Parts Needed to Convert 4-Way of 2019 Mazda CX-5 to 7-Way

Updated 05/26/2026 | Published 05/19/2026

Question:

I have a 2019 Mazda cx5 and have purchased the hitch and 4 way connector. I cannot figure out what else to buy, but I know I need the 7 way pin connector. I watched the videos and I don’t think I can do this myself. Are there products I can buy that are easier to install? If not, what can I buy to have a profession install it?

Hey Ian, so to convert the 4-way to a 7-way for just trailer lighting all you'd need is the part # 37185. Now if the trailer has brakes that you need to activate as well instead the adapter you'd need is the part # ETBC7L and then for the easiest to install and use brake controller the Curt Echo Mobile part # C51180 which just plugs into the 7-way and once synced to your smart phone is ready to be used. Does your trailer have brakes you are wanting to activate?

I used the 7-way (male) converter to 4-way (female) to hook my old boat trailer up which has a backup brake solenoid that stops it from backing up without the proper power to activate it. (It’s a surge braking system)

Hey Ian, if your having trouble connecting the 4-pin trailer wiring to your car, I would do a quick YouTube search to find more videos. On your vehicle, the connection is inside, in the cargo area behind one of the panels. I don't know which one. Once you have it connected, you should be able to route it outside through a grommet fairly easily. If you need a 7-pin and a brake controller, you will need to add wiring and things do get a bit more complicated. You can use an adaptor to convert the 4-pin to a 7-pin with no brake controller, and it will give you working lights but no brakes. Your vehicle has a max towing weight of 2000 pounds, so make sure you stick to that or you may damage your vehicle, or worse, cause a bad accident.
