For the upgrade from a 4-way trailer connection to a 7-way with brake controller, I recommend the # ETBC7 for your 2009 Ford Ranger XLT 4x4. This Universal Brake controller wiring kit will allow you to use the current 4-way an then give you the wiring, circuit breakers, and connectors needed to upgrade your system. Then you just need to install a brake controller.
For a brake controller, I recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 # 90195. This controller uses proportional braking, so it will apply the brakes on your trailer at the same time and with the same amount of pressure as you hit the brake pedal in your Ranger. It has an easy to read and understand LCD screen that takes code deciphering of errors out of the equation. It is simple, straight forward, and extremely reliable. It also has some presets to make connection to the trailer size that much easier.
I've attached a video of this installation to assist.
