Question:
I have a trailer with dexter 8-248 hubs with a 5x4.75 bolt pattern. Is there a replacement hub I can use to make it a 5x4.5 bolt pattern? It is a 3500 lb axle with tapered spindles.

Expert Reply:
Dexter 8-248 hubs normally have inner bearings like Item # L68149 and outer bearings like Item # L44649. If these are your bearings (the size will be stamped on them) then it sounds like you currently have something like Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly Item # AKHD-5475-35-K which fits your current 5 on 4-3/4 bolt pattern.
If this is correct, you should be able to move to a 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern with Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly Item # AKHD-545-35-K. This hub assembly fits most 3,500-lbs standard axles and is compatible with most most manufacturers. If you make this change then make sure everything including your wheels will fit and work together.
