Video Transcript for Checking Out the 2" Hitch Ball

Today were going to take a look at the Curt 2-inch hitch ball, part number 40038. This hitch ball is 2 inches in diameter. It has a shank diameter of 1 inch, and a shank length of 2 inches. The wrench flats, as you can see here and here, are 1 5/8 of an inch apart. This item has a weight capacity of 12,000 pounds. It features fine threads for more holding strength.

It meets US V5 specifications and it is tested for safety. Now were going to bring in our ball mount and our trailer hitch demonstrator to show you how this would be installed. You would just slide the shank into the ball hole, place the washer, the washer and the nut do come with this item, and then finger tighten that, and once youve got that as tight as you can get it by finger tightening, you would get your wrench and tighten it the remainder of the way so you can use it with your trailer coupler and attach your trailer. That should do it for our Curt 2-inch hitch ball, part number 40038.

Beautiful chrome finish

by:

I know the finish won’t last but I was hoping I’d get a little longer out of it. It just seems like it aged very quickly and I even greased it to save it a bit although you’re not supposed to for general trailer safety. Still works though… don’t know what else you could ask. If you buy one, but from etrailer. No better site on the internet

We do recommend greasing the hitch ball to help disconnecting the coupler and to help protect rust. Use with the trailer coupler is going cause scratches which will eventually lead to rust. I recommend using grease part # 58117 with the ball.

Recieved the 3 hitch balls as promised. Needed the different sizes for different applications. Was able to get a good selection from etrailer and filled all my needs. Fair price and great product.

Product has been working great with no issues. Have enjoyed etrailer with ease of shopping and great delivery.

Exactly what I needed for the job. The 1" diameter x 2-1/4" long shank fit my ball mount perfectly, and the 12,000 tow capacity gives me plenty of reserve for peace of mind while towing.

Bought this heavy duty ball for extra security towing a 7000 GVWR dovetail. It fits the hitch and receiver insert perfectly and looks new after several 100 mile tows.

Great advice when I called for technical question about trailer balls -- answered by a live human who knew what they were talking about. This Hitchball has served us well over 9,000 miles of towing our Casita.

This trailer ball is well made. It stillfunctions as it should over another 1000 miles

I benefited greatly from the information at etrailer.com when outfitting my new Honda Pilot with a trailer hitch, wire harness, hitch, and ball.
Everything was high quality, the video instructions for installation were perfect.
I saved just over $1000 compared to what the new car dealer would have charged me to install the same items.

Youre a great company at etrailer.com George. Super website. The Curt branded products I bought from you are great after one year.

by:

Seems like a quality piece that was made by someone who cared. The finish was even and consistant. The threads were smooth as silk without the slightest bind as the nut was threaded up the shank by hand. If it holds up in use (resists corrosion) it will be just that much better. The 12,000 lb load capacity should handle the 1,650 lb camper I'll be pulling :-)

by:

Well made!

by:

I received the hitch and ball today! Fast shipping and looks great too!

by:

Great product

by:

One of the excellent hitch balls. Threads are finely ground and the required 260LB of torque was attainable (other hitch balls are difficult to torque due to less than perfect threads).

Great feedback! Thanks Don!

by:

Great service and product just like all the reviews say. Thanks a lot got the mount the ball and the lock arrived fast and fit perfect. I think they will work great.

by:

Took me about three hours. The Hitch was easy(About an hour including getting the tools ready). Fit perfectly! A Little Harder installing it by myself from the garage floor but, it can be done! Cutting the plastic and re-installing it took some time. Over all very happy with the hitch. Will recommend to others!!

by:

What to say about a hitch ball? It went on the mount easily and quickly. All parts and instructions were included, packaged well, and in perfect condition. Delivery was fast. Price was excellent and the customer services was even better! Thanks to Paula S. And etrailer for another great experience.

by:

Works as advertised. As long as you have the tools, easy to assemble onto the equalizer hitch.

by:

I received this hitch the next day during the vivid-19 pandemic. It was very easy to install.

2020 Subaru Outback
Pull the small rear panel off the bumper, remove 6 bolts and slip the hitch in between the bumper bar and the frame, tighten the new bolts in (not the stock bolts) and put everything back together. The reason there is a open hole on the hitch is because you cannot remove the bumper bar without removing the whole back end which would be a royal pain.

The brake wiring connector is right on the rear part of the spare tire compartment on the passenger side. It was hard to find but it just all snapped together.

Awesome product, awesome service!!

by:

Super impressed with the service and timeliness of your organization. Found y’all randomly on google and you are super legit. Helpful website, helpful recs, customer reviews. Customer service great too. Forgot part of my order (wiring harness) and it was overnighted, arrived on time. Everything on point. Keep it up.

The hitch itself was easy enough to install. Had to really use some PBlaster on the rear most holes and ended up needing an impact to get the job done. Beware kinda hard with just hand tools if the receiving holes are rusty,

by:

Thank you for your wide choice of products and your speedy delivery..

I neeed to pull a trailer with my 2019 GMC Yukon. I found Etrailer.com and followed the instructions on determining the drop of the hitch, the instructions were spot on. I hooked up my trailer to my Yukon today, all was level and worked perfectly.

I had driven around to Napa, Lowe’s, Home Depot and Walmart, and nobody had the 9” drop hitch I needed. Came back to Etrailer, bought the 2” ball and pin, and the Curt 9” drop hitch. I received the items quickly.

Great website,

Thanks,

Craig

by:

The ball is very nice, with two down sides. The 12,000 pound 2” ball has a 1” shank but the 12,000 pound hitch has a 1 1/4” hole, I looked on your site and even emailed asking for a spacer, but could not find one and received no answer to my email. I had to go to straight Curt’s site to find what I needed.

  • Recommended Weight Distribution System For R-Pod With 315 Lb Tongue Weight
When choosing a weight distribution system you wan't to find a system that is rated properly for your loaded tongue weight. You want the loaded tongue weight to fall in the center of the range that the weight distribution system spring bars are rated for. The Curt systems that you have mentioned part # C17499, part # C17500 and part # C17501 are all overrated for your tongue weight if it's 315 lbs loaded. Although the Curt systems are really great options there is not a system rated low...

  • Recommended Brake Controller and Weight Distribution Hitch for 2025 Kia Telluride S
Hey David! For a brake controller I recommend the Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty # RED24FR. This brake controller, is simple, reliable, and has an OEM look once installed. Since you have the tow package you can use the # C77BR along with the # 331-TPH-019 for a plug and play installation. When you say a sway bar and leveler I'm assuming you're referring to a weight distribution hitch (WDH). To choose the right hitch we need the tongue weight of your setup, which is typically 10-15% of your loaded...

The Curt hitch # 14001 is also a fit for '97 F-250 HD's that have step bumpers such as the Westin (I've attached a photo which shows the hitch on a truck with a step bumper) and will work for you so long as you have the larger 37-3/4" frame and not a 34" frame. Hey Patrick! I wasn't able to find definitive specs for your 2021 Casita Spirit Deluxe but it looks like the Fastway e2 Weight Distribution System # FA92-00-0450 is the best option. This hitch will do a great job keeping you level while cutting down on sway. Fastway is made by Equal-i-zer who is known for their high quality systems. The tongue weight of your trailer appears to be pretty low, almost certainly under the 450 lb limit of this system. However, it wouldn't hurt to measure your...

This will level you out, and for your 330 lb loaded tongue weight, you do have the correct Fastway system: - Fastway e2 Weight Distribution w/ 2-Point Sway Control # FA92-00-0450 The # FA92-00-0450 will correct the "V" and ensure your Jayco is level, and even though you mentioned you didn't have sway on your last trip,...

Having a longer ball mount like this will not reduce the capacity of your hitch at all. This will give you a length of 13-1/4 inches from the center of the ball to the hitch pin hole. For a compatible hitch ball the shank needs to be 1 inch diameter for this mount. I recommend the 2 inch ball # 40038 or...

The 5" rise shown in the photo is specifically for the system's head, but the overall height once the ball is installed would be 6" above the center of your receiver. Ideally a hitched trailer will be level to the ground.
