Durable 205/75R14 Tires To Help Prevent Blowouts
Updated 06/19/2018 | Published 06/15/2018 >
Question:
I have a 5600 lb boat on a loadmaster trailer with two axles with p P 205/75R14 tires on the trailer with 1500 lb load limit. They are 4 ply tires . Not knowing anything about tires I never dreamed they would have put such cheap tires on such a fine trailer. After 4-5 blowouts, a young man told me dont be so cheap and get some descent tires and wheels and my problem would go away. What tires do you recommend ???

There are several reputable trailer tire manufacturers out there, but one of my favorite brands is Kenda because they are one of the few companies who have their own testing facility right here in the United States, Ohio to be exact.
For your Loadmaster boat trailer, I would stick with the same tire size so we don't run into any clearance issues with the frame or fender and I would make sure you use "ST" tires like the Castle Rock ST205/75R14 Radial Tire w/ 14" Condor Aluminum Wheel - 5 on 4-1/2 - LR C - Gunmetal # LH84VR if you want the tire and wheel combo.
The "P" portion of your current tires stands for passenger car tire. Tires made for trailers are "ST" to designate special trailer tires. ST Tires are designed with stronger sidewalls to better handle vertical loads such as a boat and trailer and this is likely why you've experienced so may blowouts.
Also, it seems like your current tires are pretty close to the overall weight of your boat and trailer. The tire I recommended above is a 6 ply tire rated at 1,760 lbs at 60 PSI and it should do a much better job of holding up to the weight of your setup. They have a maximum speed rating of 75 MPH which exceeds most trailer tires out there and the only speed rating that we have available in this size as a tire and wheel combo..
Finally, I recommend replacing all of your tires at the same time using tires with different sizes or load ratings can negatively impact the wear on the other tires.
