Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Today we're going to review part number AM31951. This is a Kenda tire, size ST175/80R13. It's a radial trailer tire and it's mounted on a 13-inch Deckstar White Spoke Wheel. This wheel does have a white powder coat finish which will give a superior corrosion resistance. It's on the front of the wheel and also on the rear of the wheel. A few measurements we'll do on this wheel would be the diameter of the wheel, in this case it would be 13 inches if we measure it from inside to inside, it'd be 13 inches.

The width of this wheel is a 4-1/2 inches wide. This wheel has a bolt pattern of 5 bolts, 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern. And on a wheel with an odd number of lug bolts, like this one which is five, there is a couple of ways you can measure the bolt pattern. First way would be if we drew a circle through the center of all five of the lug holes and then measured the diameter of that circle. So in this case, if we measure from the center of this lug hole to the outer edge of that circle, it will be 4-1/2 inches.

So that will tell you this is a 5 on 4-1/2-inch wheel. The other way is if you could measure from the center of one lug hole to the center of the lug hole right next to it, so in this case if we do that, it would be 2-5/8 inches. And then what you would need to do would be to go to the product page for this part number and at the bottom of the product page it will list a chart which will show that if that measurement is a 2-5/8 it would relate to a bolt pattern of 5 on 4-1/2 inches. This wheel has a weight capacity of 1660 pounds at 65 psi. It does use a wheel bolt size of 1/2 inch by 20.

Another critical measurement would be the large hole in the center of the wheel which goes over the hub on your trailer. This will be the pilot hole diameter. So in this case when we measure that it would be 3.19 inches. Now we'll move onto the tire. The tire is a Loadstar, again size ST for special trailer 175/80R13.

And the R will designate that this is of radial construction. This tire is a load range C which means it is a 6-ply rated tire, does have a maximum load capacity of 1360 pounds at 50 psi. Give you one more measurement, it'll be the overall diameter and it would be 24 inches. And again, this tire is of radial construction which would mean the belts on the inside will run from one bead seat across to the other bead seat which would be a radius design. And the nice thing with the radial tire when you compare to a bias tire is because of the way it is constructed, the tread will lay flat on the ground for more ground contact that will improve traction, better stability. The other nice thing is a radial tire will usually run cooler when compared to a bias tire will help as far as tire wear. This tire and wheel combo come a with a limited 2-year warranty. And that should do it for part AM31951.
