Video Transcript for In-Depth Review of the Curt 7-Way to RV Socket LED Circuit Tester

Hi there. I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Today we're gonna take a quick look at this Curt 7-Way to RV Socket LED Circuit Tester. Now this 7-way connector tester is going to plug into your vehicle's wiring harness to confirm your lights are functioning properly. You can see we do have a color-coded and labeled set of LEDs here that are going to make it very easy to distinguish your vehicle's signals. So, if we work from the bottom here, you can see we've got our TM for our tail lights.

We've got our LT for our left turn signal and our RT for our right turn signal. Those will both light up for our brakes, so we can check our brakes. We've got the BU for our backup, BK for our electric brakes, and then our 12V for our auxiliary power. So this will be very easy to operate. Just plug it right in, apply your turn signals, brakes, electric brakes, that sort of thing.

It will light up to indicate that it's functioning properly. We can loosen this screw on the backside that will allow us to twist that LED head so that we can get that lined up in whatever orientation is gonna be easiest for us to view as we are testing those out. So we'll just take a little bit of backing out of that screw there, and then we can twist the head to whichever orientation is gonna be easiest for us to see, and then tighten it back down so it always be able to make sure that we have a very easy time just to plug this in and then operate those signals, make sure that they're working properly. So that completes our look for today. Again, I'm Michael with etrailer.com.

Thanks for watching.

  • 7-Way Tester Recommendation for 2016 Chevy Silverado 1500
The 7-way tester part # C73NR would work on your 2016 Chevy Silverado 1500 for all circuits unless you have an integrated brake controller. That's pretty much the only circuit we have found that doesn't like to work with this tester on the newer Chevy trucks.

  • Trailer Lights Stay on Once Vehicle Ignition is Shut Off
I suspect your problem is caused by a damaged or corroded trailer connector. Take a look at your trailer connectors, both the socket on your truck as well as the plug on the trailer. Look for green or white corrosion on the pins or sockets of the connectors. If corrosion is visible, there is a strong possibility that the corrosion has spread to the interior of the connector. The terminals that each individual circuit connects to are very close together, if corrosion builds up on the terminals,...

  • Troubleshooting Lack of 12V Power at 7-Way Trailer Connector on 2019 Ford F-150
Since you are not getting the 12V power when your truck is running, you most likely don't have a fuse issue as you stated their isn't a specified fuse or relay in the owners manual. The issue is that your truck is computerized even at the 7-way. It can sense when a trailer is connected based on the voltage draw so it won't sent a signal for 12V when using some testers, especially LED testers because there isn't enough of a power draw. The system requires a power draw on the 7-way and...

  • Troubleshooting P3 Brake Controller Not Working with Travel Trailer Brakes
Hey David, did you check the pins of the 7-way for any dirt or corrosion. That's typically what is to blame for these types of issues and just sanding the pins clean takes care of the problem. The p3 part # 90195 has a pretty good diagnostic feature on it as well though. What does the display say when connected to the tester # C73NR as well as to a trailer?

  • Could Center Pin of Trailer Wiring 7-Way be 12 Volt Accessory Circuit
You basically already did verify that the center post of your 7-way is the 12 volt accessory circuit. Normally the center post is the reverse light circuit and the 12 volt pin is the 1:00 pin position. If your center pin is hot all the time then it would be the 12 volt accy circuit.

  • How To Activate 12V Trailer Charge Circuit On 2019 Ford Super Duty With Factory 7-Way
If you have already added the fuse and the trailer charge circuit is not activated in the 2019 Ford F-350 Super Duty with factory integrated brake controller, then you want to make sure the trailer is connected and you press the brake according to a Ford Service Bulletin on their factory integrated brake control with trailer module 12V charging system. There may also be a dash setting to activate the tow/haul mode on the 7-way before the 12V output is activated.

  • What is AX Auxiliary Pin on Hopkins 7-Way Trailer Connector
The AX (Auxiliary) location on the Hopkins 48505 connector that you reference, which is the same one used on the Hopkins # H20046, is typically used for 12V power. If you take a circuit tester like part # PTW2979 or # C73NR you should see that the corresponding pin on your 2012 GMC Sierra 7-Way (in the 1 o'clock position) has constant 12V of power running to it. What you would connect this to on your trailer are things like your batteries, a trailer jack, or anything that would need to...

  • Troubleshooting Trailer Brake Module Fault on 2008 Ford F-250 w/ a Factory Controller
Are you talking about the factory brake controller? If so it sounds like you may have a short in the wiring on your 2008 Ford F-250. You can use a Multimeter like item # PT29ZR to check this at your 7-way by checking for continuity with the brake wire and any other wire on the 7-way. You can see the terminals in the image below. If this is a factory controller, I recommend checking with your local dealer as well to see if there are any required re-flashes needed for it. Have you checked...

  • Troubleshooting Brake Controller in Vehicle that Stops Working Intermittently
You did an excellent job troubleshooting your brake controller issue so far. It sounds like there's a bit of corrosion on the pins of your 7-way which is preventing the controller from making a solid and consistent connection. Try taking some sandpaper to the pins of your 7-way (specifically the brake output 5:00) position and most likely will get you going. If you find that your 7-way is corroded or damaged to the point of needing a replacement an easy solution is the part # HM40975 which...

  • How Can I Be Sure My Curt Triflex Brake Controller Is Working Worrectly
Hello Dan, I can definitely help with this. It is completely normal for the Curt TriFlex brake Controller # C24VV to show the current gain setting when the brakes are applied, or when the manual override is pressed. It sounds like you have the gain currently set at 9.7 which is why you are seeing this number flash on the display. So, it sounds like it is working correctly and there is no problem with the controller. I suggest trying to turn the gain down. This way you can be 100% sure...

  • How to Use the Tekonsha Prodigy Brake Controller on a 2018 Volkswagen Atlas SEL
Yes, the Tekonsha Prodigy RF Wireless Trailer Brake Controller part # TK94FR will work on your 2018 Volkswagen Atlas SEL as long as you have a 7-way trailer connector. If you do not already have a 7-way trailer connector then you are going to first need a 4-way trailer connector and then a 4 to 7-way trailer connector. For this, I recommend using the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness part # 118754 with the Universal Installation Kit for Trailer Brake Controller part # ETBC7. Please note that...

All brake controllers on your 2016 Jeep Renegade, including one such as the Hayes # HA81742B, will need to be hardwired in as there is no compatible harness. Due to the difficulty in locating the stoplight wire it is recommended to get your brake controller professionally installed. The brake controller I strongly recommend is the Prodigy P3 # 90195; it is the most popular model we carry due to its effectiveness and ease of use. • No Power to the 12 Volt Pin on a 7-way Trailer Plug on a 2001 Ford F-250 7.3L Powerstroke
I looked up your owner's manual online and the 12V power issue is likely a fuse issue. You will want to check the 30amp fuse number 16. This will be in the power distribution box under the hood.

  • Recommended Brake Controller for a 2019 Ford F-350
Hey Chad! Trailer's weighing over 3,000 lbs require brakes by law in most states but some require them on 2,000 lbs trailers. These laws apply when you're driving through the state, not where the trailer's registered, so it's just easier if you go with any trailer over 2,000 lbs requires brakes. To add a brake controller to your 2019 Ford F-350, I recommend the Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty Brake Controller w/ Custom Harness - Dash Knob item # RED67CR. This is a proportional brake controller...

  • How To Test Factory Brake Controller Function on 2019 Ford F-150
The only true way to test the brake controller in your 2019 Ford F150 is by connecting it to a trailer with brakes. You could use the brake controller's manual override with the tester plugged in to make sure that the signal was being transmitted to the pin on the 7 way, but you're really going to want to test everything out with a trailer installed to be 100% sure it's functioning correctly and providing the correct braking when you adjust the gain and such.

  • Flashing Trailer Lights with a 2008 Mercedes GL450 with Factory Tow Package
It sounds as if you have the trailer ruled out as the problem. I would recommend you check the ground connection on the trailer, to make sure it is connected securely to clean metal, so you eliminate that as a potential problem. I would then look at the connector on the vehicle. Try using a tester, part # C73NR to check if all circuits are functioning. If you find a problem at the connector, since the tow package is factory, not aftermarket, I would recommend you check with your Mercedes dealer.

  • Differences Between Curt 7-Way LED Circuit Testers
Hi Fred, There isn't any difference between the actual testers of those, they are just different skus for packaging purposes from Curt. I know in my 2024 Chevy Silverado I have to have the headlights on in order for the running lights on my Ranger boat trailer to turn on. Or in other times a relay has to be installed.
