Question:

Hi I am looking to purchase a tow hitch with plug and play wiring and also a trailer brake control. I have a 2021 vw tiguan SE r line black fwd . My vw is not equipped with trailer anything . I see there is two different styles. And the one that caught my eye was the ecoHitch class 3 . What is the advantage on getting that one, would it handle let’s say an 6x12 uhaul trailer and also I want to add trailer brake control I don’t want to rely on the vw brakes . So maybe a 7 pin connector. What would you suggest ? And yes that’s plug and play wiring. Thanks guys .

Hey Brandon! I can definitely help you get the parts you need. Starting with the hitch, the EcoHitch Stealth Trailer Hitch Receiver # 306-X7393 is a good choice. If it was the basic EcoHitch I would say don't bother. However, this has a removable receiver for a completely hidden design when you aren't towing which is the biggest advantage. The hitch won't have any issues with a U-Haul of that size.

To add a 7-way connector you need to start with a 4-way. The Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness # C56403 will plug into the connection points behind your tail lights. Since no aftermarket manufacturers make a plug and play 7-way the only option is the universal # ETBC7. This comes with the adapter, wiring, and everything else required for installation.

Are you only planning to tow the U-Haul or do you plan to tow other trailers with brakes in the future? A U-Haul typically has surge brakes so you can get by with just a 4-way for the lights. If you plan to tow trailers with electric brakes at some point then I recommend the Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty Brake Controller # RED52VR.

The main unit of the Liberty mounts behind the dash so it is out of sight. The only thing you will see in the cab of your Tiguan is the control knob which gives it a nice clean look that doesn't take up extra space. The knob controls the braking power and acts as the manual override. It comes with a universal wiring harness since you don't have a factory port so some splicing will be required.
