The Nitrogen Advantage

Nitro Fill Logo

The NitroFill inflation process filters out oxygen to ensure that this tire-and-wheel assembly is filled with 95 to 99.9 percent pure nitrogen. Nitrogen-inflated tires maintain pressure better than tires inflated with standard air. This makes them ideal for RVs and trailers that are driven infrequently or sit in storage for long periods of time. Other benefits of consistent tire pressure are better fuel economy, improved braking and handling, decreased chance of tire failure, and longer tire life.

A tire inflated with standard air, which contains oxygen, is prone to fluctuations in pressure due to loss of air over time and ambient temperature changes. Nitrogen-inflated tires don't experience these fluctuations for a couple reasons. First, nitrogen molecules are larger than oxygen molecules, so they are less likely to permeate a rubber tire. Second, nitrogen is a dry gas, so it won't allow condensation to build inside the tire. A tire inflated with standard air may have moisture in it, which means it is more likely to be affected by ambient temperature.

In addition, the moisture that can collect in a tire inflated with standard air will contribute to corrosion of the wheel and deterioration of the rubber tire from the inside out. A nitrogen-inflated tire-and-wheel assembly is less likely to experience this type of decay. Less moisture in the tire also means reduced running temperatures.

If necessary, you can top off the tire with standard compressed air. But to maintain the benefits of nitrogen, the tire must be refilled with nitrogen.

Beveled Stud Holes

Beveled Stud Holes Front and Back

The stud holes on this steel wheel are beveled to ensure that the wheel stays tight against your trailer hub. This also eliminates the need to constantly retorque the lug nuts.

Westlake Radials

This radial ply tire from Westlake is constructed with double steel belts and double polyester cords for increased durability.

Westlake Standard Tread Close-Up

The standard tread on this tire has solid, continuous ribs, and there are very few sipes (or thin grooves) cut into the rubber. This tire is designed for use on trailers, so it doesn't require the level of traction that would be needed on a vehicle that is braking or steering.

Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Video Transcript for Westlake Tires and Wheels - Tire with Wheel - LHAX097 Review

Today we're going to take a look at the Westlake ST175 80R13 radial trailer tire in a load range C mounted on this 13 inch black modular trailer wheel with the 5 on 4 and a half in bolt pattern. Now this tire and wheel assembly's ideal for RV's, campers, and trailers. The wheel you can see is a modular style. When we say, "modular style," that's the one that has the round holes all the way around the wheel. It has a nice black E-coat finish on the front and the back of the wheel. The wheel is very sturdy and rust resistant. Now the tire that's mounted on to it, they do use a Westlake radial tire.

It's made of a high quality rubber, which is reinforced by layers of steel and polyester belts. This tire is great for highway use and tread design gives you excellent traction. They do use a nylon overlay to help prevent tread separation. This tire does have the tread wear indicators like you'll see on your passenger car tires. If you look on the shoulder every so often you'll see a TWI indication. If you look right where it says, "TWI," in the tread, grooves, you'll see a raised area, almost looks like a speed bump.

That tread wear indicator is at 2/32 tread depth so it happens when your tire wears down and it gives you a straight line all the way across. That means your tire's officially worn out at 2/32. Basically, as your tire's wearing on your trailer you could look right where the tread wear indicators are and it gives you a good visual indication of how the tires are wearing. Now this tire and wheel assembly is inflated with nitrogen. That's why they use the green valve caps on the tire stems. The nitrogen will help maintain tire pressure for longer periods than your standard air and it will help prolong the life of the tire and even the wheel.

The tire's a special trailer tire design. It'll couple the strength of a bias tire with the durability and stability of a radial tire. It is created specifically for trailers. It's not intended for use on any other vehicles. Now also with this tire and wheel assembly they do offer the complimentary 24 hour road side assistance program for 1 year from the manufacturer.

This tire and wheel assembly does meet the DOT, or Department of Transportation specification. A few specs on this starting with the wheel. The dimension, or diameter, is going to be 13 inches and that's always measured inside to inside. The width on just the wheel is 4 and a half inches. The bolt pattern on this wheel is a 5 on 4 and a half inch bolt pattern. If you ever wanted to measure that on a wheel like this that's an odd number of lugs, in this case 5, you just pick one of the holes, let's say this one, and then you'll measure across to either one of these holes. When you measure it, measure from the center of the starting hole to the furthest edge of the hole that you measure to. On this one if we measure it'd be 4 and a half inches, so the 5 lug 4 and a half inch bolt pattern. The wheel does use a wheel lug size of a half inch by 20. Weight capacity on just the wheel by itself is 1660 pounds and the pilot hole diameter, the large hole here in the center of the wheel, goes over the hub on your trailer, diameter of that opening is 3.19 inches. Tire size, which will be stamped on the sidewall is ST for special trailer, 175 80R13. The R designates that it's a radial tire. Section width on this is 7 inches. Overall diameter from the bottom to the top when it's inflated is 24 inches. This tire's a load range C, which means it's a 6 ply rated tire. It has a maximum load capacity of 1360 pounds at 50 psi. One last thing on your new trailer tires, they are starting to put a speed rating on the tire itself. A speed rating is always listed by a letter designation. To find that on here, if you look where the size is, right after it you'll see 2 numbers for the load index, and then the letter "L." An L will mean that it's a 75 mile per hour speed rating. That should do it for the review on the Westlake ST175 80R13 radial trailer tire in a load range C on this 13 inch black modular trailer wheel with the 5 on 4 and a half inch bolt pattern.

No problems on delivery. The tire was inflated to 46psi with a green cap, implying some sort of kryptonite or special air was used. Not sure if it's balanced, but high quality wheel. 748981

Looks good on the spare tire carrier and still holds air, matches the other wheels on my boat trailer. Have never driven on it. 497247

- LHAX097

Just installed these so treadlife is not known but they look good. Bigger than anticipated, huge compared to the 4.80/ 12 they replaced. Had to modify fenders and just hoping to have enough clearance. Installed on single jet ski trailer made by Comfab. 478723

Roughly 3,000 miles driven on these tires and wheels with no issues and no visible tread wear a great product in my opinion would recommend to anyone

Ask the Experts about this Westlake Trailer Tires and Wheels

  • Can Trailer Tires be Upgraded from ST145/R12 to ST175/80R13
Since the 21.3 inch diameter and 5.7 inch width of a ST145/R12 tire and wheel like the Kenda Karrier # AM31202 are the widest, in order to get larger and wider tires/wheels you need to upgrade to a ST175/80R13, which measure 24 inches in diameter and 7 inches wide. You can do this so long as the larger tire will still allow you to have at least 3" of clearance from the top of the tire to your fender and at least 1" of clearance between the inside of the tire and your trailer's frame rail. • Can a Radial Tire Fit on Dexstar Mini Mod Wheel AM20242
Yes, you can install radial tires on the Dexstar rim part # AM20242 that you referenced. For a radial tire that would fit this rim and work well we have the part # LHWL101. This size is ST175/80R13. Or for a similar wheel that comes with a radial tire installed already we have the part # LHAX097 that would work great. The tire has a higher speed rating than usual at 75 mph and has a 2 year roadside program too. The tire I mentioned before has the same ratings and roadside program.
