Video Transcript for Wheel Stud Installation on a Boat Trailer

Today on This Old Boat Trailer we are going to repair one of the lug bolts in the hub. We are going to replace the wheel stud by using part number 25-53. The first thing we need to do is clean out the threads and we are going to be using a wire brush to do that with and that is part number 814092. Once we have everything cleaned out we will install the new wheel stud. We will use some thread locker to help keep it from coming back out and that is going to be part number LT37643. 00:28

Then we are going to take two regular lug nuts, you can use these off of the existing studs if you want and we will run these two together. Hold one nut in place and then draw the other nut onto it. Lock the two together and it will just run the two nuts together and kind of jam them and then we will take the assembly and we will just thread it in. There is a little ring in the middle of it and run that down until the ring seats into the hub. You want to tighten it down as you would any other wheel bolt or lug nut and once you have it ran down we will simply back off this nut. We have got our wheel stud repaired and we can put the wheel back on. Then we are going to top it off with a new chrome lug nut and that is going to be part number 12CLN. That is it, that will finish our installation of our wheel stud part number 25-53 on This Boat Trailer.

I was very pleased with the price and the quality of this lug nut.
It dresses up the trailer as well as protecting the stud threads
from rust. I would recommend this item from etrailer to anyone
looking for this lug nut.

  • Recommended Replacement Wheels for 5 on 5 Bolt Pattern
Thank you for the photo of your old wheel. That is extremely helpful in this case.To answer your main question, the measurement of the bolt pattern is going to be the most important factor in replacing the wheels on your trailer. The hub bore dimension won't be an important consideration since most wheels now are lug centric-meaning that they're centered and supported by the lug studs on your wheel. With that being said, it looks like you have an old Dexstar 17-384 wheel that has a 5...

  • Should 205/75-15 Bias Trailer Tires be Replaced With Radial Trailer Tires for Highway Driving
I highly recommend switching from bias trailer tires to radial trailer tires for highway travel. The reason for that is radial trailer tires are designed for use on normal paved roads and highways because they flex more and run cooler than bias tires. The cords on a radial tire run at a 90 degree angle straight across the tire while the cords on a bias tire run at a 32 degree angle. That leads to the better flexing, traction and ground contact with a radial tire. A bias tire is best for...

  • How To Determine the Correct Size Lug Nuts For a Trailer
The three most common lug stud sizes for a trailer are 1/2"-20, 9/16"-18, and 5/8"-18. In order to make sure you get the correct lug nuts you need to measure the lug studs on the trailer now as we have no way to look this up for individual trailers. I have attached a few options based on the lug stud size below. The 1/2"-20 studs are used on small-medium duty trailers whereas the 9/16"-18 and 5/8"-18 lug studs are used on larger duty trailers. Chrome Trailer Wheel Lug Nut 1/2"-20 Closed...

  • Lug Nut Torque Specs for Karrier ST205/75R15 Radial Trailer Tire with 15" Aluminum Wheel
Hey Shane, thanks for reaching out! The Karrier ST205/75R15 Radial Trailer Tire with 15" Aluminum Wheel # KE63JR that you're asking about doesn't come with lug nuts, but you will need to use 1/2"-20 lug nuts, like the Redline # 12CLN, to install the wheel to your trailer. You will need to torque the lug nuts on this wheel down to 90 - 100 ft-lbs.

For the Dexstar # AM20422 trailer wheel, you'll want to use a 1/2-20 lug nut with a 60º cone like # CE11051. If you'd like to dress things up a little bit, you can use a chrome lug nut like # 12CLN.

Hey Patrick! The Aluminum Viking Series Valhalla Trailer Wheel item # TA65ZR is compatible with lug nuts like the Chrome Trailer Wheel Lug Nut item # 12CLN. This is a 60 degree coned lug nut, that fits a 1/2" stud. It's also referred to as bulge acorn or tapered. What kind of trailer do you have?

  • Does Load Range of 225/75R15 Trailer Tire Affect Durability
That is a good question and it is certainly reasonable to think that might be the case but it actually is not. A ST225/75R15 trailer tire with a load range of D such as the Karrier ST225/75R15 Radial Trailer Tire - Load Range D # AM10256 will last just as long and perform just as well as its equivalent with a load range of E, the Karrier ST225/75R15 Radial Trailer Tire - Load Range E # AM10303. Generally speaking, the higher the load range of tire, the more expensive, so as long as the...

  • Which Lug Nuts To Use on 17.5" Trailer Wheels
You can't use conical/tapered lug nuts like the # 12CLN on wheels with flat bolt seats; instead you'll want to use a lug nut with a flange like the Flange Wheel Nut - 5/8" # 95188. If you can tell me which wheels you've got and the lug bolt size, I can confirm this is the correct part for you.

  • What is the Difference Between Trailer Wheel Lug Nut # 12CLN and # 12CLN-L
The only difference between the 1/2 Inch Lug Nut, # 12CLN and # 12CLN-L is the length of each. Both are bulge style which means they have a 60 degree tapered end. The inside depth of 12CLN is 1-1/4 inches. The inside depth of 12CLN-L is 1-3/4 inches.

  • Trouble Removing Lug Nuts on the Kenda Karrier S-Trail w/ 12" Aluminum Wheel # AM31215
Thank you for the picture! The problem you are running into has more to do with the lug nuts you are using than the tire wrenches like part # PTW1 that you referenced. Since the Kenda Karrier S-Trail # AM31215 is a little more recessed where the lug nuts sit you need to swap out your shorter lug nuts, like part # CE11051, and replace them with taller lug nuts like part # 12CLN. Changing out the lug nuts to taller ones will allow you to easily fit a lug wrench over the lug nuts so you can...

  • Can the CE Smith Trailer Wheel Lug Nut Be Used w/ Steel Wheels?
Yes, they can Cat. The CE Smith Trailer Wheel Lug Nut item # CE11051 will indeed work with steel wheels. This is 60º cone style lug nut which is pretty common. It fits 1/2"-20 wheel studs. I prefer the longer lug nuts like item # 12CLN because they completely cover the lug stud, but as far as holding your wheels on it makes no difference. The main advantage of this style is it protects your lug studs threads. Why do you prefer the short ones like item # CE11051? You can add this information...

  • 15 Inch Wheel Compatible With Baby Moon Hubcaps
The wheel used on the # AM32395 Karrier 205/75-15 wheel doesn't have the retention clips or nubs stamped into it that would hold a hubcap in place (see photo). I have some options for you though. A conventional steel wheel like what's provided with # AM32352 does have the nubs or clips that would allow you to install a baby moon hubcap like # AM90086. This wheel features the same tire used on the # AM32395 that you'd asked about. If you wanted to stick with a wheel like what's provided...

  • Lug Nuts Needed For Sumec SR004B 14" x 5" RV Aluminum Trailer Wheels
Hey Steve, I wasn't able to find any info on wheels using the SR004B part number but it does look like these are conical so the # 12CLN you referenced would work if your wheel studs are 1/2'-20. If they're 9/16"-18 then you'll need the # TA76QR instead. I'd love to add a picture of your boat and trailer to the page after you get your wheels installed if you'd like to email me a few?

  • What Lug Nuts Come with The Dexter 7461121-EB Axle?

If you are looking for replacements that are better than that though, I recommend the Redline Chrome Trailer Wheel Lug Nut - 1/2" (Each) # 12CLN. • 12 Inch Aluminum Wheels for 5.30-12 Tires on a Boat Trailer
We have some 12-inch aluminum wheels that will fit your 5.30-12 tires. We have split spoke wheel with black accents # AM22319HWT. This is my favorite and what I would go with because it is a beautiful wheel. All of these wheels have the 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern and more than enough capacity for the tires you have. The aluminum construction will also resist corrosion well. I have linked videos of all of these wheels for you. You will also likely need longer lug nuts to mount the wheels....

  • Replacement Lug Nuts for Aluma Trailer that Won't Swell
Hey Kevin, I'd be shocked if you didn't need a standard 1/2 inch lug nut like the # 12CLN you mentioned but this is the type that can swell overtime since it's chrome and that is susceptible to corrosion. A stainless steel lug nut like the part # DE55KR would be a better option. Feel free to email me back with a picture of what you have though and I'll double check.

So if you went with the 1/2"-20 you will want the Chrome Trailer Wheel Lug Nut - 1/2" (Each) # 12CLN, for 9/16"-18 the Taskmaster Trailer Wheel Lug Nut - Chrome Plated - 9/16"-18 # TA76QR. • How To Determine The Correct Lug Nuts For Your Trailer's Wheels
There unfortunately isn't a guide to tell us the size needed for your specific trailer, but it's really easy to measure for the correct size lug nuts. You'll want to use a set of calipers # PTW80157 to measure the diameter of the wheel stud, including the threads and then measure the pitch by counting the threads in one inch of space on the stud. The most common sizes are 1/2"-20, 9/16"-18, and 5/8"-18. The 1/2"-20 wheel studs are typically used on small-medium duty trailers whereas the...
