Features to know about

Stay Level and Confident Under Load: 1,000-lb Rear Suspension Support

When you’re towing or hauling, rear sag can throw off steering, braking, and headlight aim. These SumoSprings Solo helper springs add up to 1,000 lbs of support at 50-percent compression to keep your ride level and steady. They work along with your factory suspension to even out the weight so your tires stay planted and your handling stays confident when the load gets heavy.

Smooth Ride on Every Trip: Progressive Load Control

Every load is different, and these springs automatically adjust to match it. With lighter loads they compress easily for a softer, less bumpy ride. As the weight increases, they stiffen up—compressing by as much as 80 percent—to help carry the extra load. That progressive action keeps the ride smooth when empty and controlled when fully loaded without any air pressure adjustments or maintenance.

Side-by-side comparison showing SumoSprings Solo Custom Helper Springs installed on a vehicle, with one spring uncompressed and the other compressed under load, illustrating suspension support function.

Stay Steady in Crosswinds and Turns: Independent Spring Action

When a curve, crosswind, or uneven load tries to push you around, each spring works on its own to keep that side of the vehicle steady. This independent action helps reduce body roll and sway, keeping things settled through corners or uneven driveways so you stay in control no matter how the load shifts.

Built Tough for Real-World Conditions: Durable Microcellular Urethane

These helper springs are made from microcellular urethane that stands up to oil, road salt, and UV rays. They handle temperatures from -25°F to 200°F without breaking down or deforming. Because they compress vertically with minimal side bulge, they fit safely in tight spaces and won’t rub against nearby parts. No air lines to run and nothing to maintain—just solid support every time you haul or tow.

Install It Yourself in an Afternoon: Simple No-Drill Mounting

Adding extra suspension support doesn’t have to be complicated. The SumoSprings Solo kit bolts into place with no drilling required. You get two jounce-style springs that mount directly where they belong so you can upgrade your suspension with basic tools and get back on the road ready to haul.

Video Transcript for Detailed Breakdown of the SumoSprings Solo Custom Helper Springs-SS35GR

Hey guys, this is Jake here with etrailer. Today we're gonna be talking about the density differences in the different colors of SumoSprings. More specifically, today we're gonna be talking about the blue line of SumoSprings. So just to compare each one to start with, the blue is going to be for your lighter, more frequent use. The black is going to be a more heavier duty, constant use, and then your yellow is going to be a more extreme duty, if you're constantly towing at the max capacity of the vehicle that you're using. To go over each one a little bit more and what case is best for each one, the blue one, which is why it's most popular, is going to be for frequent towing.

If you're towing like what we've got back here, a couple of buckets of salt or if you're going to the store to pick up a load of lumber or different building materials, whatever you're hauling, if you don't have a constant load on these, these are gonna be a great option. If you're wanting to put a set of SumoSprings on, say a sprinter van that's always loaded down with tools or maybe a rigging truck that's got a welder in the back, and you just want a little bit more support than what the factory suspension can supply, the black ones are gonna be a great option if they're always engaged. The yellow is going to be your most extreme option. So if you're pushing your vehicle to its max weight capacities, the yellow's probably gonna be what you're gonna want to go with because they're gonna supply the most support if you're at that max capacity. Now focusing more in on the blue set, they are going to be made out of a softer compound, which is why they're so ideal for people who are not towing all the time because the suspension on the vehicle is designed to be soft for a comfortable ride.

Well, if you go and throw a super stiff add-on spring on there, then it's gonna completely eliminate the fact that you had a softer suspension before. So when you put these on, they're going to help to absorb the shock rather than resist it like the other ones are. For when you hit bumps, this one's going to absorb it. It'll be a soft-cushion feel, whereas those are stiffer, so they're going to hit the frame, and you're gonna feel it transfer through the vehicle. Now, being made out of a urethane material, it's going to make it quiet but still harsh.

With the blue ones they are, like I said, they're gonna be much softer. If you're not towing all the time, these are gonna be a great option to add to your vehicle because you're gonna get the support when you need it and you won't even know it's there when you don't. Now, when it comes to installation, SumoSpring does a great job of making a custom install for each vehicle that you purchase these for. For example, we installed some on this 2020 Nissan Frontier, and this lower bracket is identical to the bracket that the factory jounce bumper was bolted onto. Except this one is going to be a little bit beefier, which is always a good thing.

You want the hardware to be able to support the add-on that you're putting on there. So depending on your vehicle, you can use our fit guide to find the right SumoSpring to fit your vehicle. Let's go ahead and take this over the test course and see how the suspension performs without our SumoSprings, and then we'll get them installed. Now to start off our test course, we're gonna start with just a couple of little bumps. Oh, you can feel a lot of sag in the back end of this truck because it's already compressed, so when we go over a bump there's not much more room to travel after that. When I'm hitting these bumps, the steering on the front feels very light. The steering wheel is kind of doing whatever it wants, and we're going at low speeds too, so this is not even a, not really a true example of what you might experience on the highway with high winds or anything like that to cause sway or any other problems you might have. But this is giving us a very good example of how soft the suspension is. Even with 450 pounds in the bed, that's, I mean, that's hardly nothing for what the owner of this vehicle typically hauls with it. He hauls a heavier trailer to do some side work here and there, and he's got usually about 400 pounds on the tongue or on the trailer hitch itself. So that's a lot more leverage than just in the bed of the truck directly over the axle. So in our little slalom here, driving back and forth, you can feel a little bit of body roll side to side. So hopefully those SumoSprings are gonna help out with some of that roll and help to get this suspension a little bit more dialed in and provides more support for us. Now with our SumoSprings installed in that same 450 pounds in the bed of our truck, take another measurement, we're at 34 and a half inches, so that's only a half inch of sag compared to the inch and a half we had earlier. Now with suspension enhancement, it's designed to provide some support not get it back to that factory ride. We want to have a little bit of sag because that's how we get the correct amount of weight on our ball mount or the tongue of our trailer. For when we are going over bumps is really when it's gonna count. We're not gonna have that same drop that we had in the first run. So let's go ahead and take it through and see how the support is with our SumoSprings. To start off our test course with our SumoSprings installed, we've got that same double bump. You can tell there's a lot more support in the rear now. Now these SumoSprings are still going to be relatively soft compared to a set of Timbrens or something a little bit stiffer, but you can tell, yeah, on that double bump there, it still has that softness that we want, but it's supporting it, and that's definitely what we're looking for out of this set. Now coming around a turn, we didn't have a whole lot of body roll before, but I can definitely tell it's a little bit more solid back there. I went over some small bumps in the parking lot, and I think it's handling quite a bit better than it was before. Again, we've only got about 450 pounds in the bed, so it's not a crazy heavy load, but it's definitely enough to engage our SumoSprings to really see how they work. Now the only thing is with this kit, you're not gonna have the adjustability like you would with a set of airbags, but for the example of this neighbor of ours that owns this vehicle, he doesn't need the adjustability. He's hauling the same load all the time, and it just so happens to be a decently heavy trailer that makes his truck squat a lot more than he feels comfortable with. So this set of SumoSprings is gonna work out great for him. These are gonna be made out of a microcellular urethane, which is essentially another term for foam that has tiny little air pockets in it that allow it to flex enough but also be stiff enough to provide that support. They are also going to be a progressive spring, so the more and more they compress the stiffer they get to provide that support. There are a couple options for jounce-style replacement springs on our website. I do like these a lot because there's other types out there that are much stiffer. They may be able to hold a lot more than these can, but a lot of trucks, such as the Frontier, they don't need that much support. These being rated for 1400 pounds is more than enough support for this Frontier and what it can handle. And the reason for that is, with those stiffer springs, you almost have to be loaded to half the capacity that they can carry in order for them to give you a comfortable ride. These being that softer urethane material, when you go over a speed bump or anything unloaded, you're not gonna feel a knock up against your frame because those other springs, when they engage, since it's such a hard rubber you'll feel it every time you go over a bump or anything like that. With these, you're not hardly gonna feel it because they are that softer material. These jounce-style bumpers are gonna be for the rear of your vehicle, but if you're looking for a front-end suspension enhancement, SumoSprings does make a variety of different products for different vehicles, so be sure to check out our fit guide to see what kits are available for your vehicle if you're having an issue with your front end. Hopefully this video was able to help you decide whether or not the Blue SumoSpring line is the right one for you.

These were perfect for my truck and camper setup. I drive a 2004 Ford Ranger regular cab with a 6ft bed. I have a 500lb tongue weight limit for my trailer hitch and I am pushing about 450lb on it (camper tongue weight ~50 lbs, plus motorcycle mounted on tongue ~400 lbs), which is a bit much for the rear leaf springs by themselves when I add weight to the bed of the truck. The sumo springs add just enough cushion to keep my ride smooth and help with the added weight.

2010 Ford Ranger
shipping was slightly delayed, but etrailer kept me well informed and even offered a replacement option if I didn't want to wait. Product arrived well packaged, installation was quite easy except for one issue, I have a 2010 Ford Ranger and included is a 1/2" spacer to accommodate for the flange on the frame, it is too small it needs to be 5/8" because when I bolted it on it was cocked to one side due to the flange being bigger than the spacer, I fabricated a large metal 1/8" washer and it fit perfectly( my concern with this is the washer may shift, time will tell, I will keep an eye on it). I have since loaded up the truck with just over 1,000 lbs which is pushing a Ranger to its limits and the added springs have performed well, load rides level where it used to sag and handling is greatly improved, would have gone to 5 stars if washer was correct, I do recommend this product it performs as intended.

2000 Ford Ranger
Gotta little 2000 ranger 4x4 that pulls my home made 5x10 off road camper. Was squating and bouncing pretty bad with the 25 year old factory springs.Got these and put them on in about 30 minutes without even jacking it up. Dropped the spare tire for a little more room under there. Was the most worried about the 25 year old rusty bolts holding my bump stops on. I sprayed PB blaster on them a couple of days and no problem, if you don't count the ratchet slipping off and causing me to rip a chunk of meat out of my 71 year old arm. Don't worry, all my projects have some of my DNA on them.Everything went great after that, easy peasy. Before you tighten everything up, make sure the bumper mounting bolt is lined up with the vehicle bump pad or the new bumper won't hit the center. Just finished the install haven't pulled my trailer around yet. I'll do that after the first aid on my arm.LOL.

This only pertains to the order, shipping speed, and install as I have not put a heavy load on these sumo Springs yet but I feel like that's a foregone conclusion based off the reviews already. The ordering process, the shipping, and the installation was unbelievably easy. I kept rereading the instructions thinking this can't be right because it was so simple. I looked at the YouTube video and realized it is that simple! So happy with the ordering process, the quality of the initial product I opened, and how simple it was to put on the jeep.

That is the beauty of SumoSprings! Super easy to install and once they're on you can forget they're there! Are you planning on towing something with your Jeep that you want extra support for?

@ClaireH yes Ms Claire. I plan to put a truck camper on the Jeep (that weighs in the 500-1000 lbs range). My payload is 1700 lbs so I know a camper of the weight will be significant my truck. Already ordered a stiffer rear anti-sway bar as well.

@Justin That sounds like a good plan! These SumoSprings plus the sway bar should be more than enough to handle the weight of your truck bed camper.

2013 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited
I put these on a 2013 Jeep JK (not lifted) that tows a 3000 lb trailer in rough terrain; Total game changer.

These replaced the anemic factory stops (which had completely disintegrated) and make it impossible to 'bottom out' on the dips and holes that use to beat up the suspension. I got nearly all of my vertical travel back and the vehicle now sits almost level under high tongue load.

They go on pretty easy. I suggest sliding in one side, and then using a wooden dowel and hammer to pop the other side in the stock receiver cup.

Highly recommended. These are a MUST if you are towing a trailer (with a medium sized SUV) of any significant weight or if you just want to be able to bounce hard without bottoming out your suspension. I am likely going to get the front suspension version now as well.
Wish I knew these existed sooner.

2025 Promaster 2500 159” wheelbase. Backed the van on couple 2” X 6 “ easier sliding under. Sprayed PB Blaster on top of bumper spring, using a 16” Channel Lock, easy off with the old. At that time I jacked the rear end to allow clearance. One side at a time. Took longer for set up then the job. I used the long bolt with two spacers. Have not drove yet, though looking for great results.

2000 Nissan Leaf
Great product! Bought these for my 2000 7.3 f250. Didn't want something that is constantly active like ras or hellwig since my leaf springs are new and rated for 4k pounds. Installed these in 1 hr super simple only hard part was the factory bump stop on driver side was a pain. Didn't install the puck they give due to height of truck and I knew more or less at what point I wanted them engaging. I haul cattle to shows/ auctions or between pastures with my 24ft big bend and these things actually provided a smoother ride in my truck loaded then unloaded.they do a great job with the added support and are better than an overload spring with handling sway and providing a smooth ride loaded. Just wish I could use the 3k pound rated ones on this truck and my dually but doesn't fit if you have a gooseneck sadly so will probably have to go with timbs on the drw. Over all great product can't speak to longevity but solid for the time being. And customer service with this company is excellent if you have a question or problem they're on top of it...hope they pay them as well as the reputation they're building for them.

I put a set of 47s on my Silverado 1500 and towed my dump trailer that weighed 6000 pounds the way I had it loaded for 50 miles on all kinds of roads and it worked well. I didn’t use the spacers and the truck still rides like it did before the install.

Jeep Gladiator Mojave - swapped out the rear stock bump stops with these. High quality parts. Just jack up the truck enough to give you room to work with and put in your jack stands, no need to remove the wheels. I look forward to seeing how they do with towing! Hopefully I can update my review here afterwards. Check out the gap difference in the pictures. Should touch sooner during normal drive conditions and hopefully help reduce some trailer squat and help towing to be smoother.

Opted for the Blue 1000lb Sumo's w/spacer over the 1500lb Black ones. 1500 Silverado Max Tow & reduces squatting by 2" on a 1000lb+ tongue weight. Ride is still good, but you can feel the Sumo's engage over large dips or bumps which is not an issue for me.

I got the springs installed last week and wanted to have a drive time before I wrote the review.

The height of the springs are perfect for my 2016 Tacoma, They keep the truck stable and nearly eliminate the body roll I had before installing them. I am heading to the mountains in a couple weeks, so I will update the review when I get back. That way I will know for sure the body roll is gone and the truck is stable on the winding mountain roads.

The springs installed in no time at all and since I had the rear end apart, I decided to add the leveling blocks at the same time, to keep the truck from squatting with the gear I haul around with me.

The guys at etrailer are great. And while I did not call them to discuss this item, they have been very helpful in the past with all my questions.

Below are pictures of before, a couple comparisons and after. Sorry if they come out sideways.

These Sumo Springs were a great addition to my Tacoma and well worth the money, IMHO.

The springs are working exactly as expect. I have need up to the mountains numerous times and to Monerary to the Sea Otter bike fest. They have reduced the body roll and helped keep the truck stable on the mountain roads or when loaded down for camping. Im very pleased I added these Sumo Springs to my Tacoma.

2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500
Have Nissan NV 1500 (transit van).Loads and trailers were the problem-along with the constant "slouch" look-with no really heavy load on it. Hated that!
These used with "add-on leaf springs" made a world of difference.
Bumps being felt, are there, but nothing like before. These two things along with new shocks (all for back),has helped out so much!
So, the bumps have almost faded to "nothingness". Now granted, I have not hit a massive pothole, yet. I try to dodge those anyhow!
Components work great together!

Got them installed no issues the reason for 4 stars is one side touches top of axle the other side does not no one could tell me if this was right or wrong also haven't pulled 5th wheel yet to feel the ride or handling so we will see thanks

Definitely helps with squat on '24 F250 from boat trailer tongue weight. These do come with a plate to avoid uneven contact or wear.
I mounted using all spacers , stock is same unless speed bumps or large dips, u feel the stiffness/contact of sumo as expected. May take one spacer out .
Super easy to install , better than leaking bags.
Time will tell how they last

I had installed this model SumoSpring on my 2019 4Runner and had great results when towing the camper I had at the time. They greatly reduce the bounce when going over dips in the road at highway speeds. Now I have a 2021 Titan and a bigger heavier camper. I expect the same great results on the Titan. Installation was pretty straight forward and took about a half hour. The size difference between the OEM bump stops and the SumoSprings alone should give a better ride when towing my camper.

I definitely recommend going with the bump stop jounce-style springs that you are referring to as these require no maintenance and are very easy to install. They drastically reduce rear sag and also help with the overall handling of your truck. Your two options for your 2010 Ford Ranger are the SumoSprings Solo Custom Helper Springs - Rear Axle # SSR-113-40 and the Timbren Rear Suspension Enhancement System # TFRR050A.
