Pro Tip: Before you invest in a weight distribution hitch, make sure your cargo is evenly loaded in your trailer to keep the weight balanced. If you still have a hard time even after balancing your tongue weight, a weight distribution hitch should help.

L-Brackets vs. Add-On Friction Sway Bars

  • L-brackets that hold spring bars in place provide a tried-and-true method of sway control
    • Provides weight distribution and sway control in one system
    • Ensures steady towing, but can be noisy
  • Friction sway bars can be added to a standard weight distribution hitch to force your trailer back in line
    • Has to be removed at times (e.g. in the rain or when you're backing up), but its adjustable tension is a plus
    • Doesn't work with surge-type actuators

A close-up image shows weight distribution L-brackets

If you've got a moderate amount of sway behind you when you tow, and you want to save a few hundred bucks on getting a more premium option like an Equalizer or the B&W Continuum - which you know would be overkill for your application anyway - the Fastway e2 might be the middle of the road option you're after. It creates a rigid system of steel bars and L-brackets that rub together to create friction, which prevents your trailer from getting off track behind your tow vehicle. And it uses friction to force your trailer back in line if a strong crosswind or passing truck is a bit too much for the rigid hold to handle on its own.

A close-up image shows where the spring bar grinds on the steel bracket

Because the steel-on-steel friction of the bars and L-brackets is noisy, don't be alarmed if you hear some banging, creaking, and grinding. It's just the system working to correct sway.

Fun Fact: Steel-on-steel friction is what locomotives use to keep multi-ton railcars from swaying.

Adjusting the Head Tilt

  • Adding washers adds tension, but it's not a case of "the more the merrier"
  • Stacking washers can be a pain, but you only need to do it once, or if your tongue weight changes

A close-up image of the Reese Pro Round Bar hitch head shows the rivet and washers during installation

To adjust the tilt, simply slide washers onto the spacer rivet and insert it into the head assembly. Once the spacer is in place, tighten the shank bolts to secure the head to the shank. To check if your truck and trailer are level, you'll need to hookup and release your tongue jack. Repeating this step means adding more washers if the rear of your truck is sagging, or removing washers if too much weight has been distributed to your tow vehicle's front axle.

While the washer-stacking method allows you to fine-tune the setup at the time of installation, it's going to require some patience. It can be time consuming because, if you don't get everything right the first time (which, you probably won't), you'll have to take the head unit apart to adjust the washers. You might have to raise or lower the L-brackets too to get the tension just right, and that's a bit of a pain also. Not to mention that you might have to repeat this process if your tongue weight changes or if you swap out your tow vehicle.

Pro Tip: For a step-by-step guide on how to fully install the e2, check out our videos at the top of this page. Our installers even have some advice to offer on measuring your vehicle's squat.

Why Use a Weight Distribution Hitch?

Diagram showing weight distribution on a truck and towing a camper

  • Prevents uneven tire wear on your vehicle and trailer
  • Keeps the rear of your tow vehicle from sagging
  • Lets you tow to the max capacity of your trailer hitch
  • Stops your headlights from pointing up at the sky
  • Gives you control over steering your rig

Selecting the Right Weight Distribution System

  • Think "Goldilocks"
    • If you go for overbuilt, you'll have a rigid ride
    • If it's not strong enough, it's virtually useless
  • Let your tongue weight be your guide

Your tongue weight is the first thing you need to know when figuring out which weight distribution system you need. Most people think that if they get the highest-rated system possible, it'll be smooth sailing. But actually, this will create a rigid ride and a bouncing trailer. On the other hand, if the system isn't strong enough, it won't be able to distribute the weight properly, making it virtually useless.

Once you know your trailer's tongue weight, add it to the weight of the cargo behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle. Then just choose a weight distribution system rated for that combined tongue weight.

  • Recommended Weight Distribution Hitch for 2022 Keystone Springdale Mini 1750RD
Hey Michelle! There are definitely a lot of different weight distribution hitch (WDH) options out there. The most important thing is to make sure it is properly rated for the tongue weight of your setup. Looking at the specs for the 2022 Keystone Springdale Mini 1750RD it has a dry (unloaded) tongue weight of 520 lbs and a GVWR of 4,400 lbs. Tongue weight is typically 10-15% of the loaded trailer weight so at the high end, fully loaded, you're going to be around 660 lbs. For occasional,...

  • Recommended Weight Distribution System for 2018 Keystone Summerland 1750RD
The most important thing to consider when picking out a weight distribution system is the total tongue weight of your setup. This number includes the loaded tongue weight of the trailer (as if it's ready for a trip) along with any added cargo weight you might have loaded behind the rear axle of your F-250. Ideally this number falls comfortably within the operating range of the system you choose. Based on my research your 2018 Keystone Summerland 1750RD Trailer does indeed have an empty...

Sorry for the confusion on the details for the Tekonsha OEM Replacement Vehicle Wiring Harness # 22117 for your 2023 Toyota Tacoma. Since it can be used as a replacement for the OEM tapping into that connector is easier on those vehicles. Since you do not have the connector on your Tacoma you can simply use a Test Light # PTW2993 to find the correct wire on your brake switch which is on the brake pedal mount. Then you will be able to connect a controller like the Prodigy P3 # 90195. I personally...

Hello Dan, Wow, that is a really nice camper, Congrats! I’m going to go ahead and say the dealer messed that up. Camper dealers are great at selling campers, but unfortunately, that’s often where their expertise ends. When choosing the right Weight Distribution Hitch, it’s most important to match it as closely as possible to your trailer's tongue weight, rather than the overall trailer weight. Tongue weight typically falls between 10–15% of the total trailer weight. So, let’s say you’re...

  • What is the Difference Between Trunnion and Round Bar Weight Distribution Systems
The round or trunnion bars refers to the end of the spring bars. Round bars are typically designed for lighter applications, are a bit harder to install and are usually priced lower than trunnion bars. Trunnion bars are typically designed to be used with heavier weight applications, and easier to install than round bars. Trunnion bars typically offer more ground clearance as well. I attached an FAQ article on weight distribution for you to check out.

  • Weight Distribution Recommendation for 2026 Jayco Feather 19MRK
Hey Ray, while there certainly is a lot of appeal to the Andersen WD systems like the part # AN88VR what we have found is that if the tongue weight is more than a few hundred lbs they just don't work as well as the traditional systems that use spring bars instead. So if you wanted something simpler that would work a lot better I would go with a Fastway part # FA92-00-0800 instead.

Since your 2021 Ford Explorer ST has a 560lb tongue weight rating I recommend the Fastway e2 Weight Distribution w/ 2-Point Sway Control - Trunnion - 8,000 lbs GTW, 800 lbs TW # FA92-00-0800 which works with tongue weights between 400-800lbs. The Fastway systems are very high quality for the cost, and the built in two point sway control does a great job of keeping your trailer going straight down the highway. The # FA92-00-0800 does not include a hitch ball so you will also need 2" hitch...

I recommend the Fastway e2 Weight Distribution # FA92-00-0800 for your 2022/2023 Coleman 17B travel trailer. This hitch is rated for a tongue weight of 400-800lbs and a maximum trailer weight of 8,000lbs. With a dry tongue weight of 385lbs by the time they add a 40-50lb battery and the 20lbs of propane you are already up to 450lbs before you add any gear to your trailer. • Can You Use A Curt Shank With A Fastway Weight Distribution System?
Hi Jim! Fastway weight distribution shanks follow an industry standard 1-1/4" vertical hole spacing that Curt also follows (as do most, though not all, weight distribution manufacturers). So if, for example, you have a Fastway e2 Weight Distribution System # FA92-00-0800 that has a max drop of 2-3/4" and need more than that, you could swap the shank out for something like the 10" long Curt Weight Distribution Shank # 17120 that offers 5-3/4" of drop. This has the needed drop you are looking for, has plenty of tongue and towing weight capacity, and will work perfectly with your Fastway e2 system (Fastway bolt spacing on the head and shank is 1-1/4" on center and so is this Curt shank). • Weight Distribution Hitch for 2020 Tacoma Towing 2025 Coleman 17B
Hey Mark! I'm assuming you're talking about a weight distribution hitch (WDH) to keep you level and help reduce any sway. You want to choose a WDH based on the tongue weight of your loaded setup. It looks like your 2025 Coleman 17B has a dry tongue weight of 398 lbs and a GVWR of 3,990 lbs. Tongue weight is typically 10-15% so at the high end you're looking at 598 lbs of potential tongue weight. The total tongue weight is the loaded trailer tongue weight plus any cargo weight behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle. Based on it's length and weight, I think you are wise to consider a weight distribution system with sway control as I believe sway will be an issue and the weight distribution anti-sway systems are far better than the friction bars. With a lightweight trailer with a 21 foot 5 inch length preventing sway is just as important as correcting sway. With a weight...
