I would be happy to help you set up your 2014 Chevy Equinox for flat towing. You will need a set of base plates, a tow bar, safety cables, tow bar wiring, a supplemental braking system, a high low adapter, and a few other parts for power and fuses to make sure everything works together properly. I have listed each part below along with an explanation. I have also attached all of the installation instructions and linked installation videos when available.
Tow Bar, Safety Chains, and Wiring - Roadmaster Nighthawk All Terrain Tow Bar w/ LED Lights item # RM-676. This tow bar comes with the safety cables needed as well as the wiring to control the lights on your Equinox. It has LED lights to make it easy to see in the dark.
Base Plate Kit - Roadmaster EZ5 Base Plates item # RM-523160-5. These have removable arms and the connections are really easy and quick to attach or disconnect as needed. When you are not towing the arms are completely removable and the front of your Equinox will look normal.
Wiring Harness - Hopkins Custom Tail Light Wiring Kit for Towed Vehicles item # HM56108. This wiring harness will plug into to the factory wiring harness located behind the tail light assemblies without cutting or splicing. Then you run the wire to the front of your Equinox and connect it to the 6-way trailer connector that came with your tow bar. This video is especially important because it will show you where to run the wire to avoid it being damage but hot or moving parts.
Supplemental Braking System - Demco SMI Stay-IN-Play DUO Supplemental Braking System item # SM99251. This system is permanently installed in your Equinox and out of the way. This will engage your Equinox's brakes when you press the pedal in your RV.
You will also need to install the Roadmaster Stop Light Switch Kit - Chevrolet Equinox item # RM-751439. This kit will let you know inside your RV when the brakes are being engaged in your Equinox. It will prevent any damaged caused by improper braking.
To keep your battery charged will you are headed to your destination you will want the 12V charge line kit item # RM-156-25.
When flat towing your Equinox fuse(s) must be pulled to protect your vehicle electronics according to your owners manual. If you have a 4 cylinder model, leave fuse #32 intact and pull the ABS fuse instead (Note: some models may label ABS fuse as #15 or #16). Instead of going through this process each time you tow, I recommend installing a fuse bypass switch to make your vehicle ready to flat tow with the flip of a switch. If you choose to use the bypass switch, 4-cylinder models will require fuse bypass item # RM-76517, while V6 models will need to use item # RM76511.
High Low Adapter - The tow bar needs to be within 3" of level. If you measure the height of the inside top of the hitch receiver tube on your RV, and the height difference is more than 3 inches above/below the base plate tab height, you'll need a high/low adapter. I have linked a FAQ article that explains all this in more detail along with our selection of adapters.
