Installation

This custom-fit T-connector plugs into your vehicle's wiring harness, which is located behind the driver's-side and passenger's-side tail lights. You will have to remove the tail light assemblies to access this harness.

Once installation is complete, the 4-way connector will be stowed beneath your vehicle, near the trailer hitch. A mounting bracket (sold separately) is recommended to keep the connector secure.

It is recommended that you use a small amount of grease on all electrical connections - the plugs on your automobile and the 4-pole connector itself - to help prevent corrosion.

Tail Light Converter with Surface-Mount Technology

A tail light converter is built into this T-connector. Because most trailers run on a two-wire system - wherein the brake and turn signals are carried on one wire - the separate brake and turn signals from your vehicle's three-wire system need to be combined so they are compatible with the wiring system of the trailer. This converter combines the brake and turn signal functions of your automobile so that they run on one wire to properly activate your trailer's tail lights. Note: This will not affect how the tail lights on your vehicle operate.

Curt builds each tail light converter using surface-mount technology (SMT). This method of construction involves soldering electronic components directly to the surface of a printed circuit board. SMT eliminates the need for leads, which are used in older through-hole technology. The result is a circuit board that is smaller yet provides more routing area and that offers superior performance, reliability and durability.

Curt SMT Circuit Boards

Circuit boards constructed using SMT have been shown to perform better under rough conditions with excessive vibration than those made using the through-hole method. And where would vibration be more likely to occur than in towing applications? Curt converters also produce less heat, leading to increased durability and longer life. In addition, lower levels of resistance ensure better performance, especially for parts that operate at higher frequencies.

Each Curt circuit board is made using high-quality components that are pieced together in the most technologically savvy fashion, leading to greater predictability and reliability in functioning.

Perfect fit harness plugs into existing wiring with no problems. I had to put the rubber plug cover in the sun to soften it enough to fit. Those of us with trucks can't hide the converter box in a trunk to keep it protected from rain like the instructions prefer. Oh well.

Hey Leonard, as long as it's not located in a place where it'll get submerged the converter box will handle rain just fine.

Wow, way too easy. Ispent more time cleaning the taillight housings than installing this harness.

This vehicle wiring harness is the way to go, just a couple connectors snapped in place at each tail light and route the wires under vehicle, then place 4 pole wire connector in a holding bracket and that's it, your ready to go, diy job takes about 30 minutes at the most, buy this product, you won't regret it.

Product was an exact fit for my 2000 Toyota Tacoma. Super easy install. I saved the black plastic flexible wire tubing from my old wiring harness which I think adds a lot of protection. I would recommend buying this type of tubing to use. Also purchased the 4 pole flat bracket to fit the connector which makes for a nice professional finish. It easily screwed into the bottom of the bumper-----just had to drill two 3/32 inch holes. See picture
Overall very satisfied.

I installed the receiver hitch today, alone. Not bad for an eighty year old!
The installation process wasn't bad after watching a video. I'm very impressed with the quality of the product. It is very robust!

Fast shipment!! Received hitch in a few days. instructions where right on and easy to use. Plus, online there was a video from etrailer on how to install the hitch. Hitch and wiring only took 2 hrs to install. Great product, great service will definitely order from them again! Thank you etrailer!

The harness was extremely easy to install. The inline plug and socket to the existing lights makes it so much more reliable and secure. The only wire to connect was the ground to the frame. I would highly recommend this product to anyone needing a trailer outlet added to their 90's Tacoma.

by:

Great product, plug and play was super helpful

by:
2002 toyota Tacoma

Took about an hour to install. Make sure to test with the vehicle engine running so processor is getting full power. Highly recommended unit for a first Gen Toyota Tacoma.

by:

Easy install (took maybe 30-45minutes) and works exactly as it should. The wires were all the perfect length with maybe 6” excess per line. Only time I had to pick up a tool other than a screwdriver was for unhooking the battery terminal and drilling the ground wire into place.

It's a great product, and was easy to install took about 30 minutes

This product is terrific. I found some weird wiring that someone did on the left rear light of my truck in the past. Apparently they were trying to get the trailer lights to work by adding direct battery wiring. I wasn't sure what to do so I decided to start by just removing all that extra stuff and installing this kit as per directions. I did that and boom!.... The the tailer lights worked perfectly first time out! I was very surprised... I was sure there would be problems. But there were not! It was just too easy!

Great produce. As you had told me about some vehicles, that some need help to work in using a wiring harness in lack of power from that vehicle. My 2002 Toyota Tacoma is one that needed help. When I called you back with my find,
you rushed a fix ( freely) to my need quickly for my truck that saved me from missing my hunting trip that I was leaving in less then a week. Great produce from a great company with great employees that care for each need of the public.
When [etrailer] was formed, obviously it was formed right from the top down, thinking about the person, the public.
GOD BLESS

The Curt T-Connector vehicle wiring harness arrived just a few days after placing my order. Everything I needed was included in the package. Installation was so easy even with removing my very old failed harness, installing the new one only took about 30 minutes. Connections were simple and no splicing! I would recommend etrailer to anyone.

After a year of use it still works perfectly.

Had a customer bring in his vehicle and wanted us to splice into his wiring and install his own after market towing lights..needless to say we declined because of the liability and cutting into a wiring harness is never a great idea. So I ordered this towing harness for the customer and it arrived at the shop within 2 days. The customer was impressed with the way it connected into his vehicles wiring without any cutting of wires. The customer was Amazed on how simple it was and was very happy on the install and of course how it worked..., another happy customer is always good and using this type of wiring kit is better and safer when dealing with a vehicles wiring.

by:

Well... The electronic controller on the unit I received was bad, giving intermittent connections for the brakes, blinkers and hazard blinkers. I should have called etrailer immediately, described the symptoms and they would have sent me a replacement immediately. Instead, I spent most of a week trying to track down where the bad connection might be.

Now that I have a properly functioning unit, it is wonderful and easy to install. No trying to figure out which wires to tap into.

I do have a suggestion that you test the unit before fully installing it. This is very quick and easy. You have to take the tail lights off or otherwise get access to the taillight plugs to install this unit. Before proceeding further, plug this unit into the wires coming to the taillights and plug the other end into the trailer. If it works, you have a good unit. Unplug the unit and proceed to install it underneath the vehicle. If it doesn't work, call etrailer, describe the symptoms and they will send a replacement.

2003 Toyota Tacoma

It was an easy plug in hookup to my 03 Tacoma. Only issue I had was I had to convert my trailer lights to L.E.D. from standard lights to make everything work properly. According to the technical advisor at etrailer, the converter from a 5 wire truck harness to the 4 wire used too much power to operate the standard lights.

  • Recommended 4-Way Connector for a 1996 Toyota Tacoma
Hey Jaime. It sounds like you've got a bad trailer connector on your Tacoma or something wrong with the wiring between your connector and your fuse box. A lose ground or corrosion on your connector would be the first place to look. Corrosion can build up behind the connectors where the wires attach. I would start at the connector and work your way towards the front of your truck. You'll want to make sure that the ground wire is attached to a clean bare metal surface on your truck. If...

Hi Andrew; the first thing I would do is double check the # C55379 connections behind your tail lights. Go ahead and unplug the connectors and then plug them back in to make sure they're fully seated. After that, I would test for power using a circuit tester # PTW2993. Start by testing the wires running into the converter box. Since your vehicle lights work I'm assuming you have power here but it is a good idea to double check. After that check the wires running out of the converter box...
