I have attached a link to an installation video that shows the Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness, part # C56172 being installed on a 2015 Explorer. Since the 2015 and 2016 are within the same generation, the installation would be the same. The T-connector on the wiring harness has a plug and a socket. When the harness on the vehicle is separated there will be a socket and a plug. Connect the plug from the vehicle into the socket on the T-connector and then connect the plug on the T-connector into the socket on the vehicle.
I have also attached a couple photos that indicate where the harness is located you can check out.
When working with electrical connectors I recommend using dielectric grease like part # 11755. This keeps dirt and moisture out of the electrical connections and helps prevent corrosion.
