To determine if your specific model 2014 Volkswagen Gold turbo diesel can be flat towed you will need to consult the owners manual. If it can there are at least 5 items that you will need.
First you will need base plates for the Golf. Roadmaster base plates # 521235-1 will fit 2.0 liter TDI models. I have included a link to the installation instructions for you.
Next you will need a compatible tow bar. I recommend the Falcon 2, # RM-520. This is the most popular compatible tow bar and it features telescoping arms which makes hooking up much easier than fixed arm tow bars. I have linked a video review of the tow bar for you.
You will also need safety cables # RM-643. The coiled design of the cables helps to keep them off of the ground.
Next you will need a lighting kit. The easiest solution is going to be a magnetic kit, # RM-2120, which is what I recommend. But if you want a more permanent solution then a bulb and socket kit, # RM-155, can be used but you will have to drill holes into the backs of the tail light assemblies.
And finally, most states now require supplemental braking on the vehicle being flat towed. One of the easiest systems to set up and use is the Even Brake proportional system # RM-9400. It will apply the Golf brakes in proportion to how much the tow vehicle is braking. This is the easiest way to stop and it reduces wear and tear on both vehicles.
In order for the braking system to work properly you will also need a stop light switch kit # RM-751453 and a 12 volt outlet kit # RM-9332.
Be sure to consult your Golf owners manual for specific information on flat towing the vehicle. I have also included some helpful links to our series of help articles on flat towing for you.
