What does the spaninch mean on a locking hitch pin? Is it the outside with of the receiver? Thanks.

The span of a locking hitch pin like the Blue Ox # BX8858 means the amount of space that can fit between the two walls of the hitch receiver- so yes, basically the distance from the outside wall of one side of the receiver to the other. We have noticed that certain Toyota factory hitches have a thicker walls on their receivers that measure 2-7/8" instead of just under 2-3/4" so if you've got a Toyota truck with a factory receiver you would need to use a locking hitch pin like the # BX88212 that has a 4-3/8" span.
