CURT Accessories and Parts - 17200

  • Weight Distribution Hitch
  • Sway Control Parts
  • CURT

Friction-style sway control system uses a telescoping bar with friction pads to fight trailer sway. Adjustable tension lets you set the right amount of resistance for your setup. Attaches to your trailer and weight distribution system or ball mount.

Features:

  • Friction-style sway control effectively fights trailer sway after it begins
    • Reduces side-to-side movement caused by winds, passing traffic, curving roads, or sudden maneuvers
  • Bar unit houses the sway control mechanism
    • Interior arm telescopes in and out as your trailer moves
    • Friction pads rub against each other to create resistance
  • Adjustable tension lets you set the perfect amount of control and resistance
    • Tension-adjustment screw easily turns in 1/4" increments to fine-tune tension
    • Built-in lever lets you disengage the system to completely release tension
  • Trailer-mounted ball lets you connect the bar unit to your trailer frame
    • May be mounted to either side of your trailer
    • Bolt-on installation with included self-tapping screws
  • 1-1/4" Hitch ball mounts on weight distribution system head to provide attachment point for sway control unit
    • Included adapter bracket can be welded to system head if there is no ball mount platform
  • Easy to remove - simply unclip the bar unit from each attachment ball using the included safety clips
  • 1-Year limited warranty

Note: Not for use on trailers with surge brakes. It is recommended that you remove this sway control unit before backing up/reversing and before towing in slippery conditions such as on wet, icy, gravel, or snow-covered roads.

When installing this sway control system, follow the included instructions and measure 24" straight back from the center of the coupler along the frame of the trailer to determine the location of the spacer plate and trailer-mounted attachment ball. To achieve proper alignment, the spacer plate may not be necessary in every application.

Curt Sway Control on Trailer Frame

One friction-style sway control can be used for trailers with up to 6,000-lb GTW. If your trailer's GTW is between 6,000 lbs and 10,000 lbs, you will need 2 sway-control units, 1 on either side of the trailer. You will also want to use 2 units if your trailer is 26' or longer.

Bought this not realizing my trailers frame isnt large enough for the mounting bracket supplied. My frame is 3 on edge, while the bracket is the same. That would put the holes and self taping screws uncomfortably close to if not through the edge of the frame. Am going to try to fashion some clamping mechanism to hold the bracket on. Worst case, it slip and I dont have sway control, but thats the situation Im in now anyway. This is on a 3500 lb. 6x8 utility trailer.

Rather than trying to fabricate new mounts, the ball plate can be welded on. A certified welder can complete the task and you will have the ball solidly mounted without risking the trailer frame and losing the sway control bar. The only downside of course, is that it won' be easy to remove if you decide you don't want the ball on the frame any more.

by:

Bought the sway control to help with the swaying on the highway. Took 15 minutes to install. Instructions that came with the bar were horrible. I had to follow instructions I found on you tube. Seems to work well. Time will tell.

I have and will continue to purchase Curt products. Well designed, reasonably priced. Instruction clear and direct, tutorial video excellent.
Customer service, packaging and shipping from etrailer is consistently spot on!

Sway control system on my trailer

by:

I'm hopeful this item performs as described and attested to by others. I'm using it without WDS and have a welder to 'glue' the tab to my existing ball hitch. Of note -The screw holes on the Spacer Plate and Trailer Mounted Attachment Ball do not align correctly in any of the four possible positions. This is sloppy workmanship and grossly over-tolerant quality assurance. As is, two screws would go in 'clean,' with the two plates square and flush. The other two would feed extremely cock-eyed and crooked. I imagine the screws would fail trying to fully seat them. I suspect any failure ratings the manufacturer has established are seriously compromised. My welder has a drill press; he'll align the good holes and ream the others. I like etrailer. I'm sure they'd replace this. My choice for the DIY.

This product made a huge difference in the sway problem I had with my travel trailer. Large trucks and/or cross winds were very scary. I would not recommend towing a large trailer without sway control.

Still works great! I wouldnt tow travel trailer without it. Great value for the money.

by:

The sway control kit I ordered went on the receiver of my travel trailer easily and fits well. I tested the turn radius to see how sharp of a turn it would make without "hitting" and it performed perfectly. I haven't had the chance to take it on the road yet but don't anticipate any problems.

Im so glad I ordered the sway control kit. Ive used it several times when pulling my travel trailer and it has made all the difference.

Simple effective, well made. These are noisy on turns, similar to most friction sway control devices.

After about 2000 miles, still working well and noisy

I towed my trailer across country using this system and it worked great.

took the sway right out of my custom tag along trailer!

This is my first time purchasing from etrailer and I have to say the experience couldn't have been better. I purchased this sway bar and other items for my new tow vehicle. After trying to piece together everything I needed for towing on a couple of other websites, and not having much luck, I went to etrailer. I was able to find everything I needed, very detailed product information, easy to navigate website, quick shipping, GREAT communication from customer service, and a price that was equal to or better than the other websites. Hands down a happy etrailer customer!

No problem with the sway bar, BUT the Curt ball mount with sway bar mount looks like it has twisted. I only pull a Casita travel trailer 3500lbs behind my half ton pickup and havent put any unusual stress on it. Kind of disappointed...

If it has twisted then I would advise discontinuing using it. As called out in the instructions if this sway control bar or any of the components come into contact with the trailer while in a jack knife position it is recommended to remove the sway control bar while backing up.

by:

Received my anti-sway bar to add to my weight distribution hitch in less than a week. Fastest service I’ve ever had. Installed it and it works great! I could only go 57 mph before and now can keep up with everyone else on the freeway! etrailer is a great place to get anything trailer related. Have always had great service and will buy from them again. 5 stars

Works like a dream! Easy to use and install. I would recommend this to anyone looking for one.

Added this sway bar as a second one for my ToyHauler. With all the weight in the back of the trailer I needed a second. Since this brand was currently on my trailer and also on a second trailer I went with the tried and true. With the second sway bar I can pull my ToyHauler at 80 MPH next to tractor trailers and not get any after sway, it pulls straight. I highly recommend this sway bar, it only took me 30 minutes to install, most of that time was getting the measurements correct.

I am using this with the sway bar on my weight distribution hitch. Being a toy Hauler most of my weight is in the back, I have no problems towing no sway, no bounce very satisfied

by:

The sway bar works well. The retaining clip sometimes fall out of the tow vehicle end which could be a problem. I use 2 clips at that end.

by:

This is a replacement for one i didn't hook up and left it on the trunk of the trailer and never found it after I got home....lol
This one was a direct replacement for my 06 model and it works great.
As usual etrailer had what I needed and at a good price!

This sway control package is just what we needed! After towing our 3300 lb camper home with my wifes Jeep Cherokee, WITHOUT an anti-sway bar, I said I wasn't towing the camper anywhere until we had this installed. We drove in 20-30 mph crosswinds the entire 4+ hour drive back. With this installed, we hardly notice it. Now, you can't get rid of the wind itself, but you certainly don't have to worry about the trailer starting to move around on it's own - this is great for stabilizing everything.

Easy to install - just used the template they include with it, and then just drilled some holes through the frame of the camper and installed the hitch, hooked up and we were ready to go. We only use Curt products for our vehicles, utility trailer, and camper - nothing compares in my opinion.

Curt Weight distribution hitch assembly including dual Curt 17200 sway control bars for our heavy 30 foot RV. Purchased through Etrailer Corp. the information from Etrailer was fantastic on which hitch assembly was best for my application, the hitch, bars, sway arms were delivered exactly on time with no scratches or damage. My light weight 2010 pick pulled well and was level and handled winds and passing semi trucks in the wind a pleasure! Unfortunately I don't have pictures to show because I have recently bought a new F-350 and a new 40' -5th wheel trailer and from Etrailer purchased a Demco 18K Hijacker Auto Slide 5th wheel Hitch that works fantastically.
Thank you Etrailer for best prices and service!

by:

Best towing device I have bought except electric brake controller. Total game changer for pulling my single axle 17 foot Whitewater Retro trailer. Some effort to drill holes in frame, but just indicative of how strong the metal is on the tongue, just be sure to use good drill bits. Driven in 50 mph crosswinds and no waggle! This should be standard equipment for every trailer. eTrailer has great prices and super fast delivery, always happy with my purchase experiences with them. Only improvement to device would be some kind of way to secure it to the tongue when not in use, it drops down perpendicular to ground and occasionally creates a problem with lowering trailer on to trailer ball or when leveling at campground. I just loop one of the security chains around it after unhitching and it is up and out of the way.

by:

Unit works as intended. The problem i had with these sway control devices is that there is no instructions on how tightly you have to clamp them down to get the desired results. It took lots of trial and error to find the correct amount of sway control for my application. And part of the problem was a video i saw on youtube where a man tightened them down too far and it pulled the small ball off of the a-frame on his trailer. If i could afforded it, I wish I would have bought a newer style WD hitch with built in sway control instead of these slides.

by:

Works as advertised. Fits right on to Curt weight distribution hitch. Quality materials and a fair price.

by:

Great product. Installation instructions were clear and easy to follow. Everything pictured was in the package. I paired mine with the Curt ball mount receiver w/sway control tab 2" hitch item ID D320. Products work perfectly together to stop the sway. I would highly recommend this system to anyone looking for sway control.

by:

It is a little difficult to rate this sway control bar because it is either doing a great job, or because we never really needed it. We are towing a 2600 pound Scamp trailer with a Hyundai Santa Fe. We have never detected significant sway even during the rare times we forget to tighten it. However I like having this product installed just for "insurance" and piece of mind; particularly when we hit the occasional large pool of water on the road and I feel us start to hydroplane a little.

It was easy to install and easy to use.

by:

Very well made but I have not gotten installed yet

Product works fine no issues

by:

Product came sealed from the factory in a box sealed at etrailer. Upon opening the Curt box, discovered the hardware (8 self-taping screws) were missing. Called Curt costomer service and the hardware was shipped out the next day. Product itself is well engineered and of top quality. Etrailer was great as usual and Mark was very helpful in making my purchase. Great company with great prices and products.

by:

The "anti-sway bar" as I call it works as advertised. I've used this product for several decades on several applications including both the towed, and towing vehicles. It can make the difference in your comfort level on windy days. A note of caution: on some applications you'll need to remove it before backing up or you run the risk of breaking the ball.

  • Recommendations for 2014 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited Towing a 5x8 Hiker Highway Deluxe Trailer
Trailer Brakes are not required on most trailers under 3,000 lbs unless otherwise stated by the local authorities. This should not be an issue with safety behind your 2014 Subaru Outback, but you can add them if desired.
