Features to know about

Built for Serious Towing: 20,000 lbs GTW and 5,000 lbs Tongue Weight

This heavy-duty fifth-wheel hitch is rated to tow up to 20,000 lbs with a vertical load limit of 5,000 lbs. The sturdy steel construction, finished in durable carbide powder coat, gives you a solid connection that holds steady mile after mile. Whether you’re pulling a large fifth wheel or toy hauler, the strength and stability of this hitch mean you can head out with confidence every time.

Quiet, Controlled Ride: Fully Articulating Torsion Head

The fully articulating torsion head moves with your trailer to help suppress road shock and reduce towing noise. This design keeps the ride smooth and stable so you’re not fighting bounce or rattle on long drives. The built-in cushioning helps your trailer stay in line, making towing feel calm and predictable even on uneven roads.

Secure Grip and Peace of Mind: Interlocking Two-Piece Jaw Design

The rounded interlocking jaws wrap completely around the trailer’s king pin for 360-degree contact. That tight connection cuts down on movement compared to slide-bar models, giving you a quieter ride and a more secure hold. It’s a simple design that works hard to keep things locked in place and eliminate that loose feeling when you take off down the highway.

Know You’re Latched and Ready: Three-Point Color Indicator System

Before you roll out, a quick look at the color-coded lock indicator tells you exactly where your hitch stands—red means uncoupled, yellow means ready to couple, and green means it’s locked in for towing. The indicators are easy to see from the cab or beside the truck, so you always know your connection status without second-guessing.

Quick Removal When You Need the Bed: One-Pin Head Design with Lube Plate Included

When it’s time to clear out the bed, the fast 1-pin head removal lets one person take it off without a struggle. The included plastic lube plate helps the king pin glide smoothly into the jaws during hookup, saving wear and keeping things easy to operate. With adjustable height from 13" to 17", this setup makes it simple to dial in your trailer level for safe, steady towing every trip.

Video Transcript for Ultimate Overview of the Curt A20 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch

Today we're going to take a look at the Curt A20 dual-jaw fifth wheel trailer hitch with a 20,000 pound weight capacity. Now, this fifth wheel hitch will mount in your truck bed so that you can tow your fifth wheel trailer. It uses the interlocking two-jaw system right here, which provides a nice 360-degree jaw-to-kingpin contact, and because of that it'll give you less rattle, more security than your slide bar models. Also, on the front of each jaw, over here and over here, you can notice there's two built-in grease zerk fittings, which will give you easy lubrication of the jaws. This hitch does use a fully articulating torsion head for controlled coupling and a nice stable, quiet ride. It will self-align for easy hookup, and helps suppress road shock to reduce any bothersome towing noise. The handle right here is a lockable handle.

It's a very short-throw single-handle operation. The nice thing about it, also, it does self-reset to the ready-to-couple position after uncoupling. Now, when you put this together, when you mount the crossmember to the legs, there's three rows of holes on the crossmember, so it actually will give you a four inch hitch height adjustment. The hitch height would be measured from your truck bed to the top of the hitch head, and you want that to be as close as possible, so when you're towing your fifth wheel with your tow vehicle, you want those level. It gives you three choices, anywhere from thirteen inches of hitch height adjustment up to seventeen inches. One of the nice features on this is the three-point indicator system. It'll tell you what position the jaws are in.

What's nice about it is that it's color-coded. Let me just swing this around so you can be able to see. If you notice, right under the hitch head, right here, you'll notice right now it's showing solid green. That means the jaws are completely closed. If we had a kingpin in there, the green would mean you're ready to tow.

This color coding will tell you if the hitch is ready to uncouple, couple, or tow. What's nice about those colors and looking, if you're in the cab, the cab would be right here, you can turn around as you're hooking up or uncoupling and watch the color, and when it changes, it tells you the position of the jaws. Basically, the green, like it is now, the jaws are locked closed; it's safe to tow. If it goes to yellow, let me just unhook this and pull out the handle. You can see right now, because I opened the jaws, it's showing yellow. Yellow means the jaws are ready to couple.

It's safe to back in the truck to couple up to your fifth wheel. It if would show red there, that means the jaws are locked open, and it's safe to pull your truck away. When it's red, you do not want to couple. Also, this has a nice fast one-pin head removal, makes it very easy for one person to remove the hitch. Back here, there's a clip you can pull out, and then you can pull this large pin out, and that'll allow you to take the head out of the crossmember so you can take it apart in pieces, which makes it easy for one person to remove the hitch. Also included with this . Let me roll this around here. There we go. Included with this, I have laid out, comes with the plastic loop plate right here. This plastic loop plate will go onto your kingpin and lets the kingpin glide smoothly into the hitch during hookup. Also comes with, you can see, the pins and clips for attaching the legs to your base rails. This is a simple installation with base rails and an installation kit. Now, the base rails and the installation kit we do sell separately on our website. I would recommend to go to our website, use our fit guide, put in your year and model vehicle, and it'll show you the correct base rails and installation kit for your application. This fifth wheel hitch is compatible with B and W, Curt, Demco, Draw-Tite, Hidden Hitch, Husky, Reese, and Valley above-bed base rails. This is a sturdy steel construction with a durable carbide powder-coat finish. Again, the specs on this. The gross towing weight capacity is 20,000 pounds. The vertical load limit or pin weight capacity is 5,000 pounds. We had mentioned the hitch height adjustment from thirteen inches to seventeen inches. What I'm going to do now is, we already have the jaws open, ready to couple, showing yellow, so what I want to do is here's an example. This is what a kingpin would look like on your fifth wheel. When you go to hook up, your kingpin would slide in between the two jaws, just like this, and once you get it far enough, your jaws will completely wrap around the kingpin. You notice the handle automatically slides up. The holes line up, so you just take your pin and clip, drop your pin into the hole, clip it, and that'll lock the handle. Now, the hole is large enough, you could actually put a padlock on there if you wanted extra security. It does come with this attached pin and clip. With the handle locked, you look back here at the color, it's showing green. That means you're all ready to tow. Again, to uncouple, you just pull your pin out, open it back out, and go, be able to back right out. That should do it for the review on the Curt A20 dual-jaw fifth wheel trailer hitch with the 20,000 pound weight capacity.

I have towed with the Curt A20 for a few thousand miles. I really like this hitch. The visual hooked versus unkooked indicator is awesome. It operates flawlessly. I do get some chucking over bridge expansion joints. However, it seems like most people have this problem. On normal roads it pulls great.

Curt A20 still performing flawlessly.

Hitch came packed well even though the box looked banged up. Everything was still undamaged and in good usable condition, just minor scuffs. I think this unit will have more when I get done with it. Watched a you tube video from curt on installation and had little trouble installing the hitch following the enclosed guidelines. Everything lined up according to plan. I think the hardest part was getting access by the heat shield. Tough spot to work on but I had help from a younger, more adapt helper who was able to manage just fine. A creeper for underneath was super handy and a 6 foot ladder to climb in and out of the bed made it a whole lot easier. Really did not need to use a lift. Would have made it a bit harder to work in the bed. My truck is quite high which allowed nice working space underneath.
by:
Hitch slid into existing rails after a very minor adjustment. Took my son and I about 25 minutes to assemble, torgue bolts and adjust rails in the bed of my truck. we have used it twice already and camper did not bang and pop like it did on old worn out receiver.
The ordering process was also very smooth. Kelsey took the time to explain the differences in the hitches before I made my decision!
I Would recommend both etrailer and this hitch if you are looking to change out!
by:
From start to finish the experience was very enjoyable. The customer service team was amazing and everything happened just as promised.
The same hitch at my local trailer store cost much more.
Would definitely recommend etrailer to anyone.

Excellent hitch, took two of us 10 minutes, during a rain storm lol, to put together and install! As far as towing our Redwood 5th wheel it performed flawlessly, easy to hook up and the ride was super smooth and no noticeable bucking!
by:
Very nice piece!Arrived sooner than expected. I have the A16 version, that I used for a 10k Lbs 5th wheel and that handle very well but now I'll be towing a 16k tow hauler so I know this a20 will do just fine. And I love the locking jaw versions. I feel these are most secured in any type of towing.
by:
Love it. Easy to take apart and move! The instructions were very clear on how to assemble. I pull a 43ft camper and have yet to have any problems! Well worth the $$
by:
Install was easy and the hitch performs perfectly. I have ZERO complaints. Even a year later, it performs great.
by:
Overall the hitch seems to be good had a few scuffs and scratches but it is a fifth wheel hitch and nothing devastating couldn’t get the latch assembly out and I really didn’t want to start beating around on it. Talked to a friend who said that would get better after using it some. A little harder to deal with but fit the bed base plates perfectly in my 2022 F350 dually. Good to go get my toy hauler ??

Sorry to hear about the damage and difficulties, Jeff. The handle will get easier to actuate with use as they can be on the stiff side when new. I don't recommend beating it with anything as that will probably damage the mechanism. So don't do that. Are those B&W rails in your bed? And what do you carry in your toy hauler?

As good as new after a year and thousands of miles. Love it, well worth the price.

Seems like a good hitch, installed but haven't used it yet. The way the hitch is packaged is terrible. Even the bolt and bracket kit for the rails wasn't packaged very well. Heavy objects in a box flying around. Box was ripped open but luckily didn't lose any parts. Installed on a 2007 dodge 3500.

10,000 miles and a year later the hitch has been working fine.

by:
Hitch is fine but packaging it shipped in was all torn up on arrival. To the point that handle was bent.
by:
The hitch has been flawless.
To date I have asked customer service to explain how I can separate the upper section from the lower section after pulling the connection pin with no definitive response. I have have very similar models in the passed and they have come apart with ease. Not this Curt though. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Very nice product.....had some initial installation parts issues that etrailer quickly resolved....I've got 18K pounds on this hitch and all is well, including a few steep grade up and downs.....trailer rides nicely in hitch with virtually no chucking....hitch height just fits under the bed cover and I can remove the hitch
from the rails in two pieces by myself.... really satisfied....I'd recommend this product

Thank you guys

Overall we are very happy with the hitch. We had a learning curve and it took a while for the product to sort of break in but it has worked well for us. The reason for 4 stars vs. 5 is: We were very unhappy with the way it was shipped. It was damaged but not so we could not use it. The packaging was destroyed and the product was dented and had to be painted due to all the scrapes. It arrived pretty beat up. Recently the safety pin chain broke and will have to be replaced. Braided cable might be a better option. The chain given was pretty weak for the abuse that it has to take.
by:
Very good hitch, I'm pleased with durability and ease of use. I didn't give it 5 stars because of the base locking pins that are slightly smaller than the holes they fit in and make the trailer "clunk" when taking off or stopping.
by:
2003 Dodge Ram Pickup
The hitch is great . The only problem was shipping. When the order arrived the outer box was extremely beat-up. Upon opening, the inner box was so damaged it was not reconizable...the styrofoam was in pieces and the hitch paint was scratched-up. It was treated VERY badly in shipment...I took pictures and was going to forward to you but my phone crashed and that's when I learned my cloud back-up did not include my photos. I needed the hitch immediately for a trip, so I just installed it and chalked-it up as bad luck. With all that said, I owned Reese before but the Curt just seems more substantial
by:
I'm happy with the performance of the hitch. The color indicator is added piece of mind that I'm doing things right. It did come with a few minor scratches from shipping and a few scratches most likely came from the factory. Like most 5th wheels they're heavy, so you won't want to carry it far without a dolly. I'm sure the poor UPS guy got a work out. The 7 blade in the box, above bed rails, and hitch were in in 3.5 hrs, but I have a hoist, which helps but not needed to get things installed. I can't express how helpful the installation videos were.
by:
This Curt hitch A20 is by far the easiest to install and awesome to hookup and unhook. Money well spent!!!!

Hey Dennis! The # DM8552006 are only designed for the 1999-2004 F-250 and F-350. Are you looking for base rails with custom brackets for your F-150? If that is the case, I recommend the Curt Custom Fifth Wheel Installation Kit for Ford F150 # C16437-204. This includes the base rails along with the custom bracket kit.

I'll start by saying that we do not recommend that you install a fifth wheel hitch on a 2002 Ford F-150 with the 5-1/2 foot bed. You would have to use a Sidewinder pin box with a standard hitch, which moves the pivot point back 22 inches toward the tailgate; and even with the Sidewinder installed on your vehicle you will not get enough clearance between the truck cab and your fifth wheel when making a 90 degree turn. • Above The Bed Rail Kit For 2001 Ford F150
If you just need the rails I suggest going with the Curt rails. For your specific truck I recommend these: Curt Custom Fifth Wheel Installation Kit for Ford F150 and F250 - Carbide Finish # C16437-204. They are an ISR, industry standard rail, that most brands will fit into. If you do not already have a 7 way connector in the bed of your truck, I recommend the following one from Curt. Curt 5th Wheel/Gooseneck Custom Wiring Harness w/ 7-Pole Connector - 7' Long # C56070.

  • 5th Wheel Rail Kit for a Curt 5th Wheel Hitch in a 2001 Ford F-150 Short Bed
For your 2011 Ford F-150 with 6-1/2 foot bed you can use 5th wheel rail kit # C16437-204. The Curt E16 hitch # C16115 will fit but it is a fixed hitch. Short bed trucks require a slider hitch unless the trailer is very narrow or has a tapered front cap designed to be towed by a short bed truck. Otherwise the trailer can make contact with the truck cab when making tight turns. The slider version of the E16 hitch is # 16516.

  • Fifth Wheel Slider Hitch Recommendation for 2002 Ford F-150 Short Bed
Reese does not offer their Elite style of under-bed rails for your 2002 Ford F-150 so you wouldn't be able use the Elite slider hitch you mentioned in your truck. You'd need to use an above-bed style of slider hitch like the Curt E16 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch w/ S20 Slider # C95DR. So for a rail kit to fit your truck you'd then want the Curt rail kit part # C16437-204 which is a custom fit for your truck and will also fit your rail kit.

Yes the Curt Custom Fifth Wheel Installation Kit part # C16437-204 is a confirmed fit for your 2003 Ford F-150 with the 6.5' bed. It works great with most fifth wheel sliding hitches that use the industry standard bed rails like the Curt A16 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch w/ R16 Slider part # C16521. The use of a sliding hitch is recommended with the shorter bed to pervent the fifth wheel from making contact with the cab of your F-150. Most folks want to have a wiring connector in the bed of...

  • Recommended 5TH Wheel Hitch For a 2022 Ram 2500 With Ram Box Bed
With your 2022 Ram 2500 having the Ram Box storage in the bed you will need to use a fixed hitch with a pivoting pin box like the Sidewinder # RP34FR. You will not be able to use use the Pull Rite/Demco Autoslide type hitches as they will not clear the bed sides. The pivoting pin box changes the turning point from the 5th wheel hitch to the attachment point on the 5th wheel trailer. This prevents the chance of damage to your bed rails and allows you to make full jackknife turns without...

They are kind of hard to see but I attached a picture that points them out. Curt recommends high pressure grease like the part # L11465. If you need a grease gun we have part # L30200.

I spoke with my contact at Curt who said that the A20 5th Wheel Hitch # C16140 is compatible with the Trailair Rota-Flex 5th Wheel Pin Box without any additional components. He did say that they have heard of instances where the rubber pad on the Rota-Flex pops out of place which results in it prematurely wearing down the head unit of the A20 but since that problem is with the pin box you would have this same issue with any 5th wheel hitch. If you are replacing your pin box and this makes...

  • Can Head Unit From Curt Q20 Be Used On Curt A20 5th Wheel Hitch?
Hello Rick, thanks for reaching out. I know this isn't what you wanted to hear, but your best option here will be to get a whole new hitch. The Q20 hitch system has basically been discontinued and replaced with the A20 series hitches. The head units and bases are not interchangeable between the two hitches. I know what you mean about the handle and slider on the Curt hitches being tricky to operate. This is the case with all of their hitches. If you want something better, take a look at...

I have 2 options for you Simon to mount your Curt A20 5th Wheel Hitch # C16140 in your 2017 Ford F-350 with the factory puck system. The first and easiest is the Adapter Rails # C88KR which you found. This will mount into your 4 outer factory puck holes and gives you the same mounting points your Curt hitch fits into. I spoke to my contact at Curt about your Curt A20 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch part # C16140 and they informed me that the locking handle issue is likely a result of improper lubrication. For starters, I would take some brake parts cleaner and spay down the jaws and the locking handle to ride any debris. Once you have let the jaws and handle mechanism dry then you can take some LubriMatic White Lithium Grease part # L11354 and work it onto these components while moving them back and forth to...

  • Towing 19K Toy Hauler With 18K Rated 5th Wheel Hitch
According to my research, the 2007 Silverado 2500 Classic has a towing capacity that varies from about 10,100 to around 15,000 lbs depending on how the truck is equipped so you'll definitely be exceeding the towing capacity of the truck as well as that of an 18K capacity 5th wheel hitch. Does the 19K figure you stated for the weight of the toy hauler represent its GVWR or is that it's dry or weight? The dry weight would typically be quite a bit lower. I couldn't recommend towing in excess...

Yes, the Curt E-Series like part # C16115 fit the same base rails as the Curt A-Series like part # C16140 so you can switch between the two without issue. The old base rails will stay attached to the truck bed and you'd simply just swap out the hitch for one another.

For a 20,000 lb 5th wheel hitch, I recommend the Curt Q20 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch part # C16541 for long beds or part # C16140 for short beds. • Why Would Curt A20 Fifth Wheel Hitch Chuck with Travel Trailer
Hey Matt, that's frustrating to hear but my first question is what type of wedge are you using for the pin box and the A20? If it's a universal wedge that would be what I'd think the issue is. The custom fit wedge you'd need is the part # C16992. That should tighten up chucking quite a bit. Let me know what you have now for a wedge and we can go from there. Also if you see where the movement is that is causing the noise let me know.

  • Is it Normal for Curt A20 Fifth Wheel Hitch to Make Noise Starting/Stopping
Hey Doug, what you are describing is pretty normal and is referred to as "chucking". Some hitches have a little looser tolerances in the jaw design that can cause this and/or some trailer king pins are a little worn out which allows for more play as well. The A20 doesn't have a reputation for being noisy so I wouldn't suspect it being the problem but there isn't any type of adjustment on it's jaws.

  • Recommended 5th-Wheel Hitch that is Easily Removed on 2014 Ram 1500
Choosing the right 5th-Wheel Trailer Hitch for your 2014 Ram 1500 will depend first on the weight of the trailer you plan on towing. You will want to make sure the truck and hitch have weight capacities that exceed the trailer's loaded weight. Since your Ram 1500 has a short 5-1/2 foot bed, the safest way to tow a trailer is to use a stationary 5th-wheel hitch and replace the pin box on the trailer with a Sidewinder, if it does not have one already. The Sidewinder will be required to add...

Curt does offer a fifth wheel hitch that fits that rail kit directly though with the A20 part # C16034. The Curt Custom Fifth Wheel Installation Kit is a custom bolt-on fit with no cutting or drilling required into the frame. The articulink rear suspension on your 2017 Ram 2500 Power Wagon will not cause any issues with a set of airbags or a 5th wheel hitch because they all install in slightly different locations on the vehicle and do not counteract one another. For a set of airbags, I recommend using the Air Lift LoadLifter 5000 Air Helper Springs part # AL57289 because they do not require any drilling into the truck frame and they do not interfere with the brackets for a 5th wheel hitch. • Why Can't the Curt Rota-Flex Pin Boxes Be Used with the Curt Q-Series 5th Wheel Hitches
Hey Derek, thanks for reaching out! The Curt Rota-Flex pin boxes, like part # LC176440 you referenced, aren't compatible with the Curt Q-Series hitches because the pin box hitch plate moves and the Q-Series hitches use a spherical axial bearing which provides a smooth ride quality for standard pin boxes, but will work against the movement of the Rota-Flex pin boxes.
