Question:
I need to purchase a new wiring harness for my Tacoma and a new wiring kit for my utility trailer. Thus I have a couple of questions: Item 118379 states that the stop/turn signals max is 2.1 amps and with the tail lights its 4 amps. I want to get the light kit TL5RK which states it pulls 2.5 amps for stop/turn, and 1 amp for tail lights. Are these correct statements pertaining to their amps? And if so, I interpret this to mean that I cannot put the two together since the light kit pulls more amps than the max allowed by the harness 2.4 vs 2.1. Am I interpreting correctly? If so, I do prefer the Draw-Tite product so do you carry another that will fit with the light kit that I want?

Expert Reply:
We offer two trailer wiring harnesses for your 2002 Toyota Tacoma, the Draw-Tite # 118379 and the Curt # C55379. Both harnesses are the plug-and-play type that will install in a similar manner at your Tacoma taillight assemblies as shown in the linked video.
Given your choice of trailer lighting kit # TL5RK I suggest you opt for the Curt harness since it offers higher current output capacity than the Draw-Tite. Curt # C55379 provides maximum output of 3 amps per stop/turn circuit and 7.5 amps per tail light circuit.
You will want to make certain that the white ground wire with ring terminal is tightly secured to a clean bare metal surface behind your tail light assembly. A solid ground connection is essential to normal operation and maximum output from the harness.
In case you run into any issues I have also linked articles on trailer wiring and troubleshooting 4-pole installations.
