Updated 10/29/2024 | Published 10/07/2024

Question:

Im considering a Blue Ox Avail tow bar and a Demco Stay-IN-Play Duo Braking System. We can I get these items installed on my 2022 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk?

Hey Tim,

Those are both great choices for getting your Cherokee flat tow-ready, however you'll also need a few more components to complete your setup. If you go with the Blue Ox Avail Tow Bar # BX7420 then you'll want to go with the Blue Ox Baseplate # BX1143 to avoid having to purchase any additional adapters.

The Demco Stay-IN-Play Duo # SM99251 is one of my most recommended braking systems but is designed for hydrualic braking systems. If your motorhome has air brakes you would want to go with Demco's Air Force One # SM99243 instead. The Stay-IN-Play Duo has an indicator light that will need to tap into the brake light switch in your Cherokee. Since the wiring for this switch isn't useable you'll need to install a stop light switch kit # RM-751471 for the light to get the braking signal.

You'll also need a way to transfer your motorhome's light signals back to the Cherokee to remain street legal. For this I recommend the Roadmaster Diode 7-Wire to 6-Wire Flexo-Coil Wiring Kit # RM-15267. If you have ParkSense proximity sensors on your Cherokee then you'll need to switch to the Roadmaster Smart Diode 7-Wire to 6-Wire Wiring Kit for Variable Voltage LED Tail Lights # RM63MR instead.

As for installation you can either call our customer service department at (800) 298-8924 or use our installer locator (linked below) to setup an installation appointment.

Hello Kevin, Thank you for your detailed response. Yes, I would be using the Blue Ox Baseplate # BX1143 to go with the Blue Ox Avail. I would purchase the lock set (to protect against any shenanigans). We just purchased the Cherokee specifically for our toad. I went out and looked, I do see the sensors on the front and rear facias, so I assume those are for the park sense. So I understand I will need the Roadmaster Smart Diode 7-Wire to 6-Wire Wiring Kit for Variable Voltage LED Tail Lights # RM63MR to handle the lighting signals. I also like the idea of running a charging line back to keep the toad battery charged. Will I need a dedicated wire to accommodate the charging? Our coach is also new, we fly out tomorrow to pick it up and drive it back home. It has hydraulic brakes so the brake choice Is still undecided between the Demco Stay-IN-Play Duo # SM99251 and the Roadmaster Invisi Brake. I understand the Demco kit actually uses a vacuum pump to supply vacuum to the Cherokees brake booster to assist the braking. Does the ROadmaster kit use a vacuum pump as well? I also like the idea of the wireless kit that is in the coach to verify braking in the toad. As for the installation choices here in Michigan goes, I don't have any warm fuzzys. I think I would actually do it myself before using any of them, although I'd rather not. The top choice has 18 successful installations, the second has 2 and so does the 3rd. The rest have not installed any of these systems. So, 22 installations state wide! I would even consider making a trip out to MO and have ya'll do this set up for us. How would I get a quote? Will I always have access to this email thread? I see you put all the vids instructions in here for my reference. Thank you!

@TimS To lock your tow bar to your baseplate you can use lock kit # BX88359. For the charge line kit you'd want to run a charge line wire # RM-156-25 to the accessory pin (center) of the 6-way socket from the # RM63MR you'll mount on the Cherokee. Both the Demco Stay-IN-Play Duo # SM99251 and Roadmaster InvisiBrake # RM-8700 have air cylinders that activate the pulley to depress the brake pedal and would require tapping into the vacuum line to replenish the air in the cylinder. The InvisiBrake main unit has to live inside the vehicle, whereas the Stay-IN-Play main unit can be mounted in the engine compartment so I typically recommend the Stay-IN-Play over the InvisiBrake. If you're wanting a monitor for inside the motorhome instead of just the light dangling from the rearview mirror then you can go with the # DM86VR instead. This will have a little monitor to show you when the brakes are being applied. It does require a 12v cigarette style outlet for power. If you don't have an open one in your motorhome you can install the # RM-9332. You can give us a call to setup an installation if you're willing to make the journey out here. Our customer service line is (800) 298-8924. This page will be available until the parts are no longer in production so you'll be able to come back and rewatch the videos any time or can go directly to the product page for whatever part you're wanting to install to see the installation videos we have for it.

@KevinC Hi Kevin, I Gigi to ask about steering wobble in the Cherokee toad. Is this still an issue in the 2022 model?

Hello Kevin, You recommended the Blue Ox Baseplate # BX1143 to be used with the Blue Ox Avail tow bar. Would there be any issues using the Curt Custom Base Plate Kit - Removable Arms Part Number: C98FR instead? I see it is currently $100 less that the blue ox base plate. Thank you Tim

@TimS The Curt Custom Base Plate Kit # C98FR would work in place of the Blue Ox # BX1143. Blue Ox and Curt are tied together so most of their components will be interchangeable. The # C98FR would work for both the Cherokee and the Avail # BX7420, but it won't include the little 6-pole socket mount that the # BX1143 comes with. Most of the time you can still find a spot to mount the 6-pole socket to or can use a no-drill mount like part # 18140 (short) or # 18136 (long) to strap it in and secure it.
