Replacement Leaf Spring for Worn Out 26 Inch Long Leaf Springs

Updated 09/25/2020 | Published 09/24/2020

Question:

I have a travel trailer that has 4,400 lb axels and my leaf springs are flatlining out and measure 26inch eye to eye. Do you think the actual measurement should be 25-1/4inch new, also they are a 4 leaf and could I go up to a 5,000 lb spring? Thanks

Since leaf springs flatten out as they wear, the best way to determine their actual center eye to center eye length is to put the trailer up on jack stands so the axle(s) hang freely, then measure them.

This being said, there's every chance that the actual length of your springs is 25-1/4. You could indeed go with 5K spring like the # e28SR you'd looked at, but keep in mind that increasing the spring capacity WILL NOT increase the load bearing capacity of your trailer. You'll still be limited by the capacity of the lowest rated component, be it the tires, bearing set, hubs or the structure of the trailer itself.

Also, the number of leaves in a spring pack doesn't necessarily have a bearing on the capacity of the spring. The thickness and composition of the individual leaves is the important factor.

I've linked to a product description video for the # SP-218275 5K leaf spring.
