Installing 7-Way And Using Curt Echo Bluetooth On A 2024 Toyota Highlander

Updated 01/27/2026 | Published 08/22/2024

Question:

My Highlander has their tow package installed with the 4 way flat socket but my boat trailer has a 7 way plug. I need to convert the highlander socket to a 7 way and Kit ETBC7L looks like the best option since I do have a Curt Echo. My question is which colored wire is going to connect to the reverse lights so it locks out the brake solenoid on the boat trailer surge actuator? As a note I do have hydraulic disc brakes on the trailer. I also tow a small travel trailer at times which is why I need the Curt Echo. Thank you.

Hello Scott. The # ETBC7L kit is exactly what you need to upgrade your 4-flat to a 7-way and use the Curt Echo Controller. Since you have a boat trailer with a reverse lockout, you will need to locate the reverse light circuit on your vehicle. I do not have a way to tell you what color wire this will be, so the best way to find it will be to go in behind the tail light housing with a wire tester like part # PTW2993 and poke around until you find the reverse light circuit.

Hey Scott, were you able to find the reverse light wire on your Highlander using the circuit tester? Knowing how that connection worked with your boat trailer’s lockout could really help others doing the same upgrade.
