Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

If you Google “best trailer tires” you’ll get 10 different opinions. I decided to go with etrailer because customer service is over the top and I’ve had very positive results with them in the past. Peyton was very knowledgeable and helpful. Time will tell how good my new tires are but the purchase process was smooth. Delivered in 4 days.

by:

From the time I placed my order I was pleased with the way I was kept up to date. It was easy to track the order and it even arrived ahead of schedule. Thanks for that part of the process.

by:

I purchased 2 tires and a tire and a rim for my spare. They look great and the fit was perfect. If I need tires again, I will be ordering them from etrailer.

by:

bash shipping box and tire in excellent condition!

by:

Great trailer tires. Original set of these lasted 10 years. Great price and speedy delivery were a welcome bonus.

by:

I bought a used 2013 Keystone Hideout from a private party. The rv didn't have a spare tire. I researched part numbers for the same Karrier tire and Dexter wheel that are on the camper. Search results had etrailer at the top of the list of responses. Prices for these pieces were competitive with other websites. Free shipping over 99 bucks sealed the deal. Just before making the order I noticed that two axle grease cap covers had cracks in them. I searched the ALKO/Hayes part numbers and etrailer was the only site ( other than the mfg ) to list/cross ref the covers AND they were in stock for a low price. I made the order on Tuesday and they arrived Friday which is real good for free shipping from Missouti to N.E. Pa ! Parts arrived securely packaged and in perfect shape. I am very satisfied with this order.

by:

Looks good and the date code is recent,
Time will tell how good a tire it is. Shipped in avery sturdy cardboard box.

by:

Exactly as ordered with super fast ship ping!!

by:

I bought these Karrier tires to replace the original Karrier tires that had worn out /failed (broken belt, uneven tread wear) on my 24’ RV. They have run over 8000 miles now and are still looking good. It is important to get the wheels balanced when new tires are installed.
It took a few weeks to get these as they were back ordered in 2021.

by:

TIRE CAME FAST AND GREAT QUALITY

by:

These tires have held up the best on the three trailers I’ve had. They last forever quite a few miles. I pull my trailer (6,000 lbs) approximately 25,000 miles a year and these tires will run 3-4 years. And they hold their air.

by:

Everything looks really good so far it arrived really quick very good information on the phone I am very happy with my whole experience

by:

etrailer had everything I needed in stock. I ordered and they were shipped very quickly. Great job etrailer. It is not the first time I have done business with your company. I was equally pleased in the past. Loyal Customer!

by:

It was very easy to order from etrailer. Product arrived quickly. Have since made three trips with the new tires and they ride nicely.

by:

Fast shipping. Tires arrived on time and in perfect condition.

by:

Selection, ease of order, and delivery were top-notch.

by:

I received my tires, Karrier ST205/75R14 Radial Trailer Tire - Load Range C, within a few days if ordering. Very happy with that. They were well packaged, each tire in it's own box. They are mounted and my trailer is ready to go. I gave this 4 stars, because I haven't used them yet. Hopefully they'll be 5 star tires once I start using them.

by:

This is my second purchase from etrailer and could not be happier with their products and shipping. I have purchased Karrier Loas Star ST205/75R14 trailer tires. They have proven to be wearing well and are very smooth. All the other trailer tire brands that I have used would delaminate and not hold up.

etrailer will always get my business!

by:

I've been a customer for several years now, and the service during my recent purchase of 4 trailer tires was the usual excellent. Mariah assisted me in my purchase and was very helpful in getting them out a day sooner to meet my scheduled needs. The tires were individually packaged in boxes so they arrived in great shape. Thanks again etrailer!

  • When Should Trailer Tires be Replaced
Trailer tires should be replaced about every 6 or 7 years, even if the tread is still in good shape because they will deteriorate over time. The UV rays are a big part of this but tires can also crack or even dry rot making them dangerous if not replaced. The risk is for leak development but even more than that is the tire coming apart and/or blowing out. You may also want to check out our tire covers to protect your tires and extend their life. I've attached a link to that page for all...

  • Boat Trailer Tire Recommendation to Replace P185/65R14 Tires
I would recommend you replace the passenger vehicle tires you have on your boat trailer as soon as possible. You want to use ST specialty trailer rated tires as they are designed for increased vertical loads unlike a passenger vehicle rated tire. The closest tire size to what you currently have would be the ST205/74R14 like you referenced with part # AM10234. This tire size will be an additional 3 inches taller than what you currently have and 20 mm wider. You will need to verify that...

  • Can Karrier ST205/75R14 Radial Trailer Tire Be Inflated to 50 PSI
The tag on your trailer listing 50 psi would be for the stock 205/75R14 tires. I'm sure the max psi for those tires was 50. You should always inflate your trailer tires to the max psi as indicated by the tire manufacturer. The Karrier ST205/75R14 Radial Trailer Tire # AM10234 max psi is 60 which gives you a max load of 1,925 lbs. Inflating them to 50 psi would give you an unknown capacity. You can still use these on your trailer, you just need to inflate them to 60 psi instead of 50.

  • Are Larger Wheels Beneficial to Trailer?
Slightly larger wheels will not have a bearing on your trailer in terms of gas consumption or wear and tear. More important is getting the correct tire for your trailer and always keeping it filled to the max psi. This indicates that the tire was manufactured in the ninth week of 2011. You can find this number on one side of the tire after the DOT stamp near the bead of the tire. • What is the Difference Between Radial and Bias Ply Trailer Tires
The main difference between a radial ply and a bias ply tire is how the tire is constructed. The cords inside a bias ply tire run at a 32 degree angle to the direction of travel, and the cords on a radial tire run at a 90 degree angle to the direction of travel, or across the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. A radial tire flexes more than a bias tire, giving it better ground contact, traction, stability, and tread wear. A radial tire will normally run cooler than a bias ply tire, especially...

I don't have a way to provide the exact date code for any one set of tires that we ship but I can tell you that trailer tires are a top product for use and we sell a lot of them. This means that they don't sit on the shelf long in our warehouse once they leave the manufacturer, especially for common sizes like a 205/75-14. Therefore, it's very likely that the Karrier ST205/75R14 Radial Trailer Tire part # AM10234 will be under a year old. I would also like to point out our warehouse is...

  • Do You Carry a White Wall Tire For a Vintage Camper?
Unfortunately we do not carry any white wall tires at this time. Those are typically going to have to be acquired from a vintage tire dealer since they use different tire molds. I have seen people starting to convert standard tires like the Karrier ST205/75R14 # AM10234 by adding either a vinyl to the tire or painting it. There is plenty of information about both ways of doing these on the internet and they often end up being a more cost effective solution as well.

The load range of the ST205/75R14 tires you choose will need to be sufficient for the weight of both your boat and trailer.
