Will Hands-Free Liftgate Feature on 2022 Honda Pilot Still Work After Trailer Hitch is Installed

Question:

Would installing a trailer hitch on my 2021 Honda Pilot prevent the hands free liftgate opening feature from working? I've heard conflicting information. Thanks!

Typically, a hitch will prevent the sensors used by the hands free liftgate system from picking up movement directly in the center, but will still pick up movement to one side or the other. We've received varied reports saying that some of the hitches aren't compatible with the system at all, unless the sensor relocation bracket is purchased from Honda.

However, we have received confirmation from some of our customers that the etrailer # e98840 will allow the sensors to the right and left of the receiver tube to operate without the relocation bracket kit. Keep in mind that like the rest of the hitches available for your vehicle, the hitch fits models with a spare tire mounted on an 18 inch wheel. If the wheel is larger, the spare tire will no longer fit with the spare tire in place.

If you'll be towing with the hitch, you'll also need a trailer wiring harness like # 118760 for a 4-pole connector or # 118286 for a 7-way. For a ball mount, use # 2753 and # 19260 for a 1-7/8 inch or # 63845 for a 2 inch trailer ball.

I've linked to some install videos that you'll likely find helpful.

Is this the same for a 2023-2025 Pilot?

@ManuelD The 2023-2025 are of a different generation. We don't have definitive word on whether or not the hitch completely prevents the sensors from working. In most cases, you can wave your foot to the right or left of the receiver tube and a little further back and the sensors will pick up the movement and open the rear hatch. In vehicles where the sensors don't pick up movement after the hitch is installed, check with your Honda dealer to see if a sensor relocation bracket is available (one was available for the previous generation.)
