Installation

This custom-fit T-connector plugs into your vehicle's wiring harness, which is located behind the driver's-side and passenger's-side tail lights. You will have to remove the tail light assemblies to access this harness.

Once installation is complete, the 4-way connector will be stowed beneath your vehicle, near the trailer hitch. A mounting bracket (sold separately) is recommended to keep the connector secure.

It is recommended that you use a small amount of grease on all electrical connections - the plugs on your automobile and the 4-pole connector itself - to help prevent corrosion.

Tail Light Converter with Surface-Mount Technology

A tail light converter is built into this T-connector. Because most trailers run on a two-wire system - wherein the brake and turn signals are carried on one wire - the separate brake and turn signals from your vehicle's three-wire system need to be combined so they are compatible with the wiring system of the trailer. This converter combines the brake and turn signal functions of your automobile so that they run on one wire to properly activate your trailer's tail lights. Note: This will not affect how the tail lights on your vehicle operate.

Curt builds each tail light converter using surface-mount technology (SMT). This method of construction involves soldering electronic components directly to the surface of a printed circuit board. SMT eliminates the need for leads, which are used in older through-hole technology. The result is a circuit board that is smaller yet provides more routing area and that offers superior performance, reliability and durability.

Curt SMT Circuit Boards

Circuit boards constructed using SMT have been shown to perform better under rough conditions with excessive vibration than those made using the through-hole method. And where would vibration be more likely to occur than in towing applications? Curt converters also produce less heat, leading to increased durability and longer life. In addition, lower levels of resistance ensure better performance, especially for parts that operate at higher frequencies.

Each Curt circuit board is made using high-quality components that are pieced together in the most technologically savvy fashion, leading to greater predictability and reliability in functioning.

1989 Toyota Pickup

Excellent product. Fit and finish exactly as described. Installed in 15 minutes. On my '89 Toyota Pickup (2wd extended cab 22RE DLX trim) there was no existing ground on the frame to attach the ground wire ring terminal to, so I had to drill a small hole and use the provided self-tapping screw to attach the ground. The hole is very small (3/32"), I'm not concerned about it causing the frame to crack.

by:

Easy install (took maybe 30-45minutes) and works exactly as it should. The wires were all the perfect length with maybe 6” excess per line. Only time I had to pick up a tool other than a screwdriver was for unhooking the battery terminal and drilling the ground wire into place.

This kit is working with no issues. It was very easy to install. I installed it on a 1991 Toyota 4WD pickup. I`m very pleased with this purchase.

2000 Toyota Tacoma

Product was an exact fit for my 2000 Toyota Tacoma. Super easy install. I saved the black plastic flexible wire tubing from my old wiring harness which I think adds a lot of protection. I would recommend buying this type of tubing to use. Also purchased the 4 pole flat bracket to fit the connector which makes for a nice professional finish. It easily screwed into the bottom of the bumper-----just had to drill two 3/32 inch holes. See picture
Overall very satisfied.

2004 Toyota Tacoma

Good wiring solution for my old Toyota Tacoma. Installation was easier than expected.

2003 Toyota Tacoma

Fast shipment!! Received hitch in a few days. instructions where right on and easy to use. Plus, online there was a video from etrailer on how to install the hitch. Hitch and wiring only took 2 hrs to install. Great product, great service will definitely order from them again! Thank you etrailer!

by:

Looked ok looked like maybe a generic no wording on the molded converter. The double plug ends were not labled. Plenty of 4wire to the trailer end of the plug. We will see how it lasts.

by:
1993 Toyota Pickup

Fast shipping and super easy install! Etrailer is the bomb!

by:

This installation really was as simple as they say. I work meticulously and it took me just over an hour. It works perfectly. I’m so glad I can tow my utility trailer legally lit now! (The trailer, not me!). One comment on instructions. Might help to make it clear in step 2 that the connector clips need to come up from underneath the vehicle and through the opening in the quarter panels. I can imagine some folks just plugging in the connectors and having the wires laying out which would make it impossible to reinstall the taillights.

by:
2004 Toyota Tacoma

Harness installed as advertised. The unit was pretty much plug and play. Plenty of length available with the connector pigtails. The only modification required on my end was to cut the 4-pin connector off and hard wire the stripped ends to the 7-pin trailer pigtail. Everything worked perfectly!

Great produce. As you had told me about some vehicles, that some need help to work in using a wiring harness in lack of power from that vehicle. My 2002 Toyota Tacoma is one that needed help. When I called you back with my find,
you rushed a fix ( freely) to my need quickly for my truck that saved me from missing my hunting trip that I was leaving in less then a week. Great produce from a great company with great employees that care for each need of the public.
When [etrailer] was formed, obviously it was formed right from the top down, thinking about the person, the public.
GOD BLESS

2001 Toyota Tacoma

This product is terrific. I found some weird wiring that someone did on the left rear light of my truck in the past. Apparently they were trying to get the trailer lights to work by adding direct battery wiring. I wasn't sure what to do so I decided to start by just removing all that extra stuff and installing this kit as per directions. I did that and boom!.... The the tailer lights worked perfectly first time out! I was very surprised... I was sure there would be problems. But there were not! It was just too easy!

I Have never had to give my trailer lighting a second thought... Every time I check the lights they always work as they should

1995 Toyota Tacoma

The Curt T-Connector vehicle wiring harness arrived just a few days after placing my order. Everything I needed was included in the package. Installation was so easy even with removing my very old failed harness, installing the new one only took about 30 minutes. Connections were simple and no splicing! I would recommend etrailer to anyone.

After a year of use it still works perfectly.

Easy plug and play installation. Grounding to the frame is the only small challenge

by:

Easy to install and fixed my problem with existing truck wiring.

by:

Simple install.

by:

Had a customer bring in his vehicle and wanted us to splice into his wiring and install his own after market towing lights..needless to say we declined because of the liability and cutting into a wiring harness is never a great idea. So I ordered this towing harness for the customer and it arrived at the shop within 2 days. The customer was impressed with the way it connected into his vehicles wiring without any cutting of wires. The customer was Amazed on how simple it was and was very happy on the install and of course how it worked..., another happy customer is always good and using this type of wiring kit is better and safer when dealing with a vehicles wiring.

by:
2003 Toyota Tacoma

It was an easy plug in hookup to my 03 Tacoma. Only issue I had was I had to convert my trailer lights to L.E.D. from standard lights to make everything work properly. According to the technical advisor at etrailer, the converter from a 5 wire truck harness to the 4 wire used too much power to operate the standard lights.

Easy plug and play!!!

2002 Toyota Tacoma

Love this wiring harness !! I had been lookIng for a wiring harness at my local Napa but couldn’t find exactly what I wanted , then I came across this one at etrailer , so glad I got it ! I didn’t want to cut into my trucks tail light system and I didn’t have to with this harness . Installation was quick and easy , and looks like a pro did it !! I plugged it into my trailer and Bam ! Every light worked , brake , turn signal , and running lights !!

1992 Toyota Pickup

I am very glad that I ordered the Curt T Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness for my 1992 Toyota Pickup. It took about 16 minutes to install it as it was very simple. I just removed both taillight assemblies, unplug them and plugged in the Curt connector harness, ground the ground wire and plug my trailer to it and Boom, all my lights worked, Running lights Both turn signal lights, break lights, side marker lights and even my emergency flashers also worked. No splicing,or guessing at the wires. In my book this is a great product and it really made my day.

I installed the wiring harness and trailer hitch on my 2000 Toyota Tacoma without any problems and I have used it without any problems. I always check to make sure my trailer lights are working prior to moving my vehicle and I have not had any problems. I am very pleased.

  • Curt Wiring Harness # 55379 Compatibility with LED Bulb Replacements at Truck Tail Lights
Yes. The Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # C55379 for your 2004 Toyota Tacoma will work fine with your replacement LED bulbs on your truck and the 12V incandescent bulbs on your trailer. Because you have used the conversion LED bulbs, the power getting to the harness has not changed and will not impact the function of the trailer wiring harness.

  • Troubleshooting Blown Headlamp and Tail Light Bulbs on 2002 Toyota Tacoma After Harness Install
Since the truck is 17-years-old my first suspicion is that the bulb sockets/connectors for the left headlamp and/or left taillight could have corrosion that is causing a dead short that takes out the bulbs. There could also be worn insulation for that circuit's wiring that makes intermittent contact with a metal structure due to vibration when driving the truck. This would explain why the bulbs may work when the vehicle is still but fail when you drive. Normally the fuse for the headlamp/running...

I recommend going with the Tekonsha T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # 118379. The amount of draw will be determined by the lights on your trailer.
