Parts Needed to Convert 2000 Jayco Eagle 14SO From Hydraulic to Electric Brakes

Updated 09/26/2025 | Published 05/04/2025

Question:

I have a 2000 Jayce 14SO tandem axle pop up camper that had hydraulic surge brakes originally that I would like to convert to electric brakes. It has Dexter axles with 7 inch drums. Wondering what would work, and which coupler assembly to use.

Hey Jon! To add electric brakes to your 2000 Jayco Eagle 14SO you will need the following:

-etrailer Electric Trailer Brakes - 7" - Left/Right Hand Assemblies - 2,000 lbs # AKEBRK-2

-Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly - 2K Axles - 7" Diameter - 5 on 4-1/2 - L44649 # AKHD-545-2-2K

OR

-Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly - 2K Axles - 7" Diameter - 5 on 4-1/2 - L44643 # AKHD-545-2-1K

-Wiring Kit for Hydrastar Electric Over Hydraulic Actuators # HS381-9000

-10 Gauge Wire - Blue Primary - Per Foot # 10-1-1

-Bright Way Push-to-Test Trailer Breakaway Kit # 3802308

I'm assuming you have 2k axles but you will need to verify this information. I also do not know if your axles use # L44649 inner and outer or # L44643 inner and outer bearings. Again, you will have to verify this and choose the correct hub/drum assembly based on your bearings. The Hydrastar kit comes with everything you need to add a 7-way and then you will need some extra 10 gauge wire to run to the brake assemblies.

If you don't already have one, you will also need a brake controller like the Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty # RED52VR. If you don't want to worry about swapping out couplers you can drill into it and run some bolts through to permanently lock it out. If you want to replace it I need to know what kind of tongue you have and the ball size you need for the coupler to find a replacement. If you have any other questions feel free to reply below.

Hey Jon, did you have a chance to verify the axle and bearing details for your Jayco camper? I'm curious to know if the suggested electric brake setup worked out for you. Your experience could really help others looking to make similar conversions!
