of 1cm wide zip ties in the car in order to secure the unit to our car.

The echo wireless works well. It is easy to setup for different trailers or road conditions. The new software update improves connectivity. The little safety strap that it came with is long gone, and it was useless to begin with. I just keep a bag of zip ties in the car to secure the echo to the cars seven pin connector.

Customer service response is prompt. Order arrived quickly. I’ve attached, synced, and tested the controller on my 2020 Tacoma, pulling my 16ft travel trailer. Lights and app indicate it is working. I’m still testing adjustments, as I’ve never used a brake controller. I saw some reviews that complained about brake pulsing at low speeds. I have NOT experienced this problem. Manual actuation works well at low speed. Information says app must run in the foreground. I’m trying to determine what that means. Can I open the app and switch to another app, or does the app need to stay on constant display?

Etrailer Expert

Brooke M.

2/26/2024

Yes! The app should be the one on constant display on your phone screen; the one you are viewing. It looks like the reason is if its running in the background, if you have a different app on display while towing, it can cause delays in breaking times. Best to be safe and just run the OneControl Auto app when towing.

This controller has worked flawless for me. I’ve used it on a 2009 Lexus RX350, 2022 Lexus RX350, and 2022 Lexus GX460. Never an issue connecting or operating. My father, on the other hand, has the exact controller for use with his 2018 Ford F-150, and has had many issues with connection and operation. I love it’s modularity and simplicity.

Dan

3/13/2024

Still using this controller frequently, even though my GX has a pigtail for a wired controller. This is just so simple and quick to plug in when I need it, and take out when I don’t. Zero flaws, zero hiccups, zero issues.

2019 Honda Ridgeline

The Curt Wireless brake controller installed easily on my 2019 Honda Ridgeline for towing my 24' travel trailer. It worked well on the one occasion that I had to use it. Nice to have the visual in the app on how the brakes were being applied.

by:

The Echo is a convenient trailer brake. It's easy to set up and use every time I hook up my trailer. I use Bluetooth from an old smartphone mounted to the left of of my steering wheel so I can keep my cell phone free.

The only problem is that the rubber strap kept getting un latched from the rubber pin. So I just use two bungee-balls to keep the ECHO connected to the car harness and the trailer plug. (see Photo)

Chevrolet Tahoe

A great controller. It was simple to setup and use. I love the ability to use it in different vehicles ---- and no wiring hassle. Plug and play, make a couple adjustments and it worked like promised. I have showed it to several friends, who were totally amazed, had no idea there was a product like it out there. Towing a 18ft enclosed trailer with a Tahoe presently.

by:

Works amazingly well after the brief learning curve. You just can’t over think the process and do it. What a difference not having to install a brake controller on a new vehicle. I would buy it again.

by:

So far it's doing exactly as it was designed to do. Only issue is that stupid rubber strap. It has a button on it and as I was trying to loop this thing over the plug door, it flew off. Why would you make one removable? In any case, I put a zip tie around it. I was lucky to find the button on the ground and tried it again only for it to fly of once again. I like the controller how it works and it's simplicity

by:

Got delivered in a timely manner was in great condition. Just activated it this morning. Followed instructions ran into trouble when connecting to it with the app. It needs to be connected to your trailer as well to activate it so it can be located when searching for it. Setting it up was ok after that. I hooked it up and moved around some while using breaks on truck. Used the direct break on phone to see if it would stop, it did. Will use it sometime after I figure out the truck towing settings, sensors.

It is a new year and this five start rated product is now a three star. The reason being is the forced update to the "Lippert One Control" app - away from its original CURT app. The Lippert One Control app is not working with iOS. It is a known problem with BT, location, font size, screen brightness, and zoom. Currently, one has to restore the Display Settings on iPhone to the default status to make the app work. It gets stuck on the "Accept/Cancel" screen because of font/zoom settings. Though working with Lippert support, it's 2.20.24 and the app is only functional when these default settings are applied. The default settings get applied to the entire phone making my phone impossible to see, to read, to determine color. The font is tiny, it's not bright, I cannot zoom, so I'm not sure what's taking so long for Lippert developers to get updates rolled out. The forced update to the Lippert One Control app rolled out in late 2023 and it never worked. Reviews in App Store are 1.3 and issues are still compounding. The brake controller may work without the app but the settings you need may not be the presets. I could tell the controller was not how I set it up on CURT app, so I had to drive without a brake controller. Until App Store reviews indicate consistent excellent status as the CURT app did, without rendering your own utility worthless, I cannot recommend this innovative and wonderful product. It worked well under CURT but Lippert still hasn't figured out what is going on and did not think more broadly when developing. Great product if it worked!

by:

Simple and quick way to set up a vehicle for trailer brakes. Cost effective, too, as you can use it for multiple tow vehicles. Easy to pair, I use an older “obsolete” iPhone with Bluetooth instead of my everyday iPhone. Be careful, though, this one is a replacement for one that vanished while camper was in for service.

by:

As long as you follow the directions for hooking it up precisely, it works marvelously. Especially, if like us, no OEM brake controller was available for our Jeep Grand Cherokee.

I give it a low rating, however, because it is made very cheaply. Just from regular use (plugging it in and unplugging it), the unit cracked, and then after 1-2 more uses it completely fell apart. See the pictures.

I wanted to let you know that the controller does have a 1 year warranty and I have sent the warranty return instructions in a separate email to you.

by:

Works perfectly and no fooling around with wires! Worth every penny! AND, if you have multiple vehicles, you don't have to install a brake controller on all of them, just plug and go! I love it!!!!!

I'm having trouble with it on my small trailer locking up the brakes

Etrailer Expert

Thank you for reaching out. Have you been able to adjust the output and sensitivity on the controller? Lowering the settings can prevent the brakes from locking up.

by:

The manufacturer changed the App for this (installing the Curt App requests a different app be installed), the App in the videos is no longer valid.

Instead of the Curt app, it tells you to download an app from Lipert.

The app also requires setting up an account with Lipert. This is completely unnecessary, it's a bluetooth device, it does not require any internet access at all.

The app also asked for Location Services, again this is completely unnecessary, the app does not need to know where it is located to connect to a bluetooth device.

Companies need to stop trying to harvest every bit of data and sell it to the highest bidder.

I would return this device if I could, these types of egregious data scraping are getting out of hand.

by:

Fantastic / effortless! I drive a Volvo XC40 and needed the most minimal, non-intrusive brake controller I could find. All you need is the corresponding app, you pair this controller to the app via bluetooth, and configure it (just 2 settings for trailer brake output & sensitivity) and you're good to go. No need to rely on the app during driving at all, the brake controller stores the settings and just does its thing without you needing to look at the app or have it open. It's handy for testing the brakes, there is a button on the app where you can virtually press the brakes, so I stand by my trailer brakes, press the button, and test that I hear them engaging - super convenient since I do setup alone. Safety features ensure that if the phone loses connection, the brake controller just keeps working. Super happy with my purchase.

Product has still been perfect 1 year later. It just works every time, Ive used it for towing in a dozen+ trips and its been perfectly doing its job without issue.

2022 Ford Bronco

Picked up my teardrop in ABQ on 2/17/23, and the Echo was easy to mount and sync to my phone, and worked flawlessly the 175 mile trip home. I also got my longer 3-way curt ball mount from etrailer, and it is a beast and also worked perfectly!

by:

Works very good. I only tow a cargo trailer a few times per year and of course my new SUV DIDN'T have the built in trailer control like my last truck. I always hated the ad-hoc controllers (hit my knee every time) and because of staffing, the wait time to have my shop install one was about 3 months! So I bought this and have been very happy with it. I can't tell the different between and a regular brake controller. I believe it is using an accelerometer built inside it to determine when to apply braking. They did a damn good job programming it because it works well for me and I have had no problems. Just a heads up there is an app required you need to download (free) in order to set it up. Best part is, when I part with my SUV, this stays with me.

by:

Easy set up. Very smart brake controller. Brakes only as needed, and is very adjustable. I was skeptical about these proportional brake controllers (they use an accelerometer to sense how fast the towing vehicle is slowing down), but I am a believer now. Only thing to check: make sure your 7 pin connector’s auxiliary 12V is connected to at least a 20A fuse. The product says it needs to be connected to a 30A breaker, but I don’t think you’ll find many vehicles where that’s the case. 20A seems standard, and in my case more than enough. I am not sure is 20A May be a problem for those needing to brake two axles though. Worth looking into that before buying the controller.

Still enjoying using this wireless blue tooth controller. My only gripe is that the little rubber strap that comes with it is too flimsy and does not lock in place. I got rid of it.

by:
2010 Ford Expedition

It works ok but is not as proportional as I would like. My trailer 20 ft box empty is not bad at speed with a 40% and 1 proportional. Low speed 10 mph down jerks and will and even lock brakes but only at low speed.

I would prefer Ford factory control but it is not offed as an add on for my Expedition and I’m not happy about that.

by:

I used the wiring harness and 7/4 pin receiver from etrailer to wire my 2021 Toyota Highlander to use the Curt Echo. It worked flawlessly the first time. So far I haven’t needed to make adjustments from the original settings for my R-Pod 180 travel trailer. I do wish there were better instructions for initial set up.

by:

Initially wouldn’t connect to iPhone but after uninstall/reinstall of app it was fine. After literally traveling around the entire US I have to say it was a blessing with plug-and-play simplicity and total control over braking parameters. The phone lost Bluetooth connection a few times while traveling but the controller maintains the program so no big deal. For me it was nice to see the braking rate on the phone graphic. GREAT PRODUCT! 5 stars!

by:

Well I got this unit for my 40' motorcoach. Unfortunately it doesn't stay connected on my phone through the app inside the coach. But once you open the app and correctly set the app with your settings for the trailer or whatever you're towing it does a great job. So that's why it only got 4 stars. At least I didn't have to wire my whole coach, what a pain that would've been.

  • Does Curt Echo Brake Controller Still Work When Losing Cell Service
Yes. The Curt Echo, part # C51180, only needs to be connected your phone via Bluetooth which mountainous terrain won't interfere with. If your phone loses cell service it's not an issue because the only time you need a network connection for you phone to work with the Echo is when you're downloading the app. After that it's just connected directly to the Echo. Additionally, if something did cause the Bluetooth connection to go out the Echo still works. You won't be able to make any changes...

  • Can Cell Phone be Used as Dedicated Brake Controller With Curt Echo
That's an interesting question, and yes, you can use your older phone as a kind of dedicated brake controller with the Curt Echo Wireless Trailer Brake Controller # C51180. The phone will need to have the app downloaded so you'll need a data connection for that; afterwards the Echo connects to your phone with Bluetooth and data isn't necessary. So you can do this if you don't want to use your current phone with the Echo.

  • Troubleshooting Brake Controller that Applies Full Force When Brakes are Touched
That sounds like a short between the brake output circuit and one of the stop/turn circuits most likely on the trailer wiring due to cut or exposed wire. You can test this pretty easily by putting on one of the blinkers and seeing if the brakes apply with the blinker. If this is the case the issue would be solved by going over the trailer wiring between those two circuits and fixing the short as needed. I attached a help article on brake controller troubleshooting for you to check out as well.

  • Troubleshooting Curt Echo Wireless C51180 Having Too Strong Of Brake Output At Low Speeds
Sorry to hear about the issue you are having with your Curt Echo # C51180. I reached out to my contact at Curt and he had a few things to check, but mentioned the blue ring will always go all of the way around when the output setting you chose has been reached. The lower the setting the more likely the blue circle is to go all the way around the orange button on your phone as it has less output needed to get to the max. Now in regards to the braking being too strong at low speeds they...

  • Troubleshooting No Trailer Left Turn Signal with Curt Echo Plugged In
I am really sorry to hear about the issues you have been having finding the right brake controller for your 2019 Nissan Titan. I was not able to verify a confirmed plug-in harness for this truck on my end, either. Now as for the problem you're having with the camper's left turn signal, I don't believe this is something that's being caused by the Curt Echo Brake Controller # C51180, although this is easy enough to rule out. The only circuit on the 7-Way that the Echo actually uses is the...

  • Do Incoming Calls Interrupt Braking With Curt Echo
An incoming call will not affect the braking of the Curt Echo Brake Controller part # C51180 in the Kia Sorento. The Curt Echo will still be operating in the background. However, you will not be able to use your phone with a Bluetooth device like your vehicle's media system or a headset because the Curt Echo is paired via Bluetooth. If you take a phone call on the actual phone it won't cause any issues.

Yes the Curt Echo Wireless Trailer Brake Controller part # C51180 will work out very well for your factory 7-way trailer connector. It does not require any additional wiring to be installed in the vehicle which is one of it's biggest draws. I have linked the video my buddy David did on it for you to check out.

  • Recommended Brake Controller for 2007 Land Rover Range Rover
The best brake controller for your 2007 Land Rover Range Rover is the Curt Echo Mobile # C51180 since it doesn't require that you find the factory wiring in your vehicle; it will simply plug into the 7 way connector on the back of your vehicle and is controlled via your Android 4.4 (or higher) or iOS 8.0 (or higher) smart phone. This is a proportional brake controller that can be used on trailers with up to 2 axles and is the easiest to install brake controller we have to offer. I especially...

  • Does Blue Wire of 7-Way Need to be Connected to Something for Brake Controller to be Installed
Your 7-way did not also include a brake controller based on what you described. The blue wire you mentioned would have been wired up to the blue wire of the brake controller. Not every trailer that uses a 7-way also uses a brake controller which is why unless you requested to have one also installed it would have been left off when you had the 7-way installed. That said you could use the Curt Echo Mobile Brake Controller # C51180 you referenced pretty easily. Instead of the blue wire...

  • What Trailer Brake Controller Can I Use On My 2021 Audi SQ7
I spoke with a representative from Curt and they have not done any fit guide testing on the 2021 Audi SQ7. He also does not have a time table for when they will get the testing done and update their fit guide. However, he did say if you needed a trailer brake controller right away you can use the Curt Echo Wireless Trailer Brake Controller - 1 to 2 Axles - Proportional, part # C51180. I have included a product description link and a video review link below.

  • Troubleshooting No Power To Curt Echo When Connecting To 7-Way On a 2021 Audi Q7
Your 2021 Audi Q7 is going to have a smart wiring system. For the Curt Echo # C51180 to function properly and receive power you will need to connect your trailer 7-way to the Echo once you plug into the connector on your Audi. The computer in your Audi wants to see a full trailer connection before it will send power to the 12 volt circuit that powers the Echo. Your Audi will also have a trailer tow mode that should also be selected while you are towing.

  • Installing a Brake Controller on a 2015 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class
I have a solution for you, but unfortunately there are no plug-n-play style wiring adapters available for your 2015 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class, and it is usually fairly difficult to hardwire in a brake controller because you have to locate the stop light switch. What I recommend using is the Curt Echo # C51180. This is the best option for your Mercedes-Benz because it plugs right into the 7-Way wiring harness on your Mercedes-Benz. The Echo will activate your trailer's brakes in proportion...

  • Curt Echo Shows Braking Output With Turn Signal Applied
There is a possibility that power from either trailer stop/turn signal wire is blending over onto the brake output circuit but this is not very likely. However, it is also easy to test. What you will want to do is plug the Curt Echo Mobile Trailer Brake Controller part # C51180 into your vehicle with the trailer connector attached. Take a circuit tester and test the brake output wire just behind the trailer side trailer connector with either turn signal applied. If you get any power here...
