Can 2023 Ford Maverick Use Weight Distribution Hitch

Updated 01/12/2025 | Published 01/11/2025

Question:

I have some questions about sway bars /wdh being used with a unibody vehicle. Ive checked the information and a wdh was listed as not needed, however I wonder if it can be used, or a sway bar could be used. Ford Maverick 2023 AWD 2023 4k tow package. There was a comment from etrailer.com that said there may be some unibody vehicles that may can use them.

Hi Brandon; are you towing near the max capacity of your Maverick? The information you saw is correct. Most unibody vehicles do not allow the use of a weight distribution hitch (WDH) but there are some exceptions. The answer can typically be found in the owner's manual. I don't see anything specifically listed in the manual online saying it can't be used but I recommend double checking yours to be sure. It might also be a good idea to double check with the dealer.

Assuming you find the same thing, it will be safe to use a WDH like the Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution System w/ 4-Point Sway Control # EQ37040ET. This is designed for tongue weight up to 400 lbs and has a gross towing weight of 4,000 lbs which is in-line with the capabilities of your truck. The # ALL643216 will also be required for hitch ball installation.

Robin, Yes I will be under by 500 max. The Maverick works well under these conditions but want to minimize road movement due to wind/semis, though I realize there is no way to eliminate it. I checked with a Ford representative but they could not find any info either way. I will contact my local Ford and possibly the equalizer manufacturer.

@BrandonL it is also worth mentioning that the aftermarket hitches for the 2023 Maverick do have a weight distribution rating. Typically when they do that means the vehicle is also capable of handling a WDH.
