Can a 5.30-12 Trailer Tire Replace a 4.80/4.00-8 Tire

Updated 07/03/2020 | Published 07/02/2020

Question:

Can I replace a 4.80/4.00 - 8 with a 5.3 X 12, 4 lug? I am trying to get a higher speed rating and want to go to Item # AM30780 to get to speed rating M.

The Kenda 5.30-12 Bias Trailer Tire with 12" White Wheel part # AM30780 measures 22" diameter x 5.6" wide. Therefore, it will be about 5.9" larger in diameter and .9" wider in width. If you have this much extra space on top of the recommended 3" top and 1" inside clearance then they will fit and work well. However, the # AM30780 only has a speed rating of 65 mph and not the 81 mph that you are looking for.

If the speed rating is a priority, then you could go with a tire separate from a wheel. For a tire, we have the Taskmaster 5.30R12 Radial Trailer Tire - Load Range C Item # TT53012C. This tire has an M speed rating which is 81 mph and includes a 2 year warranty. There are many styles and colors of 12 inch wheels available. You can choose one based on your preferences. A popular choice is the Dexstar Steel Spoke Trailer Wheel - 12" x 4" Rim - 4 on 4 - White Powder Coat Item # AM20122. Once your tires and wheels arrive, you will just need to have them mounted at a local shop. This inconvenience should be worth the higher speed rating.
