When you apply the brakes in your tow vehicle, deceleration occurs and momentum pushes your trailer toward the rear of your vehicle. With surge brake systems, the hydraulic actuator is triggered as your trailer moves forward, once your tow vehicle starts to slow down. When this happens, the actuator contracts, applying force to its master cylinder. This in turn supplies the necessary hydraulic pressure to engage your trailer's brakes.

Electric Reverse Lockout

The electric reverse lockout on this trailer brake actuator is automatically activated when you shift your tow vehicle into reverse. The solenoid wires into your trailer connector - which connects to your tow vehicle - so that it can detect when you are in reverse. When your vehicle is in reverse, the solenoid ensures that the hydraulic actuator does not activate your trailer's brakes, thus allowing you to back up your rig. To use the lockout feature, you must have a 5-pole flat, 6-way round, or 7-pole trailer connector.

Adjustable Channel Design

The adjustable channel on this trailer brake actuator allows for ultimate versatility. Mount almost any type of coupler (sold separately) - from a standard ball coupler to a lunette ring or clevis attachment - to fit your specific application. In addition, the 3 mounting positions on the channel let you adjust the height of the coupler. Just place the coupler so that it matches the height of the ball mount or other hitch attachment on your tow vehicle and you will be able to tow your trailer levelly.

Arrived in good condition, although box was in bad shape. Just got it and disassembled to fit up and weld on 1978 Airstream 31' Excello 500. Will have to reposition jack and possibly propane tank mounts. This trailer originally had a vacuum brake booster. will update when installed.

Very well make Surge Brake Hitch. Excellent quality. etrailer always has what you need at a good price. Excellent company.

by:

Heavy duty. Bigger and heavier in person. Feel confident with that trailer behind you. Worry about other things instead of your trailer.
Nice quality.

  • Can Electric Trailer Brakes be Used on Boat Trailers
It might seem weird, but you can actually use electric brakes on boat trailers without any issues. Some people will disconnect the trailer wiring when the boat is in the water but oddly enough it doesn't hurt anything. I attached a link to this page that has a guide for adding electric brakes for you to check out as well as a link for adding hydraulic brakes.

  • Surge Coupler for A-Frame Trailer with Disc Brakes
We do offer two disc brake surge coupler/actuators that will fit a standard 50-degree a-frame trailer. Both of these actuators come from Demco. Actuator # DM8105422 is primed red and intended for weld-on installation. It includes a breakaway and an electric reverse lockout feature that can be activated by the tow vehicle's reverse light circuit to allow you to back up the trailer with engaging the brakes. This unit has a tongue weight rating of 1250-lbs and a gross towing weight rating...

  • Troubleshooting Reverse Lock Out Solenoid of Surge Brake Trailer Not Functioning
The issue is definitely related to the wiring of the reverse lockout solenoid since you have replaced it and still have the same issue. First thing I would check is the pins of your trailer wiring connectors. Most likely there is some corrosion or dirt on the pins of the reverse light circuit which can be cleaned off with some sandpaper to improve the contact which will allow the circuit to have a more solid connection and activate the solenoid. Another thing I would try is using a probe...

  • Should I Install Drum or Disc Brake Actuator on Old Dump Truck Trailer Conversion
I would imagine it has to do with the brakes installed on the old dump truck. The Demco Hydraulic Brake Actuator for Drum Brakes # DM8102232 should be producing about 1,200 psi of hydraulic pressure while the Disc Brake Alternative # DM8105422 will be producing a higher 1,600 psi of hydraulic pressure. If your converted trailer has drum brakes then you'll likely need the drum brake actuator, but if it has disc brakes then the higher rating of the disc brake actuator should be the right...

  • Availability of 12.5k Rated A-Frame Surge Brake Coupler
Yes we have the Demco # DM8102222 for if you have drum brakes or the part # DM8105422 for if you have disc. These have channels on the front so you would need the ball coupler part # DM05557-97 to connect to a 2-5/16 inch hitch ball.

  • Best A-Frame Disc Brake Trailer Coupler Actuator
I do have an option for you but there is not a version of the Titan Zinc-Plated A-Frame Brake Actuator for trailers with disc brakes. The only a-frame trailer coupler we do offer for use with disc brakes is the Demco Hydraulic Brake Actuator w/ Lockout part # DM8105422 so this is what I recommend. In order to use this coupler with a 2-5/16" hitch ball you will also need the Demco Trailer Coupler part # DM15791-97. The Demco coupler will actually be an upgrade over the Titan coupler. It...

  • Parts Needed to Convert to 3,500 lb Over-The-Hub Disc Brakes
Thanks for the photos, and based on them we do have what you need, which are over-the-hub disc brakes. The only thing you will need to verify is that you have a 5 on 4-1/2" bolt pattern on your hub; it looks like you do but you'll want to be sure by measuring from the center of your hub's wheel stud hole to the farthest edge of the opposite stud. If that measures 4-1/2 inches you have a 5 on 4-1/2" bolt pattern. I have also added a link below to a printable bolt hole template. Assuming...
